That glass with ribbon cable is an ultrasonic dust shaker. When you select sensor cleaning in menu, you can hear its high-pitched scream.

One screw left over, that's great! When we used to rebuild VW engines, we had a few nuts and bolts left over but the engine ran fine :)

Some 7 years ago I converted my Sony A100 to IR by myself. It took about 6h and the A100 survived. Great job. Have fun! 👏👏👏

" It's Alive! " 😊 Full kudos to you on accomplishing this conversion, I for one wouldn't attempt it. You cursing at them ribbon cables had me in stitches and I was genuinely on the edge of my seat throughout this. Looking forward to seeing the results. Well done 👍

I did the same to my Nex 5R and it also had the connection to the UV/IR cut glass filter in front of the sensor. I watched it under a microscope and I'm pretty sure the thing is a piezoelectric crystal which is used to shake dust off the sensor when you turn the camera on or off. It's pretty much the same kind of thing you'd find in playing postcards.

It's actually insane how much they fit in those little boxes.

TIP: Buy a bunch of reasonable sized (depending on your use) Neodymium magnets and just slap one or two on the rear most section of the driver shaft, near the handle. It'll give it stronger magnetizatation and you can stick your screws there for easy access.

Very interesting to see the process! As im writing this as my new a7riii is at Kolari beening converted to a FS- i went with the nonsmudge glass- total cost was 575.00 for the surgery. Then another $$$$ on rear magnetic ir rear filters. All i have to do now is sell some prints to recover my investment… that wont take long- after using circular ir filters previously im hoping the rear mag filters will be game changer- especially for a couple voigtlanders i own that have no front threads- will no slit more about it in a few weeks…. Ps Kolari now has some kool ir tshirts

I converted a cheap secondhand Nex 6, and I have to say those ribbon cables are even more fun when putting it back together.

cool video. Im looking forward to seeing some shots with this. Could you put something really quick together ? Maybe some low light shots and video. Even if the video is messed up we would like to see what it looks like. Thanks!

Check Astronomik for clip-on filters if you want to switch between IR and Visible whenever you want. I did this for my Sony A7 and it was awesome!
