- The 2022 ISA World Junior Champion from Wahiawa invites us along for a tour of her deeply cultural upbringing - and does so speaking mostly Hawaiian. She takes us for a tour of the school she’s gone to for the last 12-years, plants a tree, rips a few turns, and gives us a gentle lesson on Hawaiian culture.

future of Hawaiian surfing is CROWDED
I know a part of the charm of The Pick Up is it's the North Shore show, but something similar throughout the year would be sick. Kinda how Thrasher throws Gary Rogers in front of a green screen every week to recap the skate world, I think something similar could translate really well for surfing. It is almost impossible to keep up with pro surfing now, so a weekly rundown of the best parts/waves of the week would be hectic.
edited to add: this young lady rips, sick style, and it's awesome that she's adamant about speaking the Hawaiian language. First peoples keeping their languages alive is so important for remembering cultures that have been changed beyond recognition.

SOTY?? When did surfing have a SOTY? Why is surfing biting skating more and more? From surfing being all airs now to stealing SOTY from Thrasher?? Surfing doesn’t need to copy skating, skating emerged from surfing. Just let each sport be its own vibe without trying to fully amalgamate the two until they’re just both mainstream lame. Only thing surfing could use is a fracturing of its incestuous, nepotistic, nature! That would be better and more original than copying skating.

@@mikeuptegrove Not really. Been skating for 25 years myself. You know skating was originally influenced from surfing... So who cares if skating is now influencing surfing... Granted I'm over the air-fests, but progression is inevitable.
The fact that Surfer Poll awards have been around for 60 years long before SOTY (skate one to be clear) chances are, influenced the skate industry to do something similar, but they tweaked it (coke got tweaked by pepsi, gobots got tweaked by transformers).
It's an acronym, relax.. Call it Surfer Of The Year without the abbreviated version then, and that to your argument would satisfy you then? and I see you make other comments on these vids so I can tell you're very bent out of shape over this topic. You made those arguments already; surfer’s poll and its date. Irrelevant. SOTY was something created by Jake Phelps. It’s not a poll nor has it ever been. This was just confirmed by Nyjah losing the SOTY bid despite the skate community’s say. So, first, it’s not a poll. So there’s the first part of your argument turned on its head. Second, I doubt Phelps gave two shits about surfing, nor even followed it. Sure call it, “Surfer of the Year”, but don’t call it SOTY (regardless it’s a bite). The acronym belongs to Thrasher and Jake. Period. Yes, I have a problem with skating and surfing becoming like Hollywood, whereby all creativity is gone and they just rip off everything from past creators anywhere they can. Surfing doesn’t need to be skating, it doesn’t need to try to gin up hits online by trying to use acronyms that have algorithmic success. It’s lame. I’m tired of these industries trying to turn the sports into amalgamated, and wholly consumeristic, parts of some woke, lame ass, whimsical pop culture for a generation of entitled kids who get a piece of it for nothing because the generation above me, while making us all wait our turn, sold the sport, the culture, and its rights of passage out to the highest juvenile bidders for a buck.
