  • From the launch of the Mk1 Golf, Volkswagen had an instant success on their hands. VW refined the model with the launch of the Mk2 Golf, which retained the key elements of what made the Golf so special. During this time the GTI 16v was introduced, producing 139bhp and also homologation specials such as the G60 Rallye Syncro and 16v G60 Limited.
    The Mk3 arrived with some controversy, due to strict safety regulations in place, making it heavy, but VW countered this with the superb 2.8 VR6 engine. The Mk4 arrived with similar criticism, but the R32 4motion was the exception to the rule.
    The Mk5 is well renowned as a return to form for the VW Golf GTI.
    The Mk6, essentially a facelifted Mk5 carried on the success. The Mk7 Golf is a huge success, with the GTI being a driver's car, whilst the Mk7R is a highly tunable 2.0 turbo 4 wheel drive rocket.
    With the Mk8 being the last of the production Volkswagen Golfs, can VW finish the model on a high?
    Here we go through the marques and determine which we think is the Greatest Golf. Which is your favourite Golf?

    Very good video
    Having driven the golf for the past 20 years and having every golf except the mk6 I am saden to hear of the end of production of the golf
    I think the mk2 is the greatest of all time
    I actually have 4 mk2 an 89 a 90 a 91 gti 8valve and a 92 Pasadena
    Thanks very much for the video

      Very kind words. That's greatly appreciated.
      We.of course love the Mk2 ourselves (unsurprisingly) but it was great to see all of the models lined up (bar the mk6 and mk8). And yes, it is a shame about the demise of the Golf, but it seems VW are focusing all their attention on the ID range.

    My favorite will always be the Mk2 because I've had 3 of them. I do have a soft spot for a mk5. The mk7 really does look mean and VW got it bang on with the mk7. Shame the mk8 made it all go to pot really.

    Mk2 16v for the emotional connection. Our Mk3 TDI (90bhp), of its time, for comfort, and was the car that just.... kept.... going. My current 7.5 GTI does tick an awful lot of boxes though, and is the car I just want to make excuses/reasons to go out in (Bit like Bob Flavin in his review of the Clubsport 40).

    • @golfmk2
      @golfmk2  Před 9 měsíci +3

      Those are some great examples. Obviously the Mk2 GTI 16v is a firm favourite here, but I buck the trend a bit for not hating on Mk3s. My dad also had a Mk3 GL TDI in flash red. I remember the perceived step up in quality from the Mk2 Jetta he had previously and being blown away by the performance of it!

    Mk4 R32. Only golf to come with a vr6 attached to a manual transmission with awd. The mk5 R32 didn’t have a manual transmission option and the previous mk3 didn’t have an awd option. In my opinion the best engine VW has ever put in a production vehicle is the vr6 and attaching that to something with awd just makes sense. I know from factory they didn’t make a lot of power but they sound amazing and give the car character.

    • @golfmk2
      @golfmk2  Před 6 měsíci

      In the UK the Mk5 did come with a manual option, and is often preferred over the DSG due to reliability concerns with the latter. But the VR6 (R32) is an absolute peach of an engine. The Mk4 is supposedly more raw and considered a drivers car, compared to the Mk5. Would you agree?

      I'd say you have good taste! The mk5 does look good and is renowned as a return to form for the GTI. The 7.5 is probably the best of the modern Golfs. 👌

    Having a tuned mk2 16v I am too a little biased but frankly there is neither a best one or worst one in my eyes as I think they're all exceptional for their time and any of them can be made ones own or enjoyed just as is in originality.

  • @battleheights

    I've had a mk1, mk2 and mk4 GTI. Out of the three I felt the safest in the mk2, but I did love the power of the mk4. I also loved the build quality of the mk2.. It did not seem to be as good in the mk4

    • @golfmk2
      @golfmk2  Před 6 měsíci

      The Mk4 can be made into a very powerful and well setup car by using various components from other models, like R32 bushes, TT steering rack, modify the engine etc and then it becomes more of a 'true' GTI I feel.
      The Mk2 does everything so welll from out of the box though and that is its biggest appeal for me.

      @@golfmk2 It’s the first car I have memories of as a child. I remember feeling safe and comfortable in it as dad drove. I’m 21 now and the car was passed down as my first car. It’s been a good car with not many headaches to solve despite what people say. Just do the maintenance and the car treats you right. It’s a 100% stock 2003 Silverstone Grey GTI VR6 with 200,100 miles. It’s gone cross country multiple times and up the snowy mountains of colorado like a champion just pass every modern car on the road like it was made for it. I like the shape and feel of the car most. It fits my style and I like the VR engine a lot. I don’t have experience driving MK1, MK2, or MK7 but I like the like the aesthetics of those cars as well.

    • @golfmk2
      @golfmk2  Před 9 měsíci

      That's a very good reason for the Mk4 being your preference. The VR6 is a peach of an engine in both 12v and 24v form. Having the sentimental value for a car is invaluable too. A big reason why I'm in Mk2 Golfs myself, my dad owned 4 Mk2 Jettas during my childhood.

      I've yet to drive a Rallye, so I can't comment on how they drive , but I do like the look of them a lot - when they are fitted with wheels that fill the box arches! Otherwise the standard fit Sebrings can look a bit lost.

      @MikeOcksmells that's the key point, 'if looked after well'. Unfortunately it's a dying art knowing how to tune a K-Jet so many owners find they run badly, not knowing what the cause is and can be chasing their tail - ask me how I know... 😅
