Restoring the original gameboy - Retroration project

- In this week’s project I will restore the original Nintendo Gameboy. As a 90’s kid I thought it would be cool to restore a Gameboy. Or should I say retrore. I bought this one from Japan. It’s obviously dirty but it’s also very yellow no rust this time. With this rust would be very bad. However the screen is broken and it is missing a lot of vertical lines. Otherwise it seems to be fine. I had some issues with turning it on when I tested it but after I got it on, I’ve had no trouble. The batteries I used were probably dead. It’s also missing the screen cover/lens. I bought a new one amzn.to/2I61BTx
I started the restoration by opening the Gameboy. I needed Y1 screwdriver ( for example amzn.to/2D1SUWg) (my kit was bought locally and could't find that online). This was terrifying because I have almost no experience in this type of work, but one of the main reasons for this channel is for me to learn new stuff so that was intentional. I learned online this neat trick to fix the vertical missing lines. I’ve heard it doesn’t work or you can’t do it if you have horizontal empty lines. I used soldering iron to rub the area under the screen where the connections are. I used temperature of 300 Celsius. This is not a tutorial but a piece of entertainment and something to give you inspiration what to find out before starting project like this. In case you still want to use this as tutorial and risk ruining your Gameboy, keep the soldering iron constantly moving and don’t heat up one area for too long. There are grat tutorials about this on youtube. I probably didn’t have to take the ribbon cable off. I was just following a tutorial and realized it afterwards because I didn’t watch the whole tutorial before starting…
Next I disassembled the rest of the device and sunk the plastic shell (everything removed) into 12% hydrogen peroxide. And heated the solution in zip lock bag to 45-50. Water bath helped me to keep the temperature stable. Every once in a while I opened the bag to let the built up oxygen out to keep it from building pressure. Higher temperature or higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide will make the reaction faster but higher temperature will ruin your parts. I found that If you go much over 50 degrees celcius, your plastic will loose it’s original color. This method only removes the yellowing and the part won go all white. More temperature can also melt the plastic. There is also something called retrobright. It’s a paste or gel or whatever which combined to UV-light will have this same effect. Retrobright however has been reported to sometimes give uneven/patchy results and I didn’t want that since my parts were already very patchy. This worked beautifully, it got back the light gray color it used to have.
While putting it all back together I tested the screen once more to make sure it worked. The last line I had a lot of trouble with, had come back. This time it only took me like 5 minutes to get rid of it. Now the screen has been working nicely. After I had put it back together I still had to attach a new screen protector/lens to the shell. Together the whole project probably took 15-20 hours of active work, I had never done this type of ork and filming sometimes makes the process a lot slower. The editing is probably another 15 hours of more.

I love the fact that you can actually hear it being repaired and not annoying background music
i think it could of used some pokemon music lol
@That Thing Dalton yea but it should be played quietly
Bo Drake back in 1993 when I was nine a classmate let me play with his game boy he has brought a few games for it 👻
Makes you think how it works, music kinda just gives it away now.
Spot on. That's one of the best things about this channel.
Perfect ASMR, no whispering no talking no music just ambient sounds.
Agree!
Doom2pro I was just explaining the same thing to my wife
feels like yourself doing this thing without anysound just you and the thing

Agree!
Think how much could be restored / recycled if we could all repair things like this. Incredible work . Was a pleasure to watch .

We used to have machines that last us a 100 years.
Now it's a question if it lasts us 100 days...
Plot Twist: The “Subscribe” was there since 1989.
Wait who said it wasn’t there?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
That goes without saying.
*mindblown gif*
Wow 5 years before this particular GB was manufactured mind blown
Love how he just gets right to work and how he doesn’t start the vid by talking through half the damn vid!! This guy gets it!
I agree 200%. And those who use annoying music.... grrr... In that video, we can hear everything. Perfect concept :)
Also love how he slides the shell across the floor and table after just cleaning it 🙈😬
Well He is not a how to video.
Yes! Don’t give me an intro with some cheesy song and dance.
Nice idea subscribe
That was the smoothest "subscribe" I've ever seen lol
I know right!
i laughed when i saw that
Right?
He should've been like: "I don't know how that ended up there"
I don’t see it?
There is something so satisfying about it looking almost factory new at the end. No discoloration at all. Most kids at the time (now adults) won't even remember it looking like that.
I always try to watch one or two of these ‘restoration videos’ before bed, though normally they’re on rusty antiques and not...Game Boys. They don’t necessarily make me sleepy but they’re very relaxing and get me in that calmed mindset. Just know you’re helping at least one person sleep a bit better at night with these videos ❤️
That industrial strength glue...still sticking after 25+ years...love the vids. Keep it up!
James Ledg exactly 30 years. 1989 - 2019
25+ he said 25 or more
Pixel Zman Casual Chris said Exactly 30 years, he was just saying the exact amount. Not 25 or more, learn how words work, ok?
watching you solder the screen back to life was like watching sorcery
No sorcery, it'll fail again in months.
@@macdonalds1972 why?
@@macdonalds1972 theres always one of you assholes. lol
@@macdonalds1972 You were the asshole here man.
HONESTLY. one of my ‘89 game boys has some dead pixels too so i’ll need to try this 👀
We have to admire how much he knows about so many things and how he has the skill to not mess anything up
Well that skill came after messing things up!
And that's what we fear...

There’s something so nice about watching a professional do what he does best.
Can’t wait to see him restore an Xbox with the red circle of death some 20 years from now
lol
He already has the skill. If the box hasn’t been completely fried.
Red circle of death isn’t too difficult, had a Limited edition Halo 4 one and took it apart and found out the fan had gone, just a simple replace and it was back to working order
@@cathalevans6754 The red ring of death can be an indication of a wide variaty of errors. You were lucky it was the fan.
WH250398 the original guys comment was saying that he couldn’t wait to see him fix a red ring of death Xbox when even though there is a variety of ways, if he got the right Xbox with the ring of death, it would be a simple fix, my Xbox was the first fix I ever done
Is it just me that imagines this guy as the dude from toy story that repairs woody?

With the creepy slow hand movements 1:03
I was expecting a munching sound of him eating a Styrofoam peanut.
Slipping in some ASMR for effect
Hey man, we ain't judgin'.
Yummy
I was expecting the same thing.
1. I had absolutely no idea that's how the screens worked and 2. That was the smoothest subscribe plug I've ever seen 😂
The way he carelessly tossed the box in the beginning of the video made me laugh.. no idea why. It was just hilarious to me. 😂
I think that's the purpose
Lol
Lolz it’s because it’s just not his way. He’s usually so methodical and precise. We don’t see him just throw things to the side.
Dude was excited to have a Game Boy.
I think it was how maticulious and carefully he opened the box, that made the chucking so funny.
Asmr + Humour + Restoration. I need nothing more in my life.
C4sperJ4ack that's what I was thinking!!!!!
You'd like My Mechanics www.youtube.com/@mymechanics
Seeing this bright and beautifully restored brings back my first contact with a Gameboy in 1990. At that time this thing was magic to me! It must be somewhere up the attic. Time for restoration!
How’d it go?
Fantastic work! Apart from the missing screen, my 1989 Game Boy looks exactly the same. It's been left on for days. Sat under the baking Mediterranean sun for hours on holidays, again switched on, dropped many times, thrown, rained on and even fallen in a swimming pool on holiday. Yet it still works as well as the day it was bought when I was 7. That was 30 years ago. Drop an iPhone from a height of one foot and it shatters. The speaker on my Huawei P Smart packed in after less than a year. A lot of today's electrical device manufacturers should be looking uncomfortably at their shoes now.
20 years ago:
> Pricey, couldn't afford it
2019:
> Even pricier
So true!
i legit got one in wonderful condition for $15 on ebay
regigiygas wow, that is special! Normally it is expensive!
TheTNT Box the used ones are pretty cheap, even the ones for parts can be bought and combined into a working model for fairly cheap.
most of the time, they just need cleaning and/or a battery cover
the mint ones, however, will cost you an arm and leg
@@sheepkind That's what you get for owning a piece of art.
I remember being so envious of my friends playing game boy at recess during the 90s.
This guy should open a shop that repairs stuff like this. The skill he possesses in this day and age is rare and takes a lot of patience. Nintendo would be proud!
I feel Nintendo hates all who are unrelated to them messing with their creations

Game Boy Turns 30 This Month!!! 🎉
Awesome restoration process!
It was last week, you missed the birthday.
@@someperson2965 Technically, you are right, but because you are speaking English and not Japanese, I think the release Anniversary you should be celebrating is in another three months on the last day of July (North America), or wait another year if you live in Europe. Tbh, not only it’s satisfying but it feels like watching a childhood or nostalgia that was damaged being restored in a good way
The thing i take away from these videos is the love of the medium he has......over and above the technical prowess that is displayed. Each of these is a love note to the genre itself. I find myself smiling from start to finish on each one of these rebuilds. Thanks man...
That was funny how you ever so carefully moved that one packing peanut in the beginning

Might need to "restore" that desk you're using to restore stuff on. lol
PS. That restored Game Boy really is a thing of beauty.
Haha, yeah, the desk/table has seen better days for sure! Not just "restore it," but _actually _*_restore_* it!
Also, I agree about the game system; he "took several years off of it"!

WHY IS THE INCREDIBLY SPED UP SOUND OF SCRUBBING SO AMUSING
It's not sped up. That's his normal working speed.
it's wild to go back to this after watching more recent videos, you got it done and it's a great job, but you're so much more experienced now.
You just restored a part of my youth
That's beautiful.
I felt old when he said this things even older than me.
The 8-bit Guy nods his silent approval.
Lmao, best comment ever

THEN I'M GONNA POUR ON ABOUT AN ENTIRE GALLON OF RETRO BRITE
Fantastic videos! As a nurse, it’s been hard to unwind these last few months. Just discovered your videos and they are perfect, they actually help me get my mind off of my job. Thank you for these videos!
It is actually satisfying that you and many/some other youtubers just up and fix things as you know how these used to be broken to gotten fixed mechanisms work so you can show other people even teach them on how to fix a certain thing that either they or someone else broke it I thank you for making this, it made me learn how these things work.
I’ve kept mine in very good condition and when my son was old enough, he loved playing Tetris and Mario.
I got my first gameboy as a kid when it was released. Did cost 150 DM iirc and came with tetris and i think pinball :)
Though now that i think about it, my father probably played more hours on it than me, especially when the SNES came along ^^

One of your best. I've been given laptops and printers that have failed, and still have about two of each that didn't work out. Going to give them another look. Thanks for your work. FWIW, I make sure i last through at least 80% of the advertisements. It's the very least I can do.
Hey there a channel stealing your videos and reuploading them claiming them as theur own, its only stolen this one and three other game console related vidors so far but I thought id let you know
Edit: its called Best Relaxing ASMR
@Sweet Strawberries UwU I just went to check and yes, it does appear that they have started linking the originals in their description. However when i originally posted this they did NOT link to the original and that also doesnt change the fact that they are still direct re-uploads that they are claiming as their own videos.

The attention to detail is outrageous. My original GameBoy has similar issues with the screen, and now I know why!

A testament to the quality of 90s Nintendo.
OK, that was impressive. The Gameboy has a special place in my heart. Many rainy days were spent playing one. This earned you a new subscriber!

These consoles are iconic, so I'm glad that you rescued one.
I loved this restoration. You did an utterly beautiful job!
Real nice job. And yes... it brings nice memories.
Little trick: when mount back screws on plastic, turn slowly opposite until feel a kind of "klick"... then you tight. This ensure you are on the original "thread" and you do not cut other one.
