I love the fact you film outside as much as you can. It's more soothing than looking at the inside of a barn. But that is more soothing than inside a house. Outdoors is the best backdrop by far, no matter what you're discussing, unless of course you need access to show us tack and equipment.
Thank you for reminding us of all aspects of a small horse farm. It's neverending. But that's part of what I love so much about it! ❤

Another fun tip, if you have a bare spot create a massive sand pit, we did that in each of our pastures and they love it so much. They roll and sleep in it!

That tiny manure spreader is awesome. I didnt know they made some that small. Not everyone has a big tractor :)

As someone who manages about 4 acres (for llamas), researching the specific weeds you find is often useful. If the weed is an invasive plant (as many are), your state agencies may have information on how to best manage that weed. So if you can find a way to ID the weed and then look it up, you can find out when that weed seeds, what removal methods work best, and what herbicides work if there are animal-safe herbicides available.

It would be so nice if people that actually know-how showed us how-to....its so "modern" to watch videos of people that have no experience doing what they are showing us to do.

Everyone should soil test every 2 years to see what you're lacking. Is it lime, sulfur, etc. Ag extension offices can help with testing and will tell you exactly what to use and when to have great pasture. You just have to pay for the stuff lol.
It really helps to drag pastures and break up manure piles. Free fertilizer and helps keeps pests from laying eggs.

Something to consider, horses don’t digest seeds so if there are seeds in the hay they will pass through the horse. If you can let the manure sit long enough to compost you might be able to kill the seeds.

As someone who bought a five acre farm about a year ago I'd love to hear more tips like this! I don't have a whole lot of money so I'm definitely one to use electric fencing to rotate the fields, but it never dawned on me to keep the weeds short to keep them from spreading.

You can get a chain harrow, or if you are on a budget get 6 inch wood post, or you could use a railroad tie. Attach 2 eye bolts (it's better of the go all the way thru the wood because they will not pull out) attach the chain and drag it thru the pasture. Depending on what you are draging it with the wider it is the better. Less passes equals less time on pasture with heavy machinery

Texas A&M told me to use DuraCor for weed control - it is pasture safe for the horses. I've been using it for years. It works decently well... a little harder to get it to kill crabgrass, but those have short roots and are easy to just pull up (I do that right after a rain - just walk the pasture and give 'em a yank). It's time consuming the first few times, but each year my pastures get better with my attention to them. I bring a little bucket, and as I walk to the barn (and back), I yank as I go, and then dump the weeds in my manure piles (I have compost piles). it all bio-degrades into nice dark soil.

If you only have 2 pastures you can decide them up so it let's longer time for the grass to grow.

I think Glennis means divide them up, or divide the one into 2, so one can be used while the other rests. We call it Rotational Pasturage.

Questions: Is it the manure or the urine that's killing the grass? Also, I was told that you need 2-2.5 acres per horse. Is less required for a miniature pony?

problem for me is i can only find annual ryegrass instead of perennial. i have 17 acres and 4 horses with two large fields. I may need to split one of the fields to let them rest more. I'm resting one now.

IMO Bermuda is fantastic for horse pastures. The roots are longer and spread out so resist erosion better. The horses also don't pull Bermuda up by roots like they do fescue.
Best thing to do is disc up a field and spray to kill everything. Wait minimum of 2 months and sow with Bermuda. You can fertilize with commercial or horse manure just make sure no seeds from another grass. It takes 6-12 months before you can put horses back on it, but you have enough acreage to easily do it.
Find the closest NRSC office to you. Government conservation in every state. They have programs to fund at least partially cost of automatic waterers, fencing, Bermuda grass. It's all for rotational grazing.
      Hope this helps
