  • Firefox is my favorite web browser and one of the main reasons for that is its great Bookmarks system. Firefox Bookmarks are one of the best bookmarks systems of any browsers and there is a Secret Hidden Feature that makes it the best, you create your own Custom Search inside of a bookmark.
    Once you start using Firefox's Bookmarks plus the Multi-Account Containers feature, you will wonder why you ever bothered using any other browser.

    I love Firefox but I do wish they added a vertical tab browser akin to their bookmark sidebar browser. Their current setup has something similar but it gets hidden after you select a tab, forcing you to reopen it. Ergo they should add tabs to the bookmark sidebar.

      @michael_tunnell  Před 3 lety +1

      You didn't come across as salty at all, I was just curious why built in vs extension. Discoverability would be much better built in but that's all I can think of. Container Tabs is via an extension so I feel like Firefox is more likely to make stuff like that than built in but built in stuff would be nice

    • @samuelitooooo
      @samuelitooooo Před 2 lety +2

      This is a built-in option in Vivaldi and if you choose it, it removes the top bar so you don't have a duplicate row of open tabs taking up screen space. Wish Firefox would do the same, even if not by default.
      It's really cool how Firefox has a Sidebar as sort of its own open platform but I think more could be done with it.
      EDIT: Why built-in? I think I'd rather Mozilla themselves handle the UI - disabling the top row of tabs - than an extension. 😅

    As a long time user of Firefox I have been using keywords forever. Knowing the search function just added another level to why I continue to use this amazing browser. There have been some GUI issues with Firefox, like the spacing problem for bookmarks in the recent versions, but I have figured out a way to restore the compact view which I want to keep.
    I found this video to be really helpful and will be implementing this immediately.
    I do have an issue as to when you add a new bookmark (with the star icon) that the keyword field is not present in the popup. So if you want to add a keyword you have to go and edit the bookmark manually.... which is a pain to find if you have many bookmarks. Why can't they just have that field present?
    Speaking of many bookmarks I do have one request which you might be able to answer. How would I be able to convert all my bookmarks to a local web page (not cloud) so when I startup Firefox I see all my categorized bookmarks all on one web page? Basically similar to the Bookmark toolbar but in a web page.... with categories that you can drop down to choose the link you want.
    I would set my Firefox default homepage to this local bookmarks page.
    Even if I could find an app to import my bookmarks from Firefox to create a local web page that would work to. This could be on the cusp of getting into web page development which I don't have much experience in but if there was a drag and drop app utility available I would certainly be interested. I haven't tried messing around with anything yet to accomplish this but it is something I have always wanted to do. In the back of my mind I'm maybe thinking the rabbit hole is too deep.

      I’m glad this video was useful to you, thanks for watching and sharing feedback. The keyword field not being there by default is pretty dumb and Firefox has never made it clear that the function is there. As for the web page thing. Open the bookmarks manager and export to HTML. This will essentially do what you want but not with a drop down system just a converting to a web page part.

      on a computer, vertical space is the more precious space so I would recommend not doing this but there might be an extension for it. I would search for multiple rows in the addon page. you can try changing the appearance mode in the Customize Toolbar section to "Compact" but that affects other things as well. Otherwise I dont think so, maybe with a theme plugin perhaps. Right click the toolbar and choose the Customize option this will open a new tab with a menu box and a big gallery of options. From here you just drag and drop the icons where you want them to be and the menu at the top right is used for overflow. This lets you have quick access to stuff but hides on the main toolbar interface.

    Hmmm the custom search feature at the beginning of the video exists on chrome as well...
    Firefox's strength at the moment IMHO is the fact that it uses a different rendering engine compared to every other browser out there.
    Sadly I don't always agree with how the foundation handles its products (e.g. The integration of gpg encryption in thunderbird was a sh*tshow since day 1).

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  Před 3 lety

      Chrome does not have custom search in bookmarks. It has custom search engines in the settings and so does Firefox . . . but this is a very different thing because this makes it easily migrated and synced between devices. Last I check Chrome's sync doesn't include search engines. Though if it does, I can sync mine in Firefox without ever having to use any of the syncing services if I don't want to.
      I do agree Firefox's own engine is important but this is not the same as what Chrome has for searches

    • @bufordmaddogtannen
      @bufordmaddogtannen Před 3 lety

      @@michael_tunnell I was referring to your statement "now you have a search function for CZcams directly built into your browser". You can do the same in chrome and come up with your custom search functions as well. The way you presented the feature makes it sound like it's a Firefox thing, when it's common to both browsers.
      Then yes, Firefox blows chrome out of the water when it comes to the bookmark manager.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  Před 3 lety

      Well I should have probably worded it differently, that's fair to say because it's not just a custom search function thing. You can apply this to literally any URL so even if a website doesn't have a search function you could add that variable to it for all sorts of things. I should have probably worded it more related to that as it's much more powerful than simply a custom search. Oh well, live and learn. :)
      Thanks for pointing that out though, I will make note of it for the future.

      Last I checked, it didn’t have bookmark keyword search feature. Even if it does now it doesn’t have Container Tabs which is my favorite feature of Firefox, I made a video about that feature too here on this channel.
      Btw Edge uses a ton of memory because it’s based on Google’s Chrome and every browser based on chromium is pretty bloated when it comes to memory usage

    • @sturmx96
      @sturmx96 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@michael_tunnell No, edge has bookmarks search feature, they just call it favorites. They implemented the keyword search much better, as you can manage these search engines in settings compared to firefox way where you have to download the certain plugin for youtube search or any other one. The method you showed seems like a workaround rather than an official one also it makes you create additional bookmarks that you might not need just for the sake of search feature.
      Also, edge recently released its own container tabs which is called workspaces where you can even share them with your colleagues and manage tabs together. What I miss in edge is tabs grouping, sure there are some third party extensions in firefox for that matter but none of them are that convenient and nice looking.
      There are some drawbacks but you can live with them and I still think it's a nice browser especially performance wise.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Firefox also has the search function system in settings like every browser does. The bookmarks option is an additional feature. In Firefox you can also add a search specific box to the toolbar that does only search and easily switched the engine.
      I don’t know about the workspaces thing but I’ll check it out to learn more.
      The extension Simple Tab Groups works really well in my opinion. The built in grouping system from old Firefox was much better and it’s a shame it’s gone but this extension works well and integrates with Container Tabs

      @michael_tunnell  Před 4 měsíci

      With that attitude, you’re right, you won’t. In fact your perspective of geeks is not only flawed, it’s completely broken. We don’t want to make things take a dozen steps but we are okay with doing a dozen steps once to setup a better and faster way.
      Non-geeks type CZcams into the address bar (which searches Google), then they click the link, then they click the search box, then they type their search, and finally they click the search icon. Whereas a geek like me would set this up which takes a tiny amount of additional effort and then every time I search CZcams I just type “y examplesearch” and press enter. That’s 10 times faster than the non-geek way. If I don’t want to search and just want to go to CZcams then I just type y and press enter, that’s it.
      Geeks are people who are willing to put in slightly more effort up front to get a faster and easier solution to do every time after that. It’s up to you now to try it out or just keep using the slower method that actually takes many many more steps. This makes up for the amount of steps up front in just 5 uses but if you prefer the slower way then enjoy
