HOW TO build the ultimate DIY aquarium filter

- TODAY WE FINALLY start to build the aquarium filters for the 120 gallon fish tanks. I went with an overhead sump for a number of reasons. Mostly because i had no choice! The tank are flat against the wall and stacked! So no hang on the backs, no sumps or canister filters and certainly no internal filters. The overhead sump allows me all the benefits of having a sump, yet i don't have to drill the aquariums to have it! Extra water volume, all equipment out of the tank, MASSIVE space for biological media, etc... the benefits are what sold me.

We all hide our filter systems. I love the fact that a filter is out in the open and you can actually see how it is working. Great video.

The only thing I would suggest to you is to have an emergency drain in case the main drain gets clogged!!! Nice as always!!!

I made one of these and for the pumps used my 2 canister filters and put the output into the diy filter so now 3 filters on my tank and it’s amazing to watch the filter work

What a great video 🔥🐠. I’m gonna do a second sump on my two systems. Low flow rate with plants marine pure bricks and a solid mechanical chamber
Lets be honest. We'd watch him fix that dishwasher.
Joey I have a cool setup I have a 125 that overflows into a 125 stock tank right below it. And instead of a return pump I use an fx6 as the return pump and it filters in between when it pumps it back up to the top tank. It really works like a freaking charm, I just have to adjust the flow so that the overflow can handle it because I only have one tube in the hang on overflow. I only turn it down a tiny bit. And then I have a big Sun Sun canister with the UV light on the top tank. I have all large fish in there as I use it is as the last step for a grow out before they go in to my 800 gal or one of my other large setups.
I'd add a shallow overflow on both dividers (without planning to ever need them)

I also put Australian native violets in the filter. I planted It in the lava rock. It drapes over the edge of the planter and looks great.
Also good to see you using electrical tape. Painter's tape is really expensive.

Those some crazy prices for acrylic. I use to build acrylic tanks back in the day when acrylic was fairly cheap.
Just a idea, but I think it would be a good idea to lower the first divider about a half a inch just in case of over flow protection.
But it's above the tank?
@@ADHDAquatics yes, which means if that first bulkhead gets plugged then the water overflows the sides and all over the floor. the sump is toward the back of the tank. in his first video he even talked about the importance of a bypasse

From experience i would have made the baffles 2 cm smaller incase the holes get blocked or the filter foam gets blocked

Did you want a slot or space on top of the baffles so the water can flow through in case the holes get clogged up for some reason?
awesome vid man, u have me thinking now about my 6ft tank, i have two large canisters on it and lots of ugly pipes in the tank, i think its time to simplify , :) :)
