- Part 2 of this Game Boy series. Here I address the vertical line issue which plagues so many original Game Boys. This repair is very easy, you just need a triwing screwdriver to open it up, and a soldering iron.

I know it may be tough sometimes but I do wish you would upload more because I absolutely love your content! Thank you
I'm aiming for one a week consistently. If i can get more in around the holidays, I will, but it's challenging right now as I can't get as many broken systems with the Canada/US border closed.
Thank you for this. Snagged an original Gameboy for $10 last week and thought I’d need to swap out the screen. This worked like a charm!
My Gameboy would display almost nothing, maybe 5 little lines. This worked like a charm. Used my crappy soldering iron that I use for plastic, low at around 400f. Applied pressure and slowly dragged it across the ribbon like a loading bar and all of the black came back gradually. It was a pretty extreme case too. And when I took the rubber pad off, it took the adhesive off with it. That's lucky :)
Thanks for this fix! No adhesive keeping the board down by the way. It's the 3 clips holding the top half of the board down.
Thanks so much for this. Worked like a charm. First time I've tried a repair like this and this video was super helpful and had me enjoying the experience.
Great video!! I actually used my hot air rework station at 600 degrees, moving back and forth quickly from one side to the other. I quickly put the rubber strip back in place after removing the heat and held down pressure on it for 10-15 seconds. It worked amazingly well!!
Best channel on youtube. You're such a genius, and you always deliver great content, love you Adam.
First time I've ever subbed and actually turned on the notifications. You have helped me immensely over the past couple days fixing my childhood GBA and my dad's OG gameboy. Thank you so much!
Awesome, thanks for subbing and glad to hear the videos were able to help revive your old games.
Good to see back on CZcams again Adam. Always enjoy your videos, I learn some fantastic useful stuff from yourself. Love your Canadian accent. Big up mate from the UK
Great reference for if/when my DMG decides to start doing this and as always quality content!
Beautiful lighting, Good calm voice, Nice Warnings.
Great Video. Please Do More.
I had no idea you could do that! Awesome! You just saved me money and frustration on my repairs!
Very helpful. Thank you! I'm refurbishing an original Gameboy right now to give to my son and this is the only part I have left to do.
Great video man, as always. Regards from Mexico!
For BEST results use a Qtip to massage the area after applying the soldering iron.
Worked like a charm. Thanks!
Great content as always Adam, Did you get a new camera? Your playback looks cleaner, or is it just me?
Hey Adam! Just saying happy to see a new post and hope everything is going well for you up in Canada right now!
"Were gonna put this piece of rubber back on"
Bro... lmao. You gotta tell us to keep it first... 🤣
Simply love your videos. They are always interesting.
Thanks for the repair video! I saved it to watch later When I have the tools!
Well done. You made it look easy. Other guys on CZcams said it took them up to one hour.
I hope I can do it the way you did. Thank you for mentioning the temperature. Maybe that's the secret.
This one went very quickly. I've had some that were a bit more finicky, but luckily this one cooperated well
So what's the variable heat? Cause I see some that go from 400-420 degrees celsius to 500-520 degrees celsius.
Today I learned the lines on the side of the screen were not a deliberate stylistic choice by Nintendo
Oh my god BLESS this video! I can finally play Pokemon Yellow again without the lines ;_; Thank you!
very nice to know this since im about to fix three of theese myself thank you for this tip
HE. IS. BACK.!!!!
You made me refurbish mine, thank you for the hint!
Thanks bro...i just picked one up today for 40 bucks and it's having the same little problem
Really enjoying the videos!
Very nice video there was something weird on mine it used to have those lines but now there gone
This method works with just about any solder on displays.
The screen from the GBP got black after I cleaned it a little bit... Turns out there was a contrast wheel on the right side and that was the culprit LOL The same thing happened when I got my hands on a Wonderswan for the first time, I had no idea that they had these Contrast Wheels
I bought one of these yesterday from a guy on gumtree. It had horrible lines. Couldn’t see the selector for Pokémon in the menu in Pokémon Red. I left it on a lower shelf on my bookcase and sun shined on it for a bit. Then when I turned it on about an hour ago, most of the dead pixel lines were gone!
good quick fix, this one played ball!
Awesome
Ok, so 99 percent of the time if this DOES NOT work, there is some kind of corrosion that can happen to the traces that the brown strip connects to just underneath the bottom glass edge. Also if any of the traces are ripped underneath the portion that solders onto the board at the opposite end of this ribbon, your pixel lines will not come back. Be sure to take a good look and see if the parts gameboy you buy off of ebay doesn't have rub marks on that ribbon, as it may have been tampered with already, or else you might as well yank the screen out and replace it with an IPS one.
What temperature should you use on the soldering iron?
I wonder f I’ll ever find my mothers old gameboy in the attic though I already have my grandpas gba sp lol though like she said I highly doubt it’s even in our attic
What temperature did you set the soldering iron to ?
Great job!
what temperature did you use to reflow it?
I found and fixed this exact problem about a week ago...
Well made video like always.
Mine has worked perfectly with the exception of one line which doesnt seem to want to disappear, is it knackered or do i just need to persevere
I have a korg triton rack that has vertical lines in the screen...I'm wondering if this will work on that! Cool video!
probably
The real question is what's that going to be like in the long term? Dave over at EEVBlog did something similar and the display just went back to how it was after some time.
Great question. Time will tell i suppose.
I guess you could add more pressure to the ribbon to force that contact
una pregunta..a cuántos grados centígrados usas tu cautín para hacer esa reparación? obviamente para no quemar la membrana del display!
It didn't work for me. Rubbing the soldering iron does affect the lines, but they never stay, and as soon as I get a few good black lines, others disappear. I can't get any more than about half of them on the screen at once.
I tried this method, worked flawlessly for the lines on the outer edges. But I am stuck with one line near the middle, the soldering iron didn’t seem to help. Any suggestions?
Can we apply glue on the brown plastic for the screen?
This is perfect, exactly what i was looking for,
Hey, I’ve also vertical black lines on my GB display, but when I turn the contrast to 100% everything is full black.
Wow this is genious!!
Random question so I know you repair cartridge based games but do you also repair disc games? Like using a disc resurface machine?
Not really. I've tried getting some light scratches out, but i don't have a resurfacer
Any advise on the heat setting for your soldering iron when doing the ribbon fix?
I have done it with 250°C
How do you stick the rubber under the screen back on again?
Yeeeees he did again
is it possible to convert the screen to a colored one?
Can you heat a knife with a lighter and do it with that I don’t have asodder lol
Anyone know why my handheld game screen flickering when open game volume?😮
i always worry about battery leaks for health reasons because of my OCD. i'd like to know your opinion on it.
I don't imagine here's much of a health concern. If you do encounter a leak and you're worried about it, you can always wear gloves or just make sure you're washing your hands well if you touch it. Obviously you don't want it in your eyes, but I don't imagine you'll absorb much though your fingers which is usually pretty thick skin with a small leak like this.
What is that black material you are hitting with the iron? Do you think hot air might work as well?
I've never tried. My concern with hot air is that it isn't very accurate so you may actually make it worse
And you risk damaging the actual screen
Godlike
nice just supported u
Did this and it worked but then 3 lines came back a few months later, went back to do the same trick again but no matter how long I do it for the lines just won't go away, any advice?
Maybe a little more heat and pressure. Just need to create a lasting bond
What about horizontal lines? I take it that’s a different deal altogether.
It's a mess. It can be fixed but it's WAY trickier and the risk of making it worse is pretty big.
Anyone have a recommended temp to do this at?
what about horizontal lines
Will this work on a game.com screen?
Hello!
Hi
How would you fix horizontal lines? i have one with that issue
Similar process, except it's much more difficult to access. The ribbon is tucked behind the display so i assume the vertical ribbon needs to be desoldered to access it
@@RetroRepairs iirc there were some screws on the ribbon cable in the front of the screen, if you remove them you should access the ribbon cable on the back of the display without desoldering
i have heard that the screen is toast if you have horizontal lines, you're better off just getting a new dmg, or modding it with a IPS screen.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nice video. But don’t EVER use a knife near that ribbon. They tear of you look at them wrong. Solid content!!!
Can you fix any Sega Game gear
I've got one that i restored a while back
You can do the same process with that, but in my experience it doesn't last. The missing lines will come back after a while.
Are horizontal lines fixable?
Yes, but they're a mess. There are videos online that show you how. If you mess up I suppose you can always buy an IPS as a replacement.
Step 1: remortgage my house to get a Philips screwdriver
if it was me, i would just get the RIPS or FunnyPlaying IPS screen for it and swap out the original screen with the IPS screen.
It's important to preserve the ones that are fixable. IPS screens are a great replacement if you get screen rot or a smashed screen, though!
Oof
You have done this before. Something new please.
what temperature did you put your iron at to let it melt solder but not the cable?
I had it at 500f, you can go even lower which may take longer, but will be safer. Higher temps need to ensure you're always moving as to not burn the ribbon connector.
I'm not sure how much heat it can handle, but there's no real reason to go much higher
