    Please be careful when adopting a Shiba Inu! The breed is fantastic, but NOT for beginners. You are adopting a wolf in small body. I speak from experience as I have been the proud companion of a Shiba for 12 years. Yes, companion, not owner. Shiba's are much more like cats than like other dogs.

    • @AnimalWised

      @lindabroer8995 Pƙed 4 lety +11

      Lioness006 agreed. I’ve never known a Basenji though so I didn’t want to say anything. Some breeds have a bad rep. With the Shiba I know for a 100% sure that the breed is not for everyone. It’s also not something you can train out of them, no matter how well you socialize them. This is the breed you choose for so you must accept the breed quirks. I hate that the dogs are suffering because the wrong people buy them, thinking it’s an easy dog. It’s not. Put the effort into them and have the right attitude though and you get the most loyal companion you could ever imagine.

      @@lindabroer8995 Yeah. I've never met a Basenji, but from everything I've read about them, they aren't beginner dogs, probably bc they are such an ancient breed. But I have met a Shiba Inu and he was VERY wary of newcomers and very picky about who could touch him and where it was ok to pet him. As long as you followed HIS rules, you were fine. lol Smart, but very stubborn & strong-willed.

      I take my dog out at least 3 times a day and try to get her out to play at least 2 times a day, and she's still doing wonderfully. She even comes to the library and my counseling appointments with me.
      Many sites state that Goldens (and labs) can be great apartment dogs and WHY it works. Think about it, most service dogs are labs, goldens, or GSDs and they can live anywhere bc they are trained. I'd say a golden probably needs a good 20-30 minute walk (can be broken up into shorter walks throughout the day) and 30-60 min of play (again, can be broken up into shorter chunks of playtime). ALL dogs need a minimum of 1 hour of walks & play per day to stay healthy in body and mind. If you don't have at least that amount of time to spend with a dog, ANY dog breed, then you shouldn't have a dog.

    We have a White Fur Shiba Inu with a small red fur pattern. Her name is Momo, her mother bit half of her left ear off at birth, she’s such a good girl and is very active and is always super happy.
    The only reason I see why ppl would confuse a Shiba and an Akita is cuz their body form is 100% identical but the Akita is 2x bigger than a Shiba and has almost 2x the fur. Shiba is Japan’s small breed and Akita is Japan’s medium breed.

    The video mentioned that Pomeranians were always bred as companion dogs. That's not completely accurate. Originally Poms were 20 to 30 pound sled or herding dogs. They were bred down in size because Queen Elizabeth 1 preferred a smaller dog. So some poms may still retain a bit of working dog ethic.

    Few things that I need to mention..
    It is an apartment so the dog should be small and I can not handle unnecessary barking, everyone is quite busy in my house I myself am a student so the dog should be able to stay alone in the apartment for 4-5 hours..
    It shouldn't be active beyond control I can't take the dog out more than once a day..
    I know this is too much but I really want to have a dog can't decide which breed because of these conditions 😭

    When a chihuahua gets recommended as a good apt dog,you get a down vote from me. They are way to noisy and neurotic.As for Jack Russel's,we currently have a jr/lapsa apsa mix and he's a noisy stubborn little booger. While he does have his good points,and unfortunately we have become attached to him,unfortunately he's even managed to get me attached,he is noisy.He will sometimes look out the window and bark at all the neighbors. On the good side however is he did catch and kill a mouse.

      Chihuahuas can be very normal dogs but of course need adequate training. Their small size makes things scary for them so they need to be introduced to the world in a good way. Too many people just disregard training due to their size and treat them like spoiled babies. No wonder they get a bad stigma for being mean and neurotic.

      Jack Russells are VERY energetic, clever, and can be quite loud with their barking. They are rodent killers though. That's kind of their purpose. That also means they don't usually do well with smaller animals and don't do well with cats.

    I dont understand why chihuahuas and poms get such bad feed back as apartment dogs? They are the smallest breeds? . I have an apt and have had both pom and chihuahua they make excellent companions... all dogs bark. My neighbors have large dogs and they bark more than my chihuahua ever did. My chihuahua passed earlier this month just shy of 17 yrs old. She was the sweetest dog...She was nice to everyone and never barked.. They do live alot longer than most breeds so they definitely are a long term commitment
