- This is a riveting 17 minute address by the late legendary radio news commentator Paul Harvey. It was recorded on March 8, 2003 at the R&R Talk Radio Seminar. It was his last speech to the radio industry .

The saddest thing, there are generations of recent past and future generations, who will never know his voice; his greatness. Those who remember him every day at noon, are very fortunate. He was one of a kind!
I wish they would rebroadcast his entire show so the current young generations and future generations could hear a man who stood by his belief and believed in respect for others as well as himself. I found some of his recordings on audible and Apple. So many would benefit from his words. ❤

I grew up listening to his baritone voice describing with great detail every story he told, his daily monologs were spell binding learning to use your imagination in every story he told. A man of great words, and a true American hero of the literary word. RIP, Paul you are dearly missed.

We lost a true legend and a very loving guy
I began at 7 years old, working in my Dad's machine shop simply sweeping and cleaning his machines. Metal lathes, mills, drill presses, bandsaws and grinders would interfere with the clear reception. If memory serves me right, Mr. Harvey's noon show was at 12:30. We broke for lunch at noon, but would not turn on a single machine until we heard the conclusion of the show. Then later in the afternoon, the noisy shop became quiet as a church as we listened to "The Rest of the Story".
I worked in that shop until I graduated at 18. I had learned to turn the material on the lathe without fear. I had learned to weld and sweat in that Texas summer heat. But the staple of my youth, the determining compass of my rearing, was Mr. Paul Harvey. He could make me laugh, tear up and swell with pride as he revealed stories of Americans that I thought could be my neighbors. He was a master at such a high level it left him without peers. But millions of fans.
I think back to a simpler time when my biggest concern was getting better grades in school and finishing work in time to visit friends. Mr. Harvey was the cement that made me relate to my Dad.
Our generation (born after 1955) are the most blessed in the history of the world. Most of us have never been in war, seen poverty that was so deep, the dust from abandoned and neglected farms would get caught in a wind storm and blind the eyes.
Yet we saw a President killed when we were in 2nd grade. We saw the Viet Nam war escalate. We saw our moms leave home and go to work. We saw the President's brother killed on TV. We saw political riots unlike we had ever seen in America. We saw a man walk on the moon. Later we saw a President resign from office and when we graduated, the Viet Nam war was over and another. We had it good then and our entire lives. If anyone born in 1956 had problems that kept them from the abundance of wealth and privilege, it is likely something they did wrong.
I'm thankful that through all those historical moments that Mr. Harvey chose to be a voice of reason.

Reminds me of times I would look forward to hearing his versions of the news ; he was well put to geather sort of man ! He had his ways of telling the pro and cons ! Oh how he could open up your mind ! Now days reporter or fake news reporter stand way at the bottom of well in this case they can't compete ; they are really out of his league ! ( guess once in a life time we run in people of great character which is unmeasurable .) had given me vision ! Especially for the Lord
As an 83 year old man I have come to realize how LUCKY I am to have grown up listening to people like Paul Harvey, NOT on TV but on the radio! Some of what he talked about rubbed off on me and made me what I am today.

When overseas serving in the military, it was Paul Harvey's voice each day on Armed Forces radio that connected us to home more than any other thing. Thank you Mr. Harvey.

My world would stop every weekday at 12:00 just to listen to this man for many many years as I was emulating my father's routine when I was younger I too became gleefully hooked for what seemed like a lifetime. I sure do miss the wonder that was Paul Harvey.
Like clockwork I would listen to him in my car having lunch at work I was blessed to Russian and had the opportunity to hear his news each and every day rest in peace paul.
I started listening to Paul in 1965. I was 20 years old and tried to never miss one of his shows. He will never be replaced. RIP sir.
As a kid I used to think he was boring and would make fun of him. Now as a grown man I realize just how stupid I was when I was a kid.

God made one man to tell the world stories that where real and inspiring, a voice that glued your ears to the radio and listened with intensity. God has him standing at his right side, ready to tell us more stories of truth and wonder. Mr. Harvey is missed by millions.

I learned from listening to this man through the years. The Rest of the Story was my favorite.
I drove for Village Cab in Oak Park, Il. part time in the mid 1960's while I was in flight school. It was my privilege to drive Mr. Harvey to O'Hare on 2 separate occasions. He was a gracious, kind man! He liked to ask questions and he was a good listener. He could have had a limousine but didn't mind my taxi. He was a good tipper, but didn't overdo it. That's all I remember.
Out of sight out of mind. I had forgotten about Paul over the past few years. We all have busy lives after all. I just stumbled across this video and was reminded of what a pure joy he was to listen to and what a national treasure he was. Rest in Peace Mr. Harvey and Thank You.

I always had to make sure I was able to listen to him. As most of us thirsted for was his "Rest of the Story" segment which I under was written by Paul Jr..

In my opinion, there's no other Commentator that could fill this man's shoes. Paul Harvey, I've listened to him and admired his style since I was 12 years old, I'm 70 now.
Oh, I would love to hear Paul Harvey once again say “Hello Americans”. We lost a treasure when he passed. We lost someone who could captivate his listening audience with a story and the “Rest of the Story”. The tenor of his voice can never be forgotten, his civility and decency can never be discounted. He is the prime example of how radio should be today, yet those in the industry have seem to forgotten what it is all about, As Paul would say, “Good Day”.

He was our day's Poor Richard's Daily Diary. I was sooo blessed to have had him, especially in my formative years. My early bosses, co-workers, 'outside' sub-contractors and I, all listened to his broadcasts every single day for decades while building custom homes. After his noon-time airing, all was right with the world - at least for the rest of the day.
I agree, but it won't work now...with automated radio stations, and fancy tuners people don't want to hear some one like Paul Harvey..when a station airs something like that people just switch stations with a push of button. I grew up with Paul Harvey...I would not have wanted to change the station when he came on, but it would have taken a while to tune in a new station if I had.

At 76, the negative news depresses more than inspires a person to think so
I'm a 38 year young, father of 4. My mom, who is 75, raised me by herself. I remember listening to Mr. Harvey every time we were in the car. I learned so much from his factual stories, over the years. When I learned of his passing, I was heart broken. The world lost a great great man that day. May he forever rest in peace. As a speech, Drama and Broadcast student at LSU and admittedly rank amateur in 1956 at a radio station in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I was assigned to assist Mr Harvey as he readied his daily ABC broadcast. I got there at about 6 am and he had already been there at least a couple of hours. What a great honor! I spent most of my time watching in awe and learning... he was all work and focus. I don't remember his even asking me to at least get him some water or paper or dial the phone. Complete self sufficiency! So, I got a dollar an hour to just be there...just in case. I treasure that memory and his kindness in Chicago when I was free-lancing there. It took me from that day to 1968 to finally make it to the ABC FM Network as newscaster and general assignments reporter for it and the other three radio networks of American Broadcasting. He was one of the greats who inspired be to continue my career in broadcasting and there I was, working at the same network with PAUL HARVEY! But never again as an "assistant" again. Colleague, yes...certainly but more a FAN of one of the great "originals" who will never be duplicated no matter how many copy or try to imitate or replace him!

I remember back in the 1960's when I was a teenager working for some of the older folks in the neighborhood.
One lady had a brother and his family visited regularly. Along about noon the old fellow would say he was going to go sit in the car because it was time for the Paul Harvey broadcast.
I first heard Paul Harvey sitting in a Barber's chair 66 years ago, age 10 (1952) and was captivated by his wizardry with words; and remained so the rest of his life. Whenever possible I would arrange my schedule around his broadcasts. ....so missed!
I remember being a kid in grade school, my dad was a carpenter, and if he was working in the area he would join me for lunch, as us young kids were allowed to come home to eat lunch. The first thing he would do when he walked in the door, would be to put on the radio and listen to Paul Harvey. In fact I don't thing he ever missed a Paul Harvey radio show. Years later I found myself listening to him on his daily radio shows, and now I realize how important of an influence he had on my life. He was the definition of class. His Saturday broacasts hooked me at 14 years old, on a little 250 watt local AM station, and I sure do miss him.
My mother would tune him in on our AM station our of Seattle and I loved listening to him as well. Somehow the sound of the AM broadcast added to his magic.

I grew up listening to him around the lunch table on my dad's big black radio. He had that voice that held your attention...whether you were a child or adult. How we need his voice today.
My grandfather never missed a Paul Harvey's broadcast. I used to hate when he'd move the dial from my 80's top 40 pop rock to Harvey. Only later in life did I truly appreciate it. This speech is pure gold! "If life were logical, its men who would ride side saddle"

Listen to "If i were the Devil"....still spot on 70 years later...
On "If I were the Devil", he could of included, "If I wanted to do away with Godly standards, at all levels I would weaken the Church, by convincing folks they could make more money and it would be more 'convenient' to do away with Blue Laws and have businesses open all week, to include Sunday.
Then those who are not working, would also have something to get them away from Church. Thus goes the Church, thus goes the Nation!"
I grew up with his voice on the radio...I'll be 57 in a few days and I am still in awe of his stories and the truths behind them.
He was right, he will live on forever in the hearts and minds of those that care to listen. He has touched every one of us through our imaginations. Thank God for his time here in our country and thank you to whoever posts his broadcasts to keep his charcter prevolent.

I remember going to work with my dad and we would always stop and get lunch and listen to Mr. Harvey.
When possible in the Navy I'd catch him on the radio we had in the galley ( kitchen)
I drove long haul and wasn't able to pass that radio lunch time on to my son... but 99% of the time was able to find him on the radio to hear the lunch time news even if it was rolling down the road. ... Thank you Sir and thank you for

Many are the times I would notice someone arriving home in their car, or at the supermarket, park, then not get out of their vehicle for a few minutes. They appeared to just sit there. When I learned that they were finishing a Paul Harvey broadcast, I began to do the same thing.
He was wise, talented, and good for our country.
Now I am pleased to say that Mike Rowe is doing a similar thing. It is called THAT'S THE WAY I HEARD IT. I am glad he is doing this. I don't do much online but I do catch Mike on You Tube.
Mike is not trying to be a Paul Harvey. They each have their own styles. But I appreciate that he is continuing a great tradition.

He was an Icon in news entertainment. First introduced to his show I was 16 years of age working building houses and dad and uncle would listen to him religiously on the Am Radio every day at lunch. Even as a young kid I was entertained by his stories and narratives.
He was always a voice of reason for the American People.

As a kid, i always listened to Paul Harvey every morning when my dad took me to school. All the news and stories he told were so fascinating to me. Even when he did advertisements for a company, to me it would seem he would make that company so trustworthy to buy from. RIP Paul. Greatly missed.

I miss hearing Paul say in the morning, “and now, the rest of the story”! That was always something we looked forward to in the 80s and 90s. He was our entertainment as we were riding or sitting at home or wherever.
Bravo! Humility in even an almost mystical individual seems nearly unheard of these days. We have lost so much.

What a truly amazing man! If only more people don’t aspire to be like Paul Harvey. I remember so many times driving in my car listening to “The Rest of the Story” and if I arrived at my destination before he finished his broadcast I parked and sat, listening to that wondrously expressive voice, ears pricked, waiting to hear those words that always left me with something to ponder, “And now, (Pause intended). You know, the rest of the story”. Thank you Mr. Harvey for painting those pictures in my mind, for making me, smile and laugh and sometimes cry. You are my hero.❤️✝️🇺🇸

Hi Peggy, Yep. I too would sit in the car waiting for his broadcasts to end. There was no way you could turn off the radio and get out of your car in the middle of his, "the rest of the story" stories!
So glad I had the pleasure to tune into his radio show the last few years of his life. As a young man I learned alot from his "rest of the stories." A true gentleman and class act that we may never see the likes of again.
i too am standing up and clapping . what a positive and everlasting influence this man has had on me and my family members. what a great platform we have in you tube. history and memories are preserved and at our finger tips. paul would be impressed....great post !
