From '94-98', I was obsessed with this guy and his movies. Watched those films so many times and can still quote them endlessly. His star may have faded now, but being in a theater at 13 years old when "Liar, Liar" came out, with a sold out crowd that was tearing the roof off from laughing so hard is one of those theatrical experiences I will always cherish.

One thing I always loved about how Carry did Ace is 95% of the time he was wacky and high on energy, which made the few times he slowed down to deliver a dramatic moment shine all the brighter.
I'll never forget those two scenes: The first where he reads the newspaper article in the asylum storage and his voice goes all low and serious. And the second when he makes the call after visiting the Finkle family house "I'm in psychoville and FInkle's the mayor."

Yeah, but what a year for Jim Carrey in 1994. I think 1994 through 1997, at least in the early to mid 1990s, were the best years for Jim Carrey, at least that’s my opinion. After LIAR LIAR, I sorta lost interest in Jim Carrey’s movies. I tried to watch but I couldn’t get into THE TRUMAN SHOW. I admit MAN ON THE MOON was interesting. And I definitely like ME, MYSELF, AND IRENE, as well as BRUCE ALMIGHTY. But the other films I couldn’t get into. Maybe I wanted him to act as those silly, quirky characters like he had before. But I know he wanted to venture and expand his acting talents, and probably most of all he didn’t want to be typecast as that particular kind of character. I remember really wanting to watch THE NUMBER 23 when it was advertised. But for some reason I hadn’t. Perhaps because I heard reviews that it wasn’t good. I still haven’t watched DUMB AND DUMBER TO.... Yes, he returned to the character of Lloyd Christmas. But for me I think it was 20 years too late. Had he did that one 10 years earlier(in 2004), then yeah, I definitely would have watched that one. I don’t know.... Perhaps one day I will see that movie.

What a banner year Jim Carrey had in 1994! *Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,* *The Mask,* and *Dumb & Dumber* came out in quick succession and all were huge hits. In fact, *Dumb & Dumber* was the sixth highest-grossing film of the year, *The Mask* was #9, and *Ace Ventura* was #17. So, he had two movies in the Top 10 and three in the Top 20. And to think he had been relatively unknown the previous year.

Bonus fact: The movie was at one point gonna be conceived as the first Ernest P. Worrell movie. As the writer of most of the Ernest movies, Coke Sams said many original scripts all over Hollywood would be given to him and he would re-write them as Ernest movies instead. This was how Ernest Saves Christmas got made as the script was some original movie about Santa retiring, and the original writer of the script was told Disney were making his story into an Ernest one. Of course, Sams would pass on it, and we ended up with Ernest Goes to Camp (1987) instead.
