CIVIDALE DEL FRIULI - Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

Due to the damage suffered by the earthquake of 8 August 1364 in the mid-15th century, the reconstruction of the sacred building in Venetian Gothic style was decided. After 1502 the reconstruction was entrusted to Pietro Lombardo who built the current cathedral in a mixed Gothic-Venetian and Renaissance style. At the end of the 18th century, the architects Giorgio Massari and Bernardino Maccaruzzi carried out an extensive internal restructuring.
The main portal is the work of the master Jacopo Veneziano, who in 1465 made it in a flowery Gothic style, decorating it with motifs that show a strong affinity and adherence with the monumental entrance of the church of San Polo in Venice. 1790 in memory of the Indulgences granted on the occasion of the aggregation to the Roman Archbasilica of San Giovanni in Laterano.
Inside, on the wall of the facade just above the main portal is the equestrian monument of Marcantonio di Manzano, a Cividale leader who died heroically in 1617 during the siege of Gradisca. The sculpture, in lacquered wood, was commissioned by the Cividalese in 1621 and is the work of Girolamo Paleario. On the left of the counter-façade is the funeral monument of Patriarch Nicolò Donato, who re-established the patriarchal residence in Cividale from 1494 to 1497, the year of his death. The presbytery is one of the most representative spaces of the cathedral and had its final arrangement in the eighteenth century. The semi-underground crypt and the presbytery above it is a common solution in medieval basilicas, but unusual in Renaissance constructions. The wide staircase was built in 1721 and enlarged in 1775, using ancient marbles, cleverly hybridized with materials specially brought from Venice. The statues of Faith and Hope were placed there and on the upper balustrade the four statuettes of the Evangelists, distinguished by their respective symbols, works by Francesco Aloi.
The Cathedral houses works of considerable artistic and historical value:
- the wooden Crucifix, placed in the left aisle made in the thirteenth century;
- The Pala di Pellegrino II, one of the most important medieval masterpieces of Italian goldsmithing. Today placed on the main altar, it consists of one hundred twenty-three plates of embossed gilded silver.
- Vesperbild (Pietà) of the German school of the fifteenth century;
- "Stoning of St. Stephen" by Jacopo Palma the Younger of 1606;
- "Last Supper" by Jacopo Palma the Younger from 1606;
- "Annunciation" by Pomponio Amalteo of 1546;
- Frescoes in the sacristy by Giuseppe Diziani and Giuseppe Mattioni. (not visible in the movie)
