Should be mentioned that Japan has a long history building flying boats. The WW2 era Kawanishi H8K (nicknamed 'Emily' by the Allies) was four engine flying boat that looks rather similar to the much more modern ShinMaywa US-2. One role for these not mentioned but could see very useful would be in woodland fire-fighting. With a long endurance and able to carry 15 tons of water make them a very effective platform in that regard. One of the most important keys in fighting wildfires is to put them out before they spread. Using a US-2 first to patrol dry areas to scout for new fires then be able to go to a nearby (suitable) body of water to scoop some out and return to dump load(s) would be an extremely helpful tool for almost any country including (specifically) the US Forest Service. Interesting that the business of fighting forest fires in the US has largely moved from a government to the private domain.

Hats off to the Japanese for their continued faith and development in the flying boat. While other countries abandoned the concept, Japan remained steadfast, and now has it down to a science. . .

The OH-6 "Little Bird" is NOT a U.S. Air Force aircraft. It is U.S. Army, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.
YES ! The US2 is an awesome STOL seaplane....but last I knew it was a whopping 100 million due to it's small production numbers...so i don't know where you are getting 160 mil. from. If we were to buy a couple dozen, I would hope they would come in at well under 100 million. We're going to need some seaplanes. We're back in the Phillipines.

@@D0daD0daD0daD0da Flying boats had their heyday, because there weren't a lot of runways back then. If we are going to help the Philippines get a presence out in the S.China sea and hold their islands, those islands are way out there,with no runways. . You saw the guys who live on that rusty old beached ship? It takes 24-36 hrs. to get to them. We need seaplanes...to help the Philippines. This US2 is true STOL...it's outa the water in a heartbeat, and for now , it could be all there is. We got nuthin'. You would think the coast guard would have/need some seaplanes ...wouldn't ya ? Land on the water and rescue people, etc. I don't get it. However,they are always the stepchild when it comes to funding.
You guys wouldn’t believe how fast and short the US-2 can take off WATER.
We need something like US-2 here in the USA....there is nothing like it for maritime rescue.A jet version like the Beriev would be much faster as well.
Shin Maywa has been around a very long time. I was deployed to MCAS Iwakuni with VMF-513 Det A in the mid 70s and they were around then. Big plane and graceful when landing. I could see the Navy being able to use a few of these.
@@D0daD0daD0daD0da I think the real place for the Shin Maywa was costal patrol and water rescue in heavy seas. The Shin Maywa had a very deep freeboard and could land in very heavy seas so it was ideally suited for rescue.
Japan also had the finest Sea Plan in operation in WWII. The Dutch Navy captured and flew them for two years.
What plan did they hav?

The US2 could augment USMC operations; it would find uses in the USCG, and prove a valuable asset for maritime drug interdiction. Keeping in mind logistics, repairs/service maybe our military could work with hs Japanese manufacturers of the US2 to develop some multirole parts that could be used to maintain other aircraft currently in service. If we were to purchase maybe 200 of these aircraft, the per unit price would most likely go down

A flying boat development in Japan after WWii was originated from Shinmeiwa's prototype flying boat commissioned by Grumman.
Shinmeiwa continued the development, developed US-1 and its successor US-2.
Since Japan banned exports of weapons and joint development of weapons with a foreign partner in 1970's, Japan was unable to export this.

This plane is a much better option than bolting some floats on the bottom of a C130, even as mighty as the Herc is.

13:14 says F-35B is only variant with a built-in gun. That’s a boo-boo; Air Force’s F-35A is the one with the internal gun. B and C models mount an external gun pod on a hardpoint if they want a gun.
That plane is a bit expensive but I too have a 15HP outboard :)

The Shin Meiwa US-2 is actual by far the best amphibious seaplane with stunning STOL abilities. The high price comes because of the low numbers that are build. If some other countries would buy them and can build higher numbers the price would decrease at once.

Embed solar cells in the US-2's upper wing/body surfaces. Use the electricity for electrolysis to make hydrogen from sea water to fuel hydrogen powered turboprops. Virtually, unlimited range US-2. Cool aircraft. Good design Japan.
Don't you think you'd need to generate a lot more power than any solar array the plane could accommodate for that?
@@Nerval-kg9sm Checked and you are correct. Wikipedia listed the efficiency of current methods as ~9 liters of water and ~50 kWh of electricity is required to produce 1 kg of hydrogen. Rate of hydrogen production would be to low to be practical for refilling the hydrogen tank system needed to feed 4 hydrogen fueled turboprops. DoE test bed hydrogen semi used an 80kg (700 bar) tank system. Sure the Shinwa would need something considerably bigger. Would take too long to fuel to be practical.

It seems that DARPA and Boeing through Aurora Flight Sciences corp are competing, with the "Liberty Lifter" GEV/seaplane.
Their next sea plan is as huge as aircraft carrier
European countries must have been surprised by the fact that this flying boat was only used to rescue a few people in distress! The fact that $160 million can only be used to save lives!
You are correct and for the Europeans they should restart production of their BV-222s Short Sunderland using A400M engines because in reality the US-2 flying boat is actually your WW II H8K Emily flying boat airframe modified to use C-130J engines the predecessor US-1 flying boat actually combined H8K Emily airframe with the engines of MH-53 Pave low

well supersly that us-2 is bacly japins verson of the usa WWII flying boats they used to shoot down back in the day. but now japan is useing those same flying boats now but now with modern overhuals and made from scrach from the gronud up for moden naval use.

TBH I thought seaplanes were totally in the history books except as a niche thing for tourists and as toys for the ultra rich, not as a too, for militaries. Goes to show what goes around comes around again.

its actaly bascly japan's bacly modfiyed updated homebrewed verson of the few very last of the orgnal usa navy WW2 quad prop enegines of flying boat aircraft that was left over from WWII. so bascly japin just copyed the airframe basices of the old usa WWII flying boats and then just updated the tech and fonuson for modern naval oprations. they also said this in the video as well.

have been saying, we need a water bird for years...we are now making island bases in the pacific...we are way behind the curve here...like the A10, it to was under estimated (llike we don't need guns on a fighter) why we have higher ups making these calls, is rather DUMBBBBB....now get rigby island back in action (last known sea plane base around) and bring back those old designs (Catalina, De Haviland twin otter on floats for example ,Viking Canadair 515) install turbines on those piston birds....follow learn, then lead after
