- In this deep-dive video I look at how Fallout 3 - a 15 year old Xbox 360 game - now runs at 4K 60fps with high resolution textures on the Xbox Series X.
I'll show how this was achieved, how to ensure your Xbox is set up correctly to enjoy these improvements, and end with some comparison shots.

Updated 19Nov2023:
*Correction to my Correction*
In this pinned message I previously had a "correction" to an error I thought I'd made. I had said Xbox Series S could not run the Xbox One X-Enhanced version of Fallout 3. However, it does.
If a 360 game has an Xbox One X-enhanced mode then the Series S will run it in enhanced mode. However (and this was my confusion) it will not run the enhanced versions of any Xbox *One* games that have enhanced modes (such as Fallout 4). It will just run such games in "Xbox One S" mode.
Sorry for any confusion. God, even this correction is confusing!! :) The fault is mine. It is the result of me not owning a Series S at the time and making assumptions plus some game sites misreporting and me not doing my due diligence and checking.
Cheers... Ramnexus 👍
I love playing Fallout 3 and New Vegas on my Series X. Smooth as butter.
30 fps
@@DepresjaToFikcja ?
@@jbayley6963 F3 is 30 fps
@@DepresjaToFikcja You need to go to manage game and add ons and then toggle FPS Boost on. Then it is 60fps
@@DepresjaToFikcjaIt is not 30fps lmao. It’s roughly at 60fps with 4k on. Looks great on my tv.
Though I don't own my series x anymore, I can absolutely vouch for this. When I first bought it I picked up new Vegas and fallout 3 cheap. Fallout 3 looked so smooth without a single pixle out of place plus 60 fps. Was a fantastic experience.
"My" gonna have to ditch that part my dude, gotta let it go.
@@EQOAnostalgiasigns they shouldn't have let it go, they're not over it yet 😅
@@EQOAnostalgia of all the things to cry over 😂. It's gone, don't you worry about that
How was New Vegas?
@@Pliznitz a tiny bit more pixelated. Still smooth. But honestly, fallout out 3 didn't have a pixel out of place.
This is a fantastic video and I applaud the great effort into covering all relevant information with footage to match. I'm really looking forward to watching your coverage of TES V: Skyrim 👏
Thank you very much for that feedback. Comments like yours are much more motivating than the number of views! Rest assured research on the Skyrim idiosyncrasies video has begun!
I remember when I played fo3 on my series x for the first time, that fps increase and graphics upgrade does a lot
Agreed! If there’s any doubt turn fps boost off and graphics mode to ‘performance’. It’ll send you straight back to 2008 😁
Makes it look newish tbh
Yeah I really love the Xbox backwards compatibility. Games feel like whole Remasters! Even without a native 4K support, the Xbox always upscales the older games to 4K, making them somewhat more crisp then the native 720p output. A good modern TV will add its processing too for a great result. Then you have the 16 times anisotropic filter that is added to all BC games.
The Series X/S truly shine as backwards compatible machines to preserve gems like Fallout 3 or Medal od Honor.
Fallout 3 is just a prime example, because its one of the very few games that got a native 4K patch with 60FPS. Unfortunately New Vegas only got 60FPS.
Thanks for commenting. Yes, I agree with all. Even outputting and recording 360 footage of Fallout 3 at 1080p generated a noticeable improvement in graphics quality over its native 720p.
Yes, i found the use of a newer TV (I have a 2022 LG GS) can crank up the graphics significantly too - though hard to capture for CZcams :)
This is crazy and thank you for showing how even old games can be inpacketed by hardware upgrades
You're welcome. The improvements are impressive. One thing i am not sure of is the level of support Bethesda actually provided to ensure these improvements were implemented. As i mention in the video, i believe the actual game code was not touched, it was a wrapper made by MS. I do know MS had an internal team working on making all these backwards compat patches.

Awesome! Glad it was helpful. A bunch of commenters have recommended i look at Oblivion, so I will do that and/or Fallout New Vegas after finishing off the Skyrim video I'm editing.
Dude, this was a very impressive and informative video! I feel like playing this again.
Do it, do it, do it!! 👍
I played fallout but just like Skyrim as well, not knowing it has a series X upgrade then coming back to the game randomly was a nice surprise.. It's so wild how much of a difference just PERFORMANCE can make on a video game to me.
That's a good question; if you could have *either* performance *or* improved graphics, which would it be? Depends on the game i guess. I'll look at this in the upcoming Fallout NV video, which did not get the graphics improvement.
@@ramnexus true, I think for the most part many people might not even think of PERFORMANCE until they see just how smoothly a game can run under different settings and with different tech. I used to be all about graphics until I experienced some games without Shadows on, or just wanted my gameplay to be way less stuttery (looking at you DayZ on Xbox)
Just downloaded Skyrim to try so good to see it got a boost on series x
This hit my suggested videos, and I gave it a watch. Great job! Very informative, too. F3 is my favorite game ever, and I always start a playthrough on my birthday. 👽
Awesome! Glad you liked it. Fallout 3 rocks :)
Thanks for sharing, learned something new today! FO3 was probably the first game I had for Xbox 360 and I loved it so much.
Definitely do more videos examining other Xbox games as I really enjoy your content and have just subscribed to your channel.
Thanks you very much for subscribing! Currently working on a video for Fallout New Vegas. That'll likely be next. Cheers!
A really in depth video, thanks, I really enjoyed it 👍
This was a great video man, you got a sub from me, small channels got to stick together, I love me some Fallout, and 3 is actually my favorite. It's crazy how the 360 and XB1 weren't that different, but the XBX made everything look so smooth and awesome, I've got to get me that system now, that is a crazy difference, thanks for uploading this, I am definitely going to check out your other content as well!

Thank you very much for this in-detail showcase. Time to revisit this gem!! Haven´t played in YEARS.

Glad you liked it. Thanks for saying so 👍
You did an excellent job with this video! It was very informative and entertaining. I liked and subscribed.
Thanks for saying so. Glad you liked it. Cheers!
One way to improve the visuals of Fallout 3 / New Vegas on PC is to force ambient occlusion through the video card control panel. It is subtle, but makes the visuals look a lot less flat.
Cheers. I'll give it a go.
Would rather use Tale of Two Wastelands with New Vegas Reloaded and all of the New Vegas stability mods.
More performant than vanilla Fallout 3. And you get a more "native" implementation of ambient occlusion that does not bleed through UI. The more recent versions also got dynamic shadows, though they got some issues.
@@Ozzianman Thanks for the tip. The option I suggested was more of an quick an easy "fix".
@@Max_Mustermann It is a quick fix for sure. Another quick fix is using reshade and MXAO. Oh also the Reshade helper mod. I think it's available for both Skyrim and New Vegas. It renders Reshade behind the UI.
But that has another issue that is shared with driver level AO. The AO bleeds through fog and particle effects.
@@Ozzianman Thanks. I will look into it the next time I play New Vegas.
Oh wow. GREAT video. Coincidentally I just redownload on my series x like two days ago, and stumble upon this vid without even searching for it. Wish I could do more to thank you, but here have a sub and a like🤝🤝🤝
Thanks for the sub, you rock! That was great timing then. As an experiment try turning the Enhanced patch and FPS boost off - the difference will hurt your eyes!
Great video, I could see this channel blowing up soon 😎
Wow there's so much packed into this for 16 minutes, well done! I never did get to finish F3 or New Vegas because I was playing the horribly broken PS3 versions. Hopefully I'll get to really enjoy them properly soon. Thanks for making it. Cheers!
I didn't even realize you had 150 subs. I thought I'd look and see maybe a few thousands at least. Great comparison video, though. I subbed either way. I didn't even know some of the tips about performance mode and being able to enable and disable the framerate boost
Cheers! Very nice of you to say, and thanks for the sub. It is strange how they called the old Xbox 360 mode "performance mode". I does provide improved performance for some other games I assume👍
I already knew about the Fallout 3 update on the series x but iv not played it yet. I'm more of an Elder Scrolls fan and the 60fps and 4k Oblivion and Skyrim games have been getting more play time from me. Great video tho 👍

The GOG version of Fallout 3 looks great and runs great for me. Plus, a couple small lighting mods and you are golden.
I agree. It looks great on PC with not too much effort. For some reason I always have screen stuttering that drives me crazy, which is only fixed with a mod - its very odd.
@@ramnexus microstutter is unfortunately very common with Bethesda titles on PC. Even Skyrim had it. Thankfully the Tick Fix mod makes it run smooth as butter.
This video convinced me to go back and play Fallout 3 on XSX after finishing the show. Really wish we could get 4K60 for New Vegas too lol
I need to look up my old games to see how they look. This makes me want to play fo3.
thanks for the video, i have also noticed that playing fallout 3 on steam deck with the compatibility modules it has available make the game far more stable than on modern windows pc's
Good video, I owned the Xbox 360 E and One X, had Fallout 3 installed on both consoles but never knew about the Performance/Graphics toggle setting in the menu options.
I noticed that Fallout 3 did run smoother on the One X because it was set to Performance mode by default, but I always preferred to play it on the 360, primarily for nostalgia purposes and to remind me of the good old days when consoles and games were great. 😊
I agree. There’s something about getting out my old 360 or PS3 and spending good time with a good game that I used to play a lot. Even if I know there’s an updated version out there. 👍
@@ramnexus Yeah, like you I enjoyed playing the old games on their intended consoles, you don't quite get that same nostalgic feeling running them on their modern counterparts, especially when they are digital backwards compatible copies, and you are only using the game disc to let Microsoft or Sony know that you have a physical copy and to initialise a digital download of it.
A time will come when all these old gaming consoles like the Xbox 360 and PS3 etc will be very hard to get hold of and the secondhand prices of them will rise up considerably, making them sought after collector's items.
There are probably more secondhand copies of physical games out there than actual consoles, so prices of Xbox 360 and PS3 games etc will remain very cheap for a good while to come.
Secondhand Xbox 360 consoles are dead cheap to buy now, but I would avoid the original white PHAT models as they were prone to overheating, Red Ring of Death and disc tray issues; opt for the Slim or E models instead that are in good working condition and cosmetically appear to be looked after well.
3 was my intro to the Fallout serious! Hooked instantly!
What a fantastic video, subbed!
Thanks for saying so, and thanks heaps for the sub! Cheers!
Awesome video!
Ive been playing this game and its pretty good. A lot of good old games I never got to play when I was younger.

I'm playing again now (2024) having not played for some years and it looks SO good!
I was just thinking about starting a new save game on Fallout 3 on my Series S. Now I definitely am lol.
Ah excellent. Good timing then. Enjoy the increased draw distance and FPS!
Thank for all your hard work. All that Fallout 3 footage is making me want to go back to my
PS3 saved files that I converted to PC.
No worries. PS3 saves converted to PC? That sounds interesting. Didn't know about that. Thanks, I'll look in to it.
@@ramnexuslong as you got a hard drive with your profile and saves you can convert them in some third party apps for 360 I used horizon
I'd love a full blown remaster of 3, or just higher poly and better geometry, and some modern lighting would be awesome
Played Fo3 for the first time this year, it was amazing
Interesting that Fallout 3 has improved alpha textures, they must have been added to the game when in development, but only able to actually "activate" with the better hardware of today.
All in all, Fallout 3 on Series X is better than many remasters we see today, but for free! Better all around textures, maximum AF, 4K and 60Fps
Yes, I use F3 on XBSX as my go-to example of how good backwards compatibility can look.
You make a good point. I must confess I had to look up what alpha textures are 😀but considering the original game code was not touched, and I can't imagine alpha textures can just be added in the emulation wrapper, there must have been data in the original game. Cheers!
I didn’t know you could check to see if the game had an FPS boost on Xbox. Thanks !!!
Awesome video man! Makes me want to play fallout 3 now

@@ramnexus started it right after I commented this lol
I’ve tried the Mod Fallout Tale of Two Wastelands. It combines Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas
Into one package. Level cap is also increased to Level 80. As well as adding all of 3 and New Vegas weapons and ammo types. I literally can’t play the 3 or New Vegas without the mod.
It’s an amazing mod.
Yes, I’ve heard of it but not tried it yet. Good idea to use NV mechanics - makes so much sense. I’ll give it a go. Cheers!
Wait until you see FO3 with NVReloaded through Tales of Two Wastelands. Don't even need texture mods and it looks so good.
Great video brother great commentary love to see more🫡

Amazing Video.🙌
Looks even better on PC with mods. But still, it warms my heart to see Xbox 360 getting love, wonderful console.
I'd just like to thank you for being so nice with your comment. In many of my videos people give a drive-by "looks better on PC" comment, which doesn't add the the conversation, shows they didn't watch the video (since i usually compare to PC), and is a bit negative. But you made a good point in a positive way and I appreciate it. Cheers!
Excellent work!
Thank you! Cheers!
It looks good on Series S too, I think both consoles run the game with the same render distance and detail the only difference being the Series S plays it at 1080p60 (or upscaled to 4k) and the Seires X plays it natively at 4k60.
This is also because the Series S is slightly more powerful than the One X, its just the console is targeted more towards 1440p120 instead of 4k60.
Thanks for commenting. I agree, though after I made the video I learned that the Series S actually outputs Fallout 3 at 1440p @60fps which is very impressive. Same with Skyrim actually 👍
I play my S more than my PS5, still love both
Awesome video mate
Cheers for that.
Thanks for this informative video. How would I go about modding it? There used to be a 3rd party mod manager (nexus I think?) but I'm not sure if that's still the best way to go since that was years ago...
nexus is the only option really. id also use tales of 2 wastelands for new vegas (and new vegas mods) for a far better experience
Thanks for watching 👍 I use Nexus mod manager for F3, NV, Skyrim and a few others. Took me a while to really get familiar with it, but it does the job!
You can grab Fallout: 3 and New Vegas for $5 TOTAL rn, bc of the launch of the Amazon show, 6 days left ppl
They're single player games with no online functionality, therefore one should *always* pirate them instead, do not give corporations money for products that are old enough to drive a car in some countries!

Beautiful times in 2009 with 360 and F3. Spent over 700 hours in wasteland and I finished game with 100 % achievements. Have to buy series X and try it. Sometimes I’m coming back to the wasteland hoping that I missed something or encounter new things. Fully loaded with the power armour. It will be nice to explore it on series x. Just a slight error I think. From 5:10 to 6:08 any footage that says Xbox One X is actually the series S/X footage as it's running at 60fps
Great comparison video however! Good to see my favourite Fallout (close with NV) getting some love ❤
I’ll take a look but I was quite strict on myself as to labelling and storage of footage from dif consoles. Note the uploaded video is all at 60fps.
Now I need to go back to FO3 and have a look. :)
Are you doing a vid on the upcoming Fallout updates?
I think other channels will get videos out describing the improvements faster than I could so instead I am planning to look at the impact modding Fallout 4 has on frame-rate/frame-timing. I'm going to wait until the update drops before doing that analysis.

Fallout 4 is phenomenal, I used to really think I liked 3 but I tried replaying it and apparently I don't actually like the game that much. They really got 4 right. Mmm. Good. Games beautiful, and fun to play. Would have been pretty cool seeing more of fallout 4 before the nuclear devastation, the art design is very nice to see.
I have to agree. Fallout 4 is phenomenal. I might not have said that a year ago but last week I finally finished my 100% playthru of it on XBSX. I think that art style they use (fashions frozen in the 1950's) helps so much. There is so much more to it than I saw when i first played it on release - I used to just do the old 'run and gun' play style, and I missed so much. It ain't perfect (the NPC's could learn to pick up a broom every now and then!) but it was worth putting the hours in. Cheers!
The 60fps boost on older games looks so good.
I agree. It really gives them new life. I love it!
This is the main reason I want a Xbox Series X. I hate that I can't do this on PS5. Not even the original game is available. I thought I read there are remasters coming. I hope so. I mean 3 and NV.
Yes, I hear you. I love my PS and do not have a console preference. However, it seems to me Sony wants to make money from backwards compatibility, which of course they can do as a company trying to make a profit. But their approach is in contrast MS who worked on the three patches I reviewed at their own cost and provided them for free.
Maybe ill finally play it. Always wanted to since i live right in between D.C. and point lookout.
Your comment just reminded me: I had a chance to visit DC a few years ago and was at a subway station when i looked up and nearly fainted - the ceiling took me right back to Fallout 3. That curved ceiling with the square pattens...!! Obviously the game copied the real world, but I'd seen the game first and my brain just couldn't parse it :) There must be a name for that phenomenon!?
@@ramnexus its like a variation of deja vu.... I think. Its funny cause I'm the opposite. I'm in the elevator union and we do escalators too so I've spent months straight looking at that ceiling lol
