The Kanarra Falls Hike near Zion, Utah | 4K (Insta360 One R+)

- August 2020 -- my short hike up to Kanarra Falls near Kanarraville, Utah just north of Zion National Park. The hike is mostly up Kanarra Creek and includes going through two photogenic slot canyons and climbing up over ladders and boulders along the way. Video includes footage from the Insta360 One R, OSMO Pocket, and Pixel 2XL cameras.
Note: this hike now requires a permit and typically a reservation several weeks in advance. The ladders necessary to climb the waterfalls are recommended for agile hikers only and the entire hike is very prone to flash floods, so have a good forecast before setting out.

NOTE: a flash flood in southern Utah last week washed away the iconic ladder at the lower falls! TBD when/if it will be replaced.
Yeah, I didn't learn that until after I had booked my reservation.
Has it been fixed ?
@@carlosvazquez8962 - As of 10 Sept 2021 there was only someone's makeshift solution - a couple of logs leaning against the rocks, with some rope, straps and chain attached to the wall. Some people were nimble or crazy enough to use it. I didn't.
@@carlosvazquez8962 It seems to still be in flux. They replaced it, but then it got washed away again. Then they added a temporary solution, but not sure if still there. I'd call or check the official website for the latest info before heading that way. 👍
@@Acrossutah yes I called . They are going to make a new structure . Will be done in a few months
Appreciate the vid, just got home and hiked the falls Friday. My wife and I were the only ones there, in and out. It was great but also a bit scary if someone were too get injured. This is quite remote for the average hiker. Your video helped me know what to expect. Merry Christmas!
Cool -- glad you enjoyed the video and that you got out to the falls. I bet it was chilly, but still amazing this time of year. Cheers! 🌞✌
nice and wet in there, nice rocks, thanks for sharing Jamal...
Thanks again for watching and the comment. 🌞✌
Thanks for the video. Pretty clear view.
Cool -- thanks for watching. 🌞✌
Thank you, Jamel, and mister shadow for taking me out in this quarantine world.
Thanks for watching! (BTW... Mr. Shadow is mad he only got a brief appearance in this video!)
Soooo beautiful ! thanks for posting these videos, i always get excited when i see a new across utah vid :)
Thanks -- I appreciate the comment. 👍
Did this exact hike but a little further in, three years ago. Amazing. Place is so beautiful. You feel like youre on another planet. Awesome video
Very cool -- I too had hoped to go above the second falls, but... time was short since I started so late in the day. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. 😀👍
I have been watching your excellent videos since you started. Thanks so much my friend.
Thanks so much -- I appreciate that! 👍
Awesome!!! More day hikes!! Thank you Jamal, needed this today.
Thanks! Should have one more coming soon, then... still TBD what happens this fall.
They have replaced the ladder! I love this hike its so amazing!
Yep -- I already miss the old one! The new one is so ugly, but will probably be much safer and easier for people to climb. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🌞👍
Beautiful, thanks and love from Australia
Thanks so much!
Just beautiful.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video, Jamal! That first ladder made me nervous. Glad you survived it! Dovie.
Yeah -- the fact that it was wet/slippery made it even worse -- I'd definitely recommend using both hands!
Thank you!!!
Thank YOU!! 😀✌
Great video and that's a great place to visit 💯💯
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Jamal! No hiking for me this year. Maybe next year - appreciate your uploads!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing. Not so easy with those slick ladders and slick rocks. I think you just did that hike for me.
Thanks for watching! Yeah... the climbs would be so much easier if they weren't all wet!
There never fails to be an "almost there" person on every hike
True! This time the personal was actually fairly accurate though. 😀👍 Thx for watching.
Hey....A++ good to see you in action......well done!
Thanks so much! 👍🍻
We've been hiking in southern Utah many times. Have not been here, though--looks like a lovely hot afternoon jaunt. We've been watching and taking inspiration from many of your videos. (Would love to do a long, long hike!) Don't know why it took so long to subscribe! Thanks for all the wonderful work you do.
Thanks so much! Feel free to drop me a msg via my website if you ever have any questions. 👍
very impressive scenert one of th best
I love your videos♡
Thanks! 👍😀
NICE to SEE Thanks
Thanks!
Even the pros experience some slippage from the algae monster. 🤣 Nice to see what it looks like high above that first waterfall and ladder where most pics are taken and shared.
Yep! There was definitely some slippin' and slidin' walking up that stream. Glad I didn't fall down completely --- though it would have been funny since I was recording at the time. 😀 Thanks for watching!
Great footing. I did not make that far. I visited in 2000. Nobody was there and the first leader was made of wood.
That must have been great. It's been on my radar for a long time, but just never made it happen. I think the new quota system is probably for the best as a few years ago it seemed to be really out of control based on photos. Now I think if one goes early morning, or late in the day like I did, the crowd isn't too bad.
Thanks for posting the video. Awesome footage. How long did it take to complete the hike? Greetings from Germany
I spent about 3.5 hours on the hike. It could be done faster -- or slower if you want to lunch/lounge/etc. It's about 4 miles roundtrip.
Great footage! About how long would you say it took to complete the roundtrip hike?
I did it late in the day and took my time and spent probably 3-4hrs on the hike. It could be done faster, or even slower if you want to just chill in the stream/falls for a while. Have a good one if you go. 👍
Great footage! Did u have to change up your battery pack anytime during the hike?
Thanks! Nope -- one full battery (standard) lasted the whole hike. I don't remember it getting too depleted, but some of the footage is from my Pixel 2 -- so that helped spread out the load. 👍
WOW! So beautiful! I've never heard of these falls before :D. Curious - do you get the permits to hike this @ the Zion ranger station in the park after reserving them online, or how does that work?
That first ladder made me nervous; kudos to you for daring to film while climbing it.
Great to see a new video from you, Jamal. Thanks for posting both these videos and your reports on your WordPress site.
Stay safe and enjoy a great fall season in the canyons...which I'm hoping to do myself once it cools down a bit!
This isn't a permitted hike through the park. I believe it's private property so you pay an entrance fee. I'd check their website to see what the current situation is. When I went, we showed up at the entrance around 11am and were able to get in no problems at the kiosk.
@@narwhal004 Thanks for the info! Did you reserve a permit ahead of time, or just walk up to the kiosk and get a permit for that day? I can't imagine it's as bad as trying to get a Coyote Buttes permit :/
@@sonyaj66 check with their website. What I did years would be different than this year. This is nothing like coyote buttes.
Yeah -- this is just north of Zion and the town of Kanarraville owns some of the property and they regulate access. Permits are in high demand, but nothing like Coyote Buttes. I got mine about 2 weeks in advance, but for a weekend one would probably need to plan farther ahead. The official site: www.kanarrafalls.com.
@@Acrossutah - thanks for posting the name/link to the actual website to get the permit; I had no idea it would be the name of the town. I will have to look that up on the map, since I've never heard of it before. Thanks again for all the effort and work you put in to making these amazing movies and videos for us!
I have watched many of your videos numerous times, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
Nice video. How are you liking the Insta360 One R? Is it the 1" edition?
Thanks! So far so good. I think it has great potential for my type of hikes, but... it's temperamental at times. I have the twin edition -- so the 360 and 4K mods. Since it was so late in the day the canyon was fairly dark (more so than it appears.) The camera captured it fairly well, but... a bunch of grain and some blur/stabilizing issues were the downside.
great footage! thanks for sharing.. what kind of camera /video did you use?
Thanks! This was shot with an Insta360 camera along with my Pixel phone. Cheers! 🌞✌
Hi,a silly question: do I have to get the shoes wet in order to hike there? never done that before. How soon the shoes will get dry and isn't super uncomfortable to walk in soaked shoes? Thank you. It's a great video.
yeah -- one has to walk in the creek, so your shoes/feet will get soaked. Some wear TEVAs or similar, but I prefer water shoes, sneakers, or boots and just get them wet (it's not that bad.) Neoprene socks can help. Thanks for watching!
Great... Done subcribe for more video next...
Nice video..... on what site do you make the reservation for the hike??
Thanks. It's on official site run by the city: www.kanarrafalls.com/
Thank you so much for the video! Could you please let us know what the mileage is to the 1st waterfall from the entrance?
It's only about 1.5 miles, but it seems much farther than that due to all the creek crossings The second waterfall is less than a half mile more. Thanks for watching! 🌞👍
@@Acrossutah thank you!
What there's no turn around? you have to go straight up and back? Wow. great info. guess I'll have to find some info on the net my customer said it was easy; she must be pulling my leg or tripping cause that was not easy Thank you, Mr. Green.
Yep -- just one way up and then the same way back. It's not too bad if you have on good shoes and not too afraid of heights. Thanks for watching and the comment. 👍
@@Acrossutah Great video! What kind of shoes would you recommend? I'm about your age and will be there later this month. Thanks!
How it where do you get the permit? How much time is needed? Trip in mid May. How long did it take you to the lower falls? Is the water cold? What time of year did you go?
Did you even watch the video?! 😉 IE... most of these answers are in the video, but... the permit is available online via the city's website. It's a half-day hike for most. Maybe an hour to the lower falls. The water was not cold for me, because it was mid-August (but in May the water is likely to be a little chilly.) Have fun! 👍
@@Acrossutah yes, I looked at some of the replies - got the link and bought the permits. Thanks for the visual - helps me know what to expect.
When did you go? I’m planning an a trip in April.
This was in late August. I love the spring and April could be nice, but the water is likely to be quite chilly then so you may want neoprene socks. Have fun. 👍🌞
What do you wear on your feet for a hike like this???
Usually for extended hikes through the water I just wear my normal boots often with neoprene socks. It's tough on the boots, but I have better traction than with water shoes/chacos/etc. Thanks for watching.
@@Acrossutah THank you.
Must have been lonely without Mr. Shadow...
Yeah... he was there in the beginning, but... didn't see him again after entering the canyon. Too bad. 😀
