With a chance at qualifying for Europe for the first time since 2020/21 on the line, Hoffenheim thumped dismal Darmstadt 6-0 last time out. That scoreline pushed them into the last European spot of seventh in the Bundesliga as things stand, while the margin of victory has opened up an avenue to snatch sixth place from Eintracht Frankfurt on the final day, whom they trail by three in both points and goal difference.
That result also saw them finally keep a clean sheet after a bewildering 27 league games without one, which set a notorious club record. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men can ill afford to revert to their poor defensive habits here, as the American aims for a first win over Bayern Munich in what will be his eighth attempt as a manager (D3, L4).
By contrast, Bayern’s departing head coach Thomas Tuchel will be looking to further improve on an impressive record of just one defeat in his 16 meetings in the dugout with Hoffenheim (W9, D6), hoping to end what’s been a poor season on a positive note for the usually serial champions. Much has been said about Bayern’s first trophyless campaign since 2011/12, although perhaps Tuchel has escaped heavy criticism in light of the comical comments about the ‘Harry Kane curse’.
The Bavarian faithful may, however, turn their anger on the ex-Chelsea boss should he suffer a second H2H defeat here, as it would put their team at risk of finishing outside the Bundesliga top two for the first time since 2010/11, with Stuttgart hot on their heels. The odds of that happening are understandably slim though, as Bayern’s record on the season’s final day speaks for itself, with just one loss in the last 20 campaigns (W17, D2).
Players to watch: Andrej Kramarić has been in superb form, with eight goal contributions in his last six games (G4, A4), and has proved especially dangerous at home, where seven of his last nine Hoffenheim goals have come. He’ll be attempting to outgun Bayern veteran Thomas Müller, who has seven goals and 11 assists in this H2H.
Hot stat: No Bundesliga team has seen more of their league matches produce over 3.5 goals this season than Hoffenheim (20) and Bayern (19).
