Those binoculars are amazing: tiny birding bins with >1000x and stabilisation. Incredible…
They had some great tech in the 90's.
Movie magic
Goes well with gun magazines that never go empty.
@@ibtaba And bomb gliding for several minutes which delivers multiple detonations on impact.
And drug cartel bosses that greet each other like best friends. Ah the good ol days…
Even as a kid I loved how the sniper is all epic with face-paint, while Willem Dafoe has bright, bushy, blonde hair that literally GLOWS like the sun itself.
It's Willem Dafoe and that's his focal point
Yeah, but nobody looks for them,so lying prone in fatigues at a fair distance is more than enough.Actually the face paint is overkill.
Here in America, we call it HOLLYWOOD.
@@Panos-xo9rc im surprised there wasnt an overwatch for the property.
Awesome comment
I liked that how before impact, when they see the kids, both Dafoe and the sniper react. It shows that while they were trained in the art of combat and killing, they still had humanity.
By the way the snipers name is ding Chavez aka the protagonist in the rainbow six games and some books
At least they didn't feel anything it was so fast

Those binoculars are adorable, and it's good that the F-18 waited around for no reason in order to celebrate the explosion with a hard bank turn.

It's fiction
@@PeterParker-ff7ub So why not make the F-18 like, a robot jetplane with laser-gunz and stuff?
I guess that was supposed to be the high five at the end of mission accomplished.
@@chasingcats5147 He didn't have another. Also, if the target was missed, the people would be warned and scatter. .
For a point of reference, in the book, the bomb casing was compressed paper as not to create fragments, not metal. The idea was to make it look like a car bomb.
It's the same in the movie. There's a whole scene where Ryan tries to figure out who makes bombs out of cellulose.
Which is all bollocks anyway.
1. The bomb they showed was a GBU-12 Paveway (500lb). Like all other bombs in the Paveway series, they are encased in steel not cellulose. The US military have never used a cellulose encased laser guided bomb.
2 . The bad guys' chemical expert identifies the explosive as a 70/30 mix of HMX and TNT called Octol. While this is the correct formulation for Octol, the GBU-12 actually uses Tritonal, which is an 80/20 mix of TNT and powdered aluminium.
@@davidanderson4091
Obviously it went over your head
The bomb was specially made for that mission. It was encased in cellulose to hide the US military presence and make it look car bomb not an aerial bomb
Secondly the US military does not exclusively Tritonal or steel casings
For explosives
They use Tritonal, Composition H6 or PBXN-109
For casings, the M-82 bomb 4 different casings from steel to carbon fiber composite
The point was the bomb was created specifically for that mission
When the US military need bunker busters in Iraq in 91
The GBU-28 were designed, built and dropped in Iraq in 2 weeks
As the casting was cellulose and the explosive would likely eat through paper, the bomb had to be used as soon as possible so it something they can create as needed
@@davidanderson4091that's the point, in the book they don't want any possible links to the USA so they make a new bomb.
I just love that they introduced Clark and Ding from Rainbow six in this movie, it made the Tom Clancy stuff feel more real with reoccurring characters.
Clark and Ding were introduced in Clear And Present Danger. (The book.) They made quite a few appearances in later books, such as Sum of All Fears and Rainbow Six. (Rainbow Six was published a decade after Clear And Present Danger.
Clear and Present Danger might be my favorite Clancy book, though it might compete with HFRO...
The first real John Clark book was Without Remorse. They're all good reads...
Clark is actually in Clancy's first book Without Remorse, IF you read them in chronological order.
Unfortunately this characters don't appear in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands, despite the theme is around fighting the cartel.
@@TXH1138Without Remorse was published August 11, 1993 where as his first novel The Hunt for Red October was published October 1, 1984 but you are correct as chronologically, Without Remorse would be the first story in the Jack Ryan/John Clark universe.
Love this movie. I love that Jack Ryan is literally just some office guy who happens to have balls.
Jack wasn't just some office guy. If you saw the first movie Patriot Games, it's revealed that Jack had, and it's been a long time since I watched it, but I believe he had Special Forces training, which means he was similar to Dafoe's character, as far as capability.
Quick confession, never read the novels, only saw the films long ago, so my memory is a little hazy.
@@thecowboy9698in the films he was in the naval academy but suffered a massive back injury after a helicopter crash in training, but completed his training from the hospital. One member of the target identifying team is correctly camouflaged and then there’s Defoe’s shining blond hair standing out, clearly giving away their position.

This scene is so damn iconic!
0:55 opera glasses with the magnification of a stellar observatory and the field of view of a normal lens. And not to forget the visible (!) red laser to mark the target. BTW: Why isn't Willem Dafoe in need of camouflage? I love Hollywood!
The laser is only visible through the viewfinder on the device.
Yeah, the baddies could see Defoe's highlights from mikes away.

Yeah. I had a pair of those binocs when I was a kid. Thought they’d be cool compact spy stuff but we’re worthless. Surprised they sprayed them OD.
The hair thing I figured is 1. Hollywood 2. Maybe they were so far away it didn’t matter. 3. These guys had been staking it out and he had just show up to confirm right place and guys and give the go ahead being it wasn’t really legit.

Those bomb are so good that they initiate multiple blast points and even include some phosphorous.
If only Hollywood could make them for the military.
Whose military?
In the novel, the bomb's casing was made of cellulose so that there wasn't any identifying shrapnel at the impact site. It made it look like it was a truck bomb.
@@derekdoubleut Nope, it was aimed at the truck bed in the book.
In the book it was a large JDAM style munition but I think also there was something special about it, it's been a few decades since I read the book, so from memory Clancy hypothesized a special munition where its casing was paper leaving no trace and an appearance of a car bomb detonation providing plausible deniability.
@@mikedowd6015 Yea, you beat me to it, I was trying to recall the details.

One of those new stealth bombs you don't see until they're dropped.
A bomb has all the forward momentum of the plane it was dropped from what are you going to do if you see it run? Lol
"Circular error probability" 2:37 is a statistical measure of a bomb group's radius of error of impact on the target. Precision guided weapons are not subject to such a normal distribution.
Yes they do, it's just very small.
@@donaldasayers You're right, of course. I was simplifying too much.

Be nice if the F18 actually had ordnance.
You know I‘m somewhat of a spec op myself.
Great film better book
Such a shame the Tom Clancy books could have been a new spy film series like James bond!
Unfortunately the best one, CARDINAL OF THE KREMLIN, was obsolete by the time they were ready to adapt it
Oh not really his book suck and so does he m*********** ain't never been in combat
There were many great stories and 5 have been turned into major feature films starting with Hunt for Red October. They screwed up Sum of All Fears changing the terrorist cause in a profound way discarding the prevailing political climate and Clancy's prescience. The Hollywood agenda continued with shadow recruit. The core problem is you can't trust a franchise to woke sell-outs who despise and subvert the source material. They want the paycheck, they have no passion for telling the story especially the way Clancy portrayed the protagonists.
Defence on your point of view. Personally , The Jack Ryan movies for me is way better than all the James Bond Film in the last 40 years with the exception of The Living Daylights. I've always thought Dalton was an awesome Bond and coulda been the perfect Ryan.
If they hire Harrisson Ford much early then we could still have more TC movies. This actually the sequel to Patriot Games
The binoculars are what made me watch it. Hahaha.
Tight tight tight yeah!
Sweet clip
The left MFD on the F/A-18 clearly shows the plane is off. Canopy open, flaps and ailerons both off, boarding ladder extended. Low hydraulic pressure in both systems. Ins not aligned. It's even showing an error on the battery switch, meaning it was probably on external power for the shot.
Well, now I just can’t enjoy the film at all.

The right MFD also shows weapons management being in SAFE mode. Left MFD shows two numbers: one being too low (left #) to be airspeed at which the aircraft is flying, and right one being at angel 3 that is too low altitude for it to be flying above the cloud. The bomb is seen spinning, they do not spin as it throws off the guidance, it has to track the laser spot and guide itself onto it, much more difficult to do if the bomb spins.
