2021 BMW R 1250 RT - Lighter Than A GSA

- The 1250RT has come a long way and is now walking a thin line between sport-touring and touring. And with the side cases off, it is actually lighter than a GSA.

Three times over the decades I went to the dealer to buy an RT…and three times I left with a GSA. This video makes me want to try a forth time!
what for you need 4th GSA...
Bet you don’t go off road!🥴
And I was going to buy an RS 😀
Funny ! 👍
if you are taller than 1,78, go for gsa
Great choice… I have just done the same and traded my GS in against a 2021 RT. Absolutely loving it and definitely no regrets after the first 1000+ miles… Enjoy the new bike. 👍
Don't you just love the electronic windshield 😀
how would you compare rider position between the gs and rt? Are you more upright on the gs?
thank you
@@jbin2756 The RT is ever so slightly more “sporty” than the GS. I had to fit bar risers to the RT to alleviate a little strain between my shoulders that became apparent on full day rides. Legs are also a little more tucked, but still very comfortable (and I’m fairly tall at 6ft 2in with 34in inside leg).
Strange thing how missing your favorite motovlogger fot 5 month’s can feel like missing a friend. I knew you were alive because I asked you, but I’m glad you’re back! Aren’t there lots of new bikes on the market this year? Yes, there are, but a better question is; can the dealers get hold of them? CU Scott! Enjoy your brandnew beamer!
Good to see you back Scott, I've missed your Saturday evening reviews. Congratulations on the new bike and many miles of enjoyment riding it.
RT remains the finest all round motorcycle money can buy. There is nothing on the market that dances in the twisties and can lay down the miles it does. The fact that is comes with luggage and the best wind protection outside of a goldwing makes it the obvious choice. I’ve even taken mine off roads and with a set of knobbies I’m certain it could do what’s necessary. I will always have an RT in my garage
Hey Scott, welcome back! It's been a while. Loving the RT. I still have unfinished business with my 1250RS, which I love. The slightly canted forward riding position still suits me and I find the saddle all-day comfortable - have never experienced such a good standard seat on a motorcycle. My friend has a 2021 RT in the same blue - by far the best colour on offer from a typically poor selection from BMW IMO. Two things surprised me when riding with him: how good the bike looks without the boxes on, and how that thing can hustle in the twisties when called upon. I already know how good the 1250 motor is. I owned my last IL4 bike in 2010 - can't see me going back. Low down and mid-range shove is where it's at for me. I have short legs and a normal length back (yup, the build of a weasel 😂) so, when the time comes, an RT would be the way to go for me. My wife will appreciate the extra pillion comfort, no doubt, though she finds the RS good already. Looking forward to your ownership feedback on the RT once you've covered some miles. Oh, as mentioned by others: back-lit switchgear BMW - come on guys, no excuse for it from a premium brand with premium prices.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an RT without the cases on, it almost looks like an entirely different bike haha. Congrats on the exciting purchase!!
And it’s noticeable lighter and really flickable without the panniers
Agreed - looks great without the panniers! I'm test riding one on Friday...
Good to see you back.👍
Good to see u back. 👍
Great to see you back!
I still ride my 1986 BMW R80RT (800cc), the much older brother of your new RT, which also came with BMW hard luggage, and I love my bike! You forgot to mention one thing. Properly cared for, RTs last forever! Great review and love the blue color.😎👍
Congratulations on the new ride! I deliberated a lot over the RT vs. GSA question. In the end I got a GSA but it was a tough choice. I do love the RT, just love the GSA a bit more!
Nice to see you back on the circuit, Scott. Looking forward to your review of your bike.
Great to see you back Scott ! Looking forward to a season of great reviews . 🤙🏻
nice to have you back Scott.
Happy to see you back!
Good to see you back! I was wondering. Thanks for the video.
Great to see you back Scott... Missed your videos, hope to see more. Stay safe and ride safe..
Good to see you back!
Great to see you again Scott and thank you for the update! You absolutely made the right choice in the R1250RT it is a beautiful bike and a real mile eater in comfort. I think GT style bikes are going to make a comeback as people consolidate their needs and get a bike that is powerful, practical and able to take you in car-like comfort.
Looking forward to your ride review!
Welcome back. I really enjoy your videos and how thorough you are.
It's good to see you again, really enjoy your style.
I think this bike would suit about 90% of GS riders better than the GS! But I think the lifestyle and "street cred" of the GS is what draws them towards it. I can't pretend not to be affected too!
Perhaps the RT is for the adult on the road; the one less inclined to kowtow to "street cred" pressure(?).
To be honest, why I chose the RT over the GS or GSA is because I looked at what I have done off-road for my whole life and the answer was 0% with my bikes. That's why I chose the RT, along with 10.25" TFT, more wind protection and comes with hard cases. I have been to two off-road parks in the last 3 years but then I just rent their bikes, then I'm not worried about crashing, when I go down I don't have to pay to fix my own bike and therefore I'm more relaxed and can actually learn how to ride off-road without any inhibition's. AND yes both times I went to the off-road parks, I went down more than once, well, the second time I went down once.
take care,
Scott
I know several long in the tooth riders who own and love their GSs. They don’t take them off road, never intended too and not why they bought them. The basic GS (not GSA) is a just a bike with a confident everyday, all day, cruise or carve riding position. I think it has a lot to do with the rider’s leg length too.
I got over my naked self years ago and love my '18 model RT.
How tall are you? Im 6.1 with 34 inseam. Can I create more leg room on a Rt?
Good to see you back and congrats on your new bike. All the best.
Glad to see you back ✌️
Welcome back, glad to see all is well. Love the new bike.
Oh man. So good to see you post again! Look forward to seeing your exploits on the mighty RT. I’ve lusted after that bike since I was a little kid. I’ve always gone a different direction, but some day, just maybe. You are so going to enjoy that bike. Lastly, I often repeat the line, nothing to prove, when I head out to ride. So, thank you for that, and all your fine CZcams work.
Congratulations on your new machine! Great bike and also great for the channel because there are not many people reviewing this bike. Curious for more videos with the RT!
Cheers
Good to see you back and congrats for your new bike !
Good to see you again.
Not into highway bikes but understand why you bought it. If you have to commute or travel long distances on a highway and you prefer to do it on a bike it make total sense. Congratulations.
Always enjoy your sensible and mature point of view in motorcycle videos. Congrats on that beautiful RT!
I knew it ! Congratulations Scott. Nice to see you back ;)
Nice to have you back! Really good choice for a tourer 👍✌
Glad to see you posting again !! GREAT video .... You brought up all "positive" notes on the 1250 RT .... Here in the U.S. MANY Police depts will ONLY use the 1250RTP for it's motor patrol bike .... Performance, handling in urban settings, dependability, and longevity !!!!
On a separate note, ... I like the way you explain the differences between motor bikes .... ANYONE can follow easily, and understand every word, ... "Thank You" sir !!!
I wondered if you were really happy with the 900. Great choice and great to see you back!
Glad you're back :)
Welcome back Scott!
nice to see that you're alive. . . and happy to see you on a wonderful RT!!. Good choice!!. Waiting for your next vídeos!!
Congrat's on the new bike, suits you Sir!
Glad to see you're back making content!
Haha. Now the Boxer fever got you. Congrats for this purchase.
I like your videos and missed them for some months.
Enjoy your ride and greetings from Münsterland
So glad your back, and very glad everything is good was a bit worried now we know!!! God Bless!!
Hey Scott, you are back! Glad to still see you on a (Big) Beamer, didn’t expect that after your dispute on the TFT-screen! It’s a beauty, congrats with the new bike!
Glad you are back and CONGRATS! on the bike - looks killer in blue!
Welcome back...you have been missed Scott
good to see you again, congrats!
Welcome back. Just the other day was wondering what had become of you. You are back with a bang, The Comparison King. Enjoy your new RT. Be sure to do a first impressions video review.
Great comparison 👍 I rode a GS in 2020 and switched to the blue sports RT Last year. I love it. A few weeks ago I received my Corbin saddle ! What a great upgrade. It feels so much better than the stock seat.
I did the same. We shouldn't need to change the seat on a bike that costs this much, though.
Great video as always! I currently (starting from this season) have both the RT 1250 and the GS 1250 (non-adventure). My wife just started riding with me (as I spend more and more days on the road every year) and I find RT to be much better suited for the 2-UP riding. On the GS I always feel the passenger (more suspension dive, braking is different) whilst on the RT I have to check from time to time if my wife is still on the bike (not kidding). Also, a big point for me when comparing the two bikes is that RT has a smaller diameter front wheel which makes the counter-steering easier, it feels more sporty.
Great to see a new video from you Scott, love your new purchase. The RT is a beautiful bike and lets face it as we get a little more grey we want a little more comfort (I own a 2021 Yamaha FJR).
Good to see you back online, bgood luck with the new hike, it looks like a cool machine.
G'day Scotty, great to have you back mate. Great bike that's for sure. Very similiar to my fjr1300. perfect bike for your road's/autobahn's. Congrat's and really looking forward to your upcoming videos. Stay safe brother.
Great to see you posting videos again Scott , nice comfy bike , i can see some long tours coming up , Enjoy.
Congrats!!
I own the same bike Scott, I owned 6 GSs one of them was a GSA and I am not coming back, I am loving my RT1250, way to go my friend!!
(I bought myRT after I watched your review)
Hey Scott! Great to see you moving on the RT. I am for now on a R1200R and loving it! It won hands down vs/ XR900 after a back to back test ride. I have always been in love with the RT but I am somewhat scared when I see it in the flesh 😀
Hi Scott… well, you were instrumental in my buying an R 1250 R last year; that engine is an absolute beast of a torque monster - it does put a smile on your face, as you said in your R 1250 R video. I have not regretted that purchase! Congratulations on your upgrade to the classic BMW motorcycle with that fantastic, horisontally opposed boxer engine… I doubt you will regret it!!
😎
Welcome back, I missed you! Love this video by the way ;-)
Good to see you Scott, beautiful color on the RT. Happy trails, Cheers.
Hey Scott nice to see you back!
Nice video. Good to see you back.
Welcome back Scott. Nice machine there and a big congrats on the RT.
Welcome back NTP, I am already looking forward to the videos to come. And congratulations on your new purchase, a beautiful bike. And if I may be honest, the RT is a winner. Greetings Erwin " sorry I forgot something, that blue is a beautiful color".
Didn't think you wanted a large tourer. But pleased to see you have converted to an RT and joined the RT club. love mine
Great to have you back👍, I'll be waiting for a owners review on that beauty 😁
Yea 😁😊 of course those are coming as the miles are put on and I notice things/nitpicks/etc.
take care,
Scott
Good to see you are still around! No need to justify your choice. Congrats to a new bike. The barn door is a bit much for my taste but hey, we’re all looking for something else in our bikes. Don’t drop it when you go on gravel.
Good to see you Scott , love the new bike …
Ride like there is nothing to prove …
Just perfect slogan!!
I own a 2017 RT and love it. Very excited to see a motorcycle content creator talk about the RT.
Hi Scott, welcome back, great to see some videos from you again! At first glance I was a little surprised to see you on the heavy 280kg RT as in the past you said that you prefer the lighter bikes. I bought a fully equiped F900XR end of last year and really love it. yes, fuel tank could be a bit larger and rear break is a little squishy but there is to my opinion currently no other bike in the market (same prize/size) that can compete with that amount of features/specs that the XR has. Of course the RT (as generally most if not all from bikes BMW) is a great machine, hope to see some touring videos from you with it in the future!
lovely color! I am still keeping my XR....and the GS... and now you made this video...arrrghhh..awesome pick! Will look forward to more content :)
WELCOME BACK!!!
Good to see you're still around. See ya. :-)
I completely understand the lack of new bikes to test. But now you can give us the “full review” on your new RT 😉👍!
Love the RT look forward to your long term review.
Beautiful colour, great choice of bike. Would like to see another road trip with this bike just as you did with the old bike. Great video Scott as as always. Two thumbs up way up high.
We, Uli the GS guy and Karl the SAS guy, are planning a trip down to the French/Spanish Pyrenees Mountains for this June. Let's see what happens 😁👍 We are just talking now, no plans as of yet.
take care,
Scott
Finally one of my very favourite YT channel is back! Thankfully! I totally understand the reasons for the absence. I would like to see your review on an Honda Africa Twin MY22 if you had the chance. Cheers
Congrats mate!!! Beautiful machine. Enjoy it.
That’s my next bike for sure! Good luck with it Scott!
Good to hear and see my favorite BMW (Especially RT) reviewer again. Welcome back, Scott. My Sport Blue RT is on it’s way to me now. Please give us more reviews of your new bike now that you own it. I have watched your first RT review many times. Ride safe.
Thank you! Yea, I'll have to do a "nitpick" video of things I find, one that jumps right out at me is how many times the Navi app looses the map navigation while riding. So far it's done it to me several times. So I can see me doing some research on the subject...etc. But riding season is upon us and tomorrow I have the new Husky Norden 901 to review, so it's as usual, feast or famine. :(
take care,
Scott
@@NothingToProve Hello Scott. Not to be selfish, but I am only interested in your reviews of the RT. (And then to a lesser extent, other BMW motorcycles.) When you have the issue of loosing the map navigation from the TFT, what do you do to bring the display back up? Does this happen while you are riding ? Do you need to park the bike to get the map to redisplay? How do you resolve this issue?
Hey Scott. Bought my F900xr after seeing your reviews and I must say it’s great bike. Looking forward to seeing your reviews on this ‘grown-ups’ bike.
Wondered where you went happy to see you!
Great bike Scott 👍you are completely right no one I know take there gs off road . Looking forward to more videos from you👍
Thanks NTP. Great job. Good info. God bless. Happy trails.
LIKED & SUBSCRIBED
Excellent choice! I went from a 2014 GSA that I always felt was a little breezy and short geared to a K 1600 B that felt a little too top heavy. Now I have the 2021 RT and I think it’s the best choice for the type of riding that I have been doing. So far, I have been on two 5000 mile trips in the South West U.S. and it’s preformed great. In my opinion, it has the best wind protection of any bike that I have ridden. The gearing is taller than the GSA and makes for a much more relaxed ride. P.S. make sure the Active Cruise sensor is always clean or it will go into a fault code.
Fantastic review, beautiful bike, thank you. 👍♥️
good to see you back ! bw from Pakistan
Congrats on the new RT, love it! 😎👍🏼👍🏼
Love your calm and competent approach to moto content. [The new bike] seems to be a great choice! Especially because of long autobahn commutes!
great choice in bike.....not sure if it gets any better than that. Glad your back....cheers from Canada!
Welcome back
If I wasn’t so tall at 6’3, I’d seriously consider an RT. I love old school sport tourers like the RT. I do a decent amount of dirt and gravel on my CRF300 Rally, and have a V4S Multi for touring, but am trading it for the 2022 Africa Twin. Love that Honda engine and it’s so capable on and off road, for a tall guy
I'd love to see u do a comparison between the k1600gt and RT testing both back to back, keep up the great work 👍
The RT is a far superior bike to your previous XR.You will be able to keep this RT for life.Enjoy your new machine.Cheers.
Beautiful bike man. Such a commanding motorcycle it is. You truely made a step up.
The RT is one of my dreambikes. Doing everything with the Tracer7 now. Also light and fun. But eventually will also buy something like yours.
Good luck with the new bike! Find some more dealers to loan you machines. I'm having a credibility moment with vloggers in the UK: it's a trust and impartiality thing. They seem to be too close to the companys they rely on and I smell the rat of self-interest in their content. I've always appreciated and trusted your vids and opinions, especially the comparisons. Welcome back.
Have you tried usernamekate? She's pretty good and funny.
Fantastic bike! I own one to same spec can’t fault it ride safe man
Very impressive, great looking bike. Many good rides with it. I did buy a new GS last year, finally departing from my beloved Roadster series( r850r. R1200R, R1250R). I do agree with you that the off-road aspect of owning a GS ( here in Berlin) is more illusion than reality. I only road off-road by an Enduro Training course. What did impress me was , how nimble the gs is to ride, actually more fun than my smaller roadster. Perhaps, i should have considered the RT, that being said, i wonder how many of us choose a bike because of weight or a somewhat cheaper price , after all, these are top of the line bikes and the people who buy them do so with all the extras. Good to see you back in the saddle. Greetings from Berlin,Jim
Congratulations Scott, awesome motorcycle, love the color too!
Welcome back!
That’s the bike I intended to buy. I’m still considering the RT, can you tell me if there are any differences between the 2021 and 2022?
No, there's no difference between the two years. Same exact bike :)
take care,
Scott
And congratulations on a new motor bike !!
I really enjoyed my years of ‘Sport Touring’ but my knees and carpal tunnel issues pulled me back onto a floorboard bagger.. beautiful RT 👍🏼
