    Okay it's obvious that most ppl don't know the story behind the Whitney Houston cover of this song. Houston didn't what to do the song, she heard Dolly's version and didn't know what to do with the song. David Foster, the song producer went into Long Beach to get a copy of the Dolly's recording. The record store didn't have it, but had Linda's album Prisoner In Disguise with this version of the song on it. When David heard the song, he said, he knew what they could do with the song. I am not a musician myself (have many friend that are), they all say the arrangement for the Foster/Houston song is directly taken from this recording; that they just played with the melody line. When Dolly found out, that David and Whitney were using Linda's version, as the template for their recording. She called David on the phone to give him the final verse of the song, which Linda does not use in this recording. Also the intend of the songs or recordings are different. As Dolly and Linda recordings are sung as an ode to mentor song. In the movie the Bodyguard, the song is used as a song about romantic love, which was not the original intent of the song. Linda's version of the song was an album track, and never release to radio.

      I saw a documentary--it might have been "Sound of my voice" and they were talking to one of the band members of the band she opened for the first time she was play auditoriums. (Sorry--I wish I could remember the details better. The important thing is nobody had seen her sing in a huge venue, more in clubs.)
      The guy they were interviewing was saying that the main act and some others were voicing some general concern about her vocal abilities to "fill" the venue.
      Then she started singing.
      LOL.

    I'm guessing others will share this with you, but Dolly Parton was the original artist of this song (wrote and sang it for Porter Wagoner, whose show she was leaving). Linda's came along a short time later. I'm sure there must be a couple others that covered it as well. Whitney's version came along much later and of course was a major hit.

She has had so many hits such as "Blue Bayou", "You're No Good", "Long Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc. Ronstadt also did two great duets, "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram) & "Don't Know Much" (with Aaron Neville). You keep referring to this 1975 Linda Ronstadt version as a cover, and it is. But the Whitney Houston version is also a cover and came MUCH later than this (early 1990s). The original is from 1974 and was sung by Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton also wrote it and she wrote it specifically for Porter Wagoner. Dolly had been a regular on his show for several years and wrote this for him when she departed his show.

    Other female singers I would recommend are: Patti Smith (Because the Night, Dancing Barefoot), Dusty Springfield (Son of a Preacher Man, Goin' Back), Joan Jett ( I Love Rock n Roll, Bad Reputation), Tina Turner (The Best, Steamy Windows). And definitely not forgetting Olivia Newton-John who very sadly passed away yesterday. Great songs from the film Grease (for example Hopelessly Devoted to You, You're The One That I Want, Summer Nights), and in 1971 she had a hit with a Bob Dylan song If Not For You. RIP Dame Olivia. Also, I must just mention Judith Durham, who also very sadly passed away a few days ago. She was the singer with the Australian band The Seekers who I remember so well from the 1960s. She had a wonderful voice with songs such as The Carnival is Over and I'll Never Find Another You. RIP Judith. Just a few suggestions, guys, there are so many great female singers out there including the wonderful Floor Jansen of Nightwish, I know how much you love her voice. Yes, this is a broken record speaking, Dolly Parton is the songwriter and the original artist for this song. This song was originally written as a farewell letter to her co-star/boss Porter Wagoner, she use to be a regular on his show "The Porter Wagoner Show", but she started to out shine him and they kept butting heads, so she realized it would be best, for both of them, if she left and so, she wrote the letter which turned into a song that brought her great fortune. Linda Ronstadt is a great singer and performer but this isn't her song nor is it Witney Houston's, Dolly gets full credit, maybe you could check out the original version sometime, she even sang it on The Porter Wagoner Show. Thanks for the reaction!

    This was my first exposure to the song, and I loved it immediately. Still do. There's nothing to gain by comparing Dolly, Linda, and Whitney, because they're all great. The way the Trio got together is that Linda and Emmylou got together one evening to sing for fun, and they discovered that they both had the same favorite singer: Dolly Parton. I consider Dolly a brilliant songwriter, and this song goes a long way to proving it.

  • @Caprizonica
    @Caprizonica Před rokem

    Whitney's version is actually based on Linda cover and not Dolly's original. Allegedly, Kevin Costner pitched Dolly's song to the producers and could only find Linda's record for them to listen to it so WH is basically a pumped up version of this one.
    That's the official story but I don't know if it's real because Whitney's mother did back up vocals for some Linda's records and shows so I bet Whitney knew Linda's music better than they said. I think even Houston's mother told her that out would be difficult to top Linda's cover.

    Whitney Houston has said that they chose to use Linda Ronstadt's version of this song for her " Bodyguard's" performance. Dolly Parton wrote the song as a goodbye to Porter Wagner, It wasn't a romantic relationship but a very special relationship and how he helped her get noticed by the public. I agree both versions are amazing. Whitney had the luxury of a full musical production. Linda's is a stripped down version and just as nice.

    So what is happening here, is that Dolly wrote and recorded this in the early 70s and Linda covered it in 1975, but with a totally different arrangement and vocal style, BIGGER PIPES. Whitney KILLED IT in 1992 and was credited for arranging her version of it herself. Linda's version reveals that, although Whitney knocks it out of the park, she DID NOT ARRANGE IT - Linda did! Scandalous I know, but interesting. If Linda heard Whitney's version, she could have matched it or bested it! I ADORE Whitney, so don't get me wrong, and she demolished it, but she did not arrange it.

    Dolly Parton wrote this and she is the bar one must reach on this one. And if you check out more country check out Loretta Lynn. She had some great ones she wrote. Such as Fist City…you ain’t woman enough to take my man…now I’ve got the pill…

    Personally, I like Linda's and Dolly's voices much better than Whitney's voice. Even Kenny Rogers sang it beautifully.

    Try Dolly's version. Linda sang it in the same style as Dolly. When Linda was going to record it, she asked her good friend Dolly, if she could record it. Dolly gave her blessing. Very sweet of both of them. When Whitney heard Dolly singing it, Whitney said "What is that bitch doing singing my song". What a difference between Linda and Whitney. This was reported in the papers at the time. I never liked Whitney's version. Too over the top. She was showcasing her voice rather that the sentement of the lyrics.

    You are doing yourselves a disservice if you do not listen to one of the many versions of this song as sung by Dolly Parton that can be found on CZcams. I am not suggesting you need to react to it on your channel, but you should at least listen to Dolly sing it, (one of the versions from 1974 would be best,) just for you to hear how the actual writer of the song (dolly herself) chose to sing it.

    The GOAT of this song will always be Whitney Houston. You guys gotta check it out and hear for yourself.
