    Back in 1988, there were no television stations that used artificial voices to announce events because they weren't available yet. Same with the fax tones. The two-tone attention signal was used, but the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) would have been in existence at that time. Television and radio stations would not necessarily sign off the air, but they did in the original system under CONELRAD up until 1963.

      Imagine the TTS voices are actually human. Mock EBS scenarios like Jakob Hill's 1984 use this method.

    • @Corgipon
      @Corgipon Před rokem +3

      Yes. The “fax tones” are SAME headers, which weren’t used until the EAS was introduced in 1997, and they would play three consecutive times. Same goes for the TTS voices, which were normally used for weather alerts.

    • @SoullessDemon
      @SoullessDemon Před rokem

      Maybe there will be artificial voices that will sound very realistic in the future. We kinda have some of those currently, but this is a trial and error situation. Things will consistently change as time progresses.

    The soundbite of President Reagan was actually from a speech he gave about six hours after the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after launch in January of 1986. Mr. Reagan had planned do deliver his annual State Of The Union speech that evening, but it was postponed a couple of weeks due to the tragedy.

    One caveat on this video. Channel One is NOT used by any broadcaster in the US. It is strictly used for emergencies, and in the event of a nuclear strike, it is used by the surviving members of the Presidency and Congress to continue the government. That was worked out after WWII.
    Besides no NTSC (American) tuner is even equipped with it. Standard VHF channels are 2 thru 13 and UHF channels are 14 thru 51. Now this was expanded to 14 to 83 (32 more added on the UHF band). Now it's digital and multiple sub channels now exist in addition to the primary. But no channel one.

    You know in one part of Stephen King's book the stand, the CBS Please Stand By screen is referenced in towards the end of the first act, in which everything begins to fall apart. This kind of gave me a visual of what the EBS would have done in a pandemic style event. Good job.

    I'd like to bring up that the announcer would not being saying "Please Stand By" while the SAME Tones are being broadcast. Those are relayed throughout the network, and the voices would interfere with the data the tones contain... Also, in 1988, the EBS would still be using the 1500 Hz tone, not the two-tone attention signal... That's from the newer EAS.

  • @TechMonsterDude

    I do not know why but the words “THIS IS NOT A TEST” on the blue screen creeped me out. I guess it’s because I’ve only seen that screen for tests only, so it’s creepy having it say otherwise.

    However, just for a historical note, In the 1980s alert tone that he heard, that long beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep Was the alert noise. No header tones like we get today. No text to speech voice either… The message would have been read by an announcer person
    Having said all that though, still really good lock up… Nice job
    Ps A lot of people find the tts creepy... Not me, I use it on a daily basis to access my phone and other things because I have terrible eyesight… The thing that really scares me is that long beeeeeeeep. Growing up in tornado alley in the 1980s when that came on you never knew was it a test or a new card or a tornado or what exactly For the first few terrifying second it’s c
