ASMR // NAS Build // 100TB's!!!

  • After a long four-month process of planning and executing, I finally got my NAS up and working. This is definitely something out of the ordinary for me to post, but it was a fun project, and I hope to make similar content in the future, maybe with less ASMR and more informational value. If you enjoyed this video, a simple like and share is greatly appreciated.
    The Goal:
    My main goal with this project was to establish a better way of storing my 20+ TB's of photos and videos that I have sitting on multiple HDDs and multiple Samsung T7 2TB drives. Along with that, I wanted to be able to walk around my house and edit and access all my footage and files from within my home network. The added benefit of being able to edit on the move and not being stuck down to my desktop was also a significant plus. The final cherry on top was adding the ability to access all my files and create my own self-hosted Google Drive equivalent for all my past, present, and future projects. This was another headache and fun learning experience.
    Pre-Built vs (Synology, QNAP)
    When it comes to pre-built solutions like Synology and QNAP, the big thing I dislike about them is that you're paying so much for a dual-core or Intel Pentium CPU or atom CPU on some! Most Synology builds don't offer anything higher than a 1Gbps Ethernet connection, which is absurd when you're paying $750 for a shell body. Nowadays, 10G or at least 2.5G Ethernet connections should be a minimum, given how affordable these solutions are. While the software on pre-built solutions is very simple to use, it is also very limiting. Putting in a little more leg work allowed me to create multiple VM machines to create my home server, run a Minecraft server, and if I am interested in the future, I could start setting up a Plex server for all my media and Linux ISOs.
    You can find a list of the parts and stuff I used below
    pcpartpicker.com/b/xxxcCJ
    Full step by step breakdown:
    www.minicmedia.com/labs/creat...
    Build Notes:
    -Note 1: When you see me connect the 3 SATA cables in the back, I actually connected 2 more off-camera, just because I had forgotten to bring those cables from my home office the day of the build.
    -Note 2: I also went back off-camera and did a little bit more cable management to the power cables.
    -Note 3: During the building of the hard drives, I only used two of the three mount points for the HDD, but off-camera, I went back and re-seated them.

    Good video, only thing I have to say is #1 18x5 + 1 = 91 and #2 to anyone that is going to be building a computer of any kind, put it together outside the case and fire it up before putting it in the case, so you know things work properly before committing to all the mounting and cable management

      100% Correct, The title was more of a click bait as its sounds more interesting when you hear 100. Since this was for a video i also skipped a lot of check process that i normally do since i was more concern on getting the beautiful shot. I hope to keep improving and create more similar stuff. Maybe less asmr and more instructional. Where i could possibly talk more about why im doing things and how to properly do it your self. CZcams has taught me so much and i want to return the favor with my own twist.

      What made it worse is, as i was cutting i was looking at the external monitor to use as reference. Instead of looking at what i was cutting.

    Great video! I only saw you connect 3 SATA cables. The motherboard comes with 4 SATA connectors. How are you connecting the 5th HDD to the motherboard?

    • @MinicMedia
      @MinicMedia  Před 11 měsíci

      Correct. In the description of the video i explained that. On the build day i did not bring the additional 2 sata cables so i wasnt able to record me film the connection process. Although it is the same as the other 3 connections. The mobo has 4 free sata ports and the nvme to sata converter that i bought gave me 2 additional sata ports. It can be seen at the 14:00 Time mark.

    warranty voided for not using right angle sata cables where they plug into the back panel near the fan

    • @MinicMedia
      @MinicMedia  Před rokem

      I believe that was only a issue on the n1 case. But you could be correct. I know that upon building it the right angle seemed to cause a lot of strain compared to flat ones.

    • @RobertPendell
      @RobertPendell Před rokem +1

      @@MinicMedia It's in the documentation that they won't warranty it unless you are using right angle connectors for your SATA cables. N2 model does appear to have more space and isn't quite as bad as the N1 but I'd rather not risk it.

  • @npf21
    @npf21 Před 9 měsíci +1

    would you go for the N3 instead of the N2 case now its out? and if you'd go the N3 what board would you use?
    I'm thinking down the road I'm going to have this server for storage for the whole family and the extra 8 bays would be handy but the motherboard i wouldn't know what to use

    • @MinicMedia
      @MinicMedia  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I was thinking about it but i ended up building another server, With a fractal Node 804. Only reason being that the fractal case lets me use atx power supply vs the N3 Which still needs a sfx power supply.

    • @MinicMedia
      @MinicMedia  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Also i can use a full size gpu on the fractal case vs the N3

    • @npf21
      @npf21 Před 9 měsíci

      @@MinicMedia yeah I’m the same route avoiding the N3 due to the size constraints and I would like to put a full sized gpu. I’ve got the space for a tower and it’s nice to have that flexibility for later on. I’ll most likely put a smaller RPi inside to control home assistant and other zigbee switches down the road for lower power consumption tasks and also to lower disk usage down the road.

      Also I’m wanting to get back into video editing and coding some graphical LLMs so having a gpu fits the bill

    Hi there, great video. What OS are you running? TrueNAS, Unraid, DSM? Got any benchmarks?

    • @MinicMedia
      @MinicMedia  Před 8 měsíci +1

      This is running on unraid.
      As far as benchmarks, what are you looking for?

    • @carloslema5400
      @carloslema5400 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Thank you. File transfer speed over Ethernet & disk IO (I assume RAID5 + M2 for OS and containers) - for example moving those 20TB of photos & videos how long did it take? Looking to build something like your setup to ditch my Asustor NAS. Thanks for sharing, cool cars btw, keep up the great work!

    • @MinicMedia
      @MinicMedia  Před 8 měsíci +1

      @carloslema5400 unraid is in unraid as is not a raid configuration. It's parity driven. I/O Speeds are dependent on the speed of the hdd or my cache drive. But are limits to my networking speeds at the moment.
      I'm using my 2tb m.2 as cache, and I have one disk in parity mode.
      Hdd write and read speeds are about 250mbps
      The m.2 is limited by my network card. Which is 2.5gb.
      I have been looking to upgrade to a 10gb network card, but that means I also have to upgrade my network switch. The current one I own is a 5 port 2.5gb network switch.

    • @MinicMedia
      @MinicMedia  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Doing the math on 20tbs, it should take me 22hrs 13 min + or - 30min to move 20tbs of data. But again, that is all up to your own hdd speeds.
      I hope this wasn't all too confusing. If you have any questions, lmk .

    8:20. Did you need all those Molex and SATA psu cables? This case has that backplane which which powers the drives off one Molex connector.

    • @htwingnut
      @htwingnut Před 10 měsíci +2

      Agreed. You only need 24-pin, 8-pin (or 4-pin) CPU, and two molex.

    18:14 Shouldnt the fan be intake instead of outake?

    • @MinicMedia
      @MinicMedia  Před 9 měsíci

      Ideally no, Since you want the hard drives sitting in the front to receive the first input of cold air (Which you can see at 18:58). As the air goes through the system its heated up and released in the back, having the air enter the back and get heated up by the system and then arrive to the hard drives wouldn't be great. I hope this answer your question.

    What did u hook up to the sata power cables?

    • @MinicMedia
      @MinicMedia  Před 10 měsíci

      The back of this case has a green pcb board that allows you to connect the sata ports to it which then connect to the power supply for power.
