F1 2021 is a racing game that caters to players of all skill levels, but also rewards those that want to challenge themselves. Today, weâre talking about how to drive without assists in F1 2021.
In this F1 2021 tutorial Iâll be taking you through what I feel is the best order to switch each assist off in, so that you can experience an ideal learning curve going forward.
In most racing games, assists are designed to help players who struggle with certain aspects of driving their car. This is no different in F1 2021.
The first thing to point out is that assists generally make a car safer and not faster, so if youâre looking to improve your performance, youâll want to learn how to drive with some, or maybe all, of them disabled.
By turning various assists off, you increase the complexity of the driving experience, however you also increase the amount of control you have over the car itself.
This can allow you to do things that werenât previously possible, some of which are to your advantage.
That being said, thereâs no right or wrong way to choose what assists to want to use, so if youâre having more fun with some assists turned on, leave them on.

Learning how to drive without assists in F1 2021 may seem daunting, but can become easy with the right approach.
But why turn them off though?
In most racing games, assists are there to help players who struggle with driving their car.
This is fine, and if F1 is more fun for you with some assists turned on, leave them on.
That being said, itâs possible to improve your laptimes and beat faster cars by learning to drive with a few of them turned off.
Driving becomes more complicated and itâs easier to make mistakes, but on the flipside you also have far more control over the car itself.
You also donât have to turn off every assist at the same time, and some are easier to master than others, so letâs focus on the easy ones first.
â Graduating From Casual
Depending on what Race Style youâre using, you may not be able to change the Assist settings in F1 2021 at all, so letâs take care of that first.
If youâre playing on Casual, switch to Standard and youâll see all of the settings you can change. Thereâs even presets that suggest what ones to turn off first.
Auto DRS automatically opens the rear wing whenever youâre allowed to do so, though by switching it off you can now choose to delay the activation in tricky corners.
This can be useful if youâre driving without Traction Control, as opening the rear wing reduces rear grip, and may cause you to slide.
Next up weâve got the Steering Assist, which attempts to steer the car for you in order to keep you on the track.
This will typically keep you on the road, but you may find yourself fighting its suggestions sometimes, and switching it off will make you go faster.
Braking Assist does a similar thing to the brakes, and will often brake earlier than you want to, slowing you down too much.
Again, switching this off will help you go faster, and you can still keep Anti-Lock Brakes on if you want.
Pit Assist and Pit Release Assist are interesting ones, as you may gain an advantage by leaving them on.
In short, Pit Assist will stop you getting penalties from entering the pitlane too quickly, and Pit Release Assist will automatically release you once youâve done your pitstop, and stop you getting penalties on Pit Exit.
ERS Management is another one you might want to remove, as it automatically handles your battery deployment during a race.
A simple way to manage ERS is to only use it at the start of long straights, before switching it off at high speed. That way you get the speed boost it provides, without draining it too much, too early.
The remaining assists are a little trickier to master but also give you the biggest boosts in performance, so letâs start with the one I recommend turning off first.
â Manual Gears
Manual Gears is the first of the major assists I would recommend you try turning off, as it gives you more fine control over your pace through corners.
Upshifting is rather easy, you wait for the shift lights to appear on your display, and once they reach the gear number youâre at the best point to shift up.
This is the ideal shift point for most cars, and youâll quickly learn to do this without thinking.
For downshifting, you want to pay attention to the noise the engine makes, and shift down when it sounds low.
Normally this is just after the shift lights are no longer lit up.
Once youâre comfortable with the basics, you can now try techniques such as Short-Shifting and Engine-Braking.
Short-Shifting is when you deliberately shift up gears early, long before the shift lights are lit up.
This is handy out of slow corners or in the rain, especially if you drive without Traction Control.
Engine-Braking on the other-hand is where you shift down a few gears very quickly, normally at the start of a braking zone.
This helps you slow down a little quicker, and brake later as a result.
To do this, quickly shift down 2 or 3 gears at the start of a corner, before slowly going down the rest of the gears to your desired speed.
Using Manual Gears will take some practice, but over time feel natural and the extra control you have over your carâs speed and rotation will make a big difference to your performance.
â ABS
Next up we have ABS, the Anti-Lock Braking System.
This detects when your wheels are about to lock up, and automatically releases the brakes for a split-second before applying them again.
You can brake as hard as you can and still make the corner, although it does take slightly longer to slow the car down than it would without ABS enabled.
When driving without ABS, youâll have to constantly feel the limit of the tyres and just how much pressure you can apply while slowing the car down.
Ultimately, it comes down to a combination of two factors.
You can brake harder at high speed than at low speed, and the more you turn the steering wheel the less you should brake.
Balancing both of those is tricky, but stick with it and after a few days youâll get the hang of it.
One quick tip here is to focus on braking in a straight line to begin with.
Once youâve got a feel for the brakes and developed the muscle memory, you can then try combining braking with turning, for specific corners.
â Traction Control
While getting into corners is tricky, getting out of them is one of the most common difficulties I see players struggle with.
Driving without Traction Control makes it much, much easier to spin the car, but at the same time also allows you to control your exit speed and rotation to a great degree. This extra control allows you to exit corners faster.
The easiest way to do this is to gradually add more throttle out of a corner, instead of putting it all down in one go.
Much like with ABS you will need to develop a feel for the limit of grip, though itâs a little easier to do than it is under braking.
When the car begins to slide too much, gently back off the throttle and turn the car to straighten it up, and then drop more power down again.
In most scenarios, you wonât want to go full-throttle until youâre almost entirely straight.
â Racing Line
One more assist to consider switching off is the Dynamic Racing Line.
While this may seem simple in theory, it challenges you on a different level to the other assists, as itâs not the car you need to learn, but the tracks themselves.
To help with this, itâs best to break down each corner into simple components.
First you have the braking phase.
This normally starts around the 100 metre board, with your car on the outside line.
Brake in a straight line and bring the car down to the right speed before turning in.
During the turn-in phase, youâll be looking to bring the car from the outside line towards the inside line, clipping the apex at the middle of the turn.
As you near the apex cast your eye beyond the apex, and get a sense for where the car is going to end up.
In most scenarios you want the car on the outside line again so that you can get a faster exit.
As you pass the apex you begin the exit phase of the corner, gradually adding power and straightening the car up again before going full-speed.
While corners come in many shapes and sizes, this is the basic principle behind each.
Over time youâll begin to identify the right approach for every corner, in order to get the best laptimes.
For more detailed analysis subscribe for more videos, and I wish you the best of luck, in your next race.
I bought this game one month ago and it's my first proper racing game. I started playing without assists since day one. I couldn't finish a single lap, now I can at least do three before spinning or getting DNF lmao
UPDATE: I can now win races against 80% AI in tracks like Imola, Silverstone, Monza or Interlagos, which is a huge step from not even being able to finish a 25% vs 60% AI. I still can't do street circuits, Spain or Hungary very well tho
5 more years and you'll get a whole race.
In last place of course :D
I took me a years but I can finally drive with everything off. It`s hard but also much more fun!
That's what it takes baby steps. Especially with F1 cars. Focus on going around the track slowly checking breaking points. Then build up speed. The slow progression in speed will help staying on the track more.
started 2 days ago with all assists, currently on race 16 with all assists off except the line on corners. ai level from 39 to 87
Trust me, itâs the best to immediately start without Assists, I started with Traction Control on Medium, ABS on & Manual Gearbox⊠itâs so hard to learn
0:32 giving me PTSD flashbacks
I've played manual and no traction control in racing games for years, but only recently tried no ABS on F12020. It was hard at first, but honestly it makes the game better. You can feel what's happening, it kind of teaches you how to manage your tyres better, and it's so much more rewarding to get right. It says a lot about how necessary force feedback is though, and how much better it has gotten. ABS on older games and controls was a nightmare.
Without loadcell pedals you will never really know how fast an F1 car can stop. Loadcells wont lock the brakes up. Dynamic racing line is for people who run non loadcell pedals from what my pedals say. I only ever use Dynamic racing line to learn the corner speeds.
I found that reducing the break bias to 50-52% reduces the front wheel locking a bit and keeps the tyres from heating up too much.
Some tracks (Monaco, Zandfort, Hungarian GP) are still a pain though.
I learned pretty fast to how to not lock up tyres on a controller, it was tricky at first but now im getting better
I also find open wheelers a lot easier to run with ABS off as you can also visually see when the fronts lock. Closed wheel is a lot more difficult without really good feedback on a sim.
Driving without racing line is hard at first but it's really fun to learn the track and get better and eventually you don't have to play with that ugly marker on the road.

Brilliant video, concise and well presented! Gonna follow your advice when my wheel arrives!
Loving the content mate, keep up the good work! I've been getting better without assists but it is a bit demoralising seeing people quicker than me with all the assists on haha.
Hey PJ, I hope all is well. I miss your vids man! I'm rewatching this gem to hopefully help me get faster.
Thank you this video has helped me a lot with my skill Iâll make sure Iâll subscribe
Awesome job on this video man keep it up đđ
I started playing without assists directly, back in f1 2019. It took me 50 hours to hold my own but It was worth it.
Thanks for the video
I will hope to improve pit assist and racing line
These videos are so good. I watched the manual gears one and even though I still use auto because I can't get used to the way I have to hold the controller I'm still happier to drive manual if I want to now
Change your the gear shift up/down buttons to whateverâs natural for you
My days of racing on controller are long gone. But on every game I had it mapped to X downshift B upshift. It quickly becomes second nature youâll just go by sound.
I drive mostly with just the automatic gears, pit assists and a bit of traction control. As a pad player, it's hard to get the sensitivity to manage with no traction control. Biggest issue I have is excessive tyre heating with the ABS off, especially as your car gets close to maxed out.
Small tip : Use your analog stick as your throttle. Controlling the speed is easier than if using the triggers. Enjoy.
Thanks mate I needed to turn off steering and braking assist they annoy me and now itâs way better
This video is amazing. Subscribed
Iâm an amateur at racing games but i noticed in AC in F2004 that once turning the all assists off, the car felt like a damn rocket!
the perfect video to understand some basics! great job ma dude!
a question tho, how much does playing with a controller affects gameplay?
You can be fast with both. Controller is a bit easier to feel throttle and brake limits, wheel is better for steering.
Ah those lovely beginner days when we went online with couple of friends and i disabled the assist for the race, i think we did like 30mins for 5laps in Spielberg đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł painful but so funny
The tyres when locked be like: UNDERSTEER PAIN AND ONE LAP DEATH
Taking the racing line off is first to go, that's why I like racing because of working out curves
And here I am turning off Brake Assist, TC and switching to Manual gears all at once trying to practice lol
Sometimes going in at the deep end is the way to learn đ
How's it going?
Iâve just downloaded the game, I drive in forza with assists off and thought it would somewhat translate into F1 but it really doesnât. After a couple hours I did manage a nice time at Spa with a few mistakes and then eventually a Grand Prix in barhain which was so much fun trying to do all these things with traffic around me
been playing about 100 hours now with the wheel. I started every assist off expect the racing line and improved from AI 40 to 90+. Still scared to turn off the racing line. Mainly because my friend also uses the line and we have tight battles in coop :D
Hi PJ, another great video mate! What would you recommend turning off after mastering manual gears? ABS or switch traction control to Medium? Thanks!
:35 Tierney casually NOT crashing into Verstappen
this was so helpful
When I decided to switch the major assists off, I checked which one makes you lose more time and it was traction control. It's a big mistake to switch traction control off before automatic gears, the car will spin non stop because it shift gears automatically during the accelaration in low speed corners disrupting the balance of the car and I just thought I was really bad at the game (not totally wrong tbh).
Don't turn traction control off before the gears
Yup, gears make Traction Control easier đ

Iâve always drove with automatic gears, but after this, Iâll think about trying manual now to enhance and improve my lap times eventually

the only two assist that i cant turn off is ABS, its very hard to feel the brakes with controller, racing line though i can turn it off, i just cant be arsed to learn a track just for a quick run
I have NEVER used the 3d racing line in f1 games or any game because I feel like it is better to find out the layout yourself , when and how hard to brake and accelerate
The time has come... i race 107 ai at most tracks but i have abs on, medium tc and (im embarrassed about this one) automatic gears, i reckon i can move up to 110 ai with manual gears as i just dont think there is any more tiime to gain, but its gonna be so hard lol.
That antilock brakes session showing a mercedes at baku xD Expected some magic
I like to sprinkle some references into my B-Roll where I can đ
0:35 if this happened irl then the community wouldn't hate lewis that much
The only assist I used is the racing line because I canât be bothered to learn all the exact breaking points for all the tracks đ
Can you do a video on how to setup the car? Obviously all cars are different especially if itâs a custom team but rn I just copy the fastest time trial setup but sometimes I can tell itâs not the best setup for my car but idk what to change
Once I learn enough info to share I'll make a video.
I just turned all that stuff off one day and started playing ..took about a day to get it all..but the pit i leave that
As a pad player, even tho this vid is well done, I think no tutorial will ever help me to drive without traction control, and I can't buy a wheel either because I'm just a kid and where I live, kids can't have a job, welp, it is what it is. Great video though! I'm so happy that your channel is slowly growing, please make more shorts, that's how I found your channel
Linearity is a godsend when getting accustomed to it. Itâs definitely possible, though I will admit I felt the exact same way when I first turned it off.
Now I have it off, and rarely even think about it. You just need to be gradual with every movement.
It is not impossible. You just need to really concentrate on using the full range of the triggers and sticks and not slam them full left, full right, full pressure. Since in most other games you dont really make use of like 30% control input, it is almost as if you learn to use the controller in a new way. And it takes practise. When I started disabling TC and ABS with my xBox controller I was also tempted to give up. You don't learn this in one race and it can be frustrating. But you will be getting better. So if you want to drive without assist, I encourage you to give it another go with this in mind. However, if you don't care that much and have fun with assists, stick with it to kep the fun :D
@@gregathol I'll try to experiment with the linearity, I know PJ's made a video on it already but I haven't had time to really experiment, maybe I'll be able to in this summer break
@@Haniel93 I will try to do that, I think the problem is, without TC when I slowly pickup the power, I'm like 10 seconds off the pace, and that just demotivates me. But I wanna learn! The game's even more fun without assists
@@hazikaiyan5903 I used to use no tc before I switched to wheel and my advice is to just be cautious in the first 3 gears and full throttle in 4th
I find the difficulty evaluation really interesting, because to me it seems, that it might be totally different for certain players. For me for example turning off the dynamic racing line was between easy and medium, i would say. After a few laps (and maybe one of your track guides ;) ) I remembered the braking points and had similar lap times as before. On the other hand I struggle with manual gears - not because i cannot shift to the right gear, but because i find it really difficult to concentrate on the gears and the right breaking points.
so I think for certain player types like me, developing the needed automatisms (technical aspects of driving) are just more difficult to learn than the theoretical aspects.
btw. i feel like manual starts should be included in this list. easy to learn, hard to master.
Interesting to me too. I started playing half a year ago, and never used any assists beside Anti-lock for the first few days before I turned it off, not because it would assist me, but because I feel it would hinder me. The racing line because it shifts my focus away from where I need to look, and traction control because... well, I want to feel the traction of the car myself so I know the limit.
Gears come naturally to me, just listen to the engine and shift accordingly. And ofc I want to shortshift whenever I want.
I'd range the difficulty like this:
Easy: racing line, gears + minor ones
Medium: Anti-lock
Hard: Traction
AND THAT'S JUST A THEORY! I'll show myself out.
@@Lontasmenn well yes. in hindsight, manual gears was also relatively easy to learn. so for me learning to drive without racing line was about half an hour to an hour per track, manual gears took about a week to get used to it, no abs seems also to be okay after a week, even though im still massively slow, but for driving without tc i can say, a week was not enough. i can go around the track without spinning, but it takes me like 3-5 seconds longer than before
If you need 'half an hour to an hour per track' for learning to drive them without the racing line then there is no way that you are getting decent lap times. Learning braking zones is easy when the only variable that you are looking into is if you stay on the track or not, but it takes WAY, WAY longer if you are trying to get good lap times without a dynamic raceline.
@@Liphzzy For you, maybe.
But not everyone is like you.
Did I mention I've never played with racing lime before? Yep
@@Lontasmenn No. Not 'for you maybe', and saying that proves that you are not the smartest tool in the shed, not even close.
Try looking at it from a logical point of view, if that is something that you are familiar with, which I honestly doubt:
If you know how to drive without traction control, brake assists etc, you can use those skills on literally every single course, because it is a basic skillset, mastering braking zones on the other hand is individual on EVERY.SINGLE.TRACK.AND.EVERY.SINGLE.CURVE, it takes way longer, since, as I've said, it is not a general skillset but something that needs to be practiced and perfectioned for every single track.
So, again, if you say that driving without racing line is an easy skill to master, that proves that you are not good at the game, sure, you might think that it was easy to learn, but your times will prove my statement.
My thesis is that both of you are nowhere near decent times in time trial, you can prove me wrong by showing me your time trial times though. :)
I only use Traktion Controll on Medium
I cant beat AI 60 without it but with it i can beat 75
I use old logitech pedals and for me its hard to use the throttle gently
F1 drivers have said codemasters f1 games feel more "realistic" with traction control set to medium , wondering if others use this (its only assist I use, load cell is essential for No abs also I feel (it made it better for me as soon as I got good pedals and turned ABS off it felt far more "natural to adjust the pressure on the brake )
I believe that was in reference to F1 2019, as some of the drivers' feedback was applied to '20 and '21 đ

Controller is so much easier than the steering wheel. In all other racing games I tried by using steering wheel. I had no issues at all. I used the controller, no issues, but in f1, and only f1 game, I suck at steering wheel. Some people told me that it's because I'm not yet used to the steering wheel, but I've tried them for like 4 months. I still don't know why.

If you have all the assists on and Braking Assist on high then seriously consider turning traction control to medium. It doesn't make the gamer harder you will still not spin, especially with braking assist on high, but you will still be much faster without even doing anything differently.

Buy some loadcells pedals. I then spent like 2hrs adjusting them to the F1 game configuration. Once you have brake and throttle matched perfectly to the pedals, with a bit of practice you will barely notice the difference between traction control on and traction control off. All you have to know is, short shift 1st, feed the pedal in 2nd and usually 3rd, never throttle over curbs in F1 2021 and try keep the car straight as possible. in corners I tend to driver up a gear so I can tap the throttle mid corner need be. The rest is learning some corners and tracks are more slippery than others. Like turn 2 in Austria is lethal for no traction control.

Even if I set Throttle Linearity to 100 (to make minimum throttle input almost negligible), I still keep spinning out. I'll be coming out of a turn, onto a straight, and my car/tires are straight, and the second I hit the gas => spinoutđ I've tried short-shifting, using the preset with the most downforce, and turned [other] assists ON, and I still keep spinning. I just can't do it. I give up. (For now.) Edit: TC on Medium is doable...
keep trying! youâll get it. so much finesse goes into every single turn, practice is all it takes. not an hour or two. days! weâd all be F1 racers otherwise. đ as long as youâre having fun, right? :)
I think you might getting on the gas too aggressively even with the linearity turned all the way up. Try gradually applying down to halfway as you're exiting the corner, but instead of slamming down after you're straight, continue gradually applying until you're at full throttle.
â @RedHado It's been an hour, I should be a pro by nowđ @@VanillaBourbon You are probably right. It's just so hard, when your instinct is to jump on the accelerator to be as fast as you can. It just feels like I'm losing time by easing out of turns so blatantlyđ
@@eagletrippin I know that feeling! Just have to remember that it's still easing off less around the corner than if it were done automatically by TC! After all, the reason you're spinning is because you're getting more power than TC would ever allow.
It feels weird, but just be slower with your inputs. You have to be really patient with it and it feels slow at first so it's really counterintuitive. I play on a controller, still struggle a bit against AI coming out of tight corners, but it is doable. Oh, lift off the throttle a bit when you change up too, at least until 4th, 5th sometimes. It's all about keeping the revs steady.
Just brake at the marker 100
I found playing on console you need traction control on.
But I finally done no brake assist or steering and traction on medium
0:32 gave me deja vu
I've just been in this place before.
How to switch off steering assist? It's annoying
Where can I found his camera settings
In the other video I made about them đ
@@PJTierney Watched it, thanks!
I am still trying to master manual gears (or at least have it feel like second nature), particularly downshifting properly. But when I played around back in automatic gears yesterday on the Austria track, I had my fastest time using automatic đ€·đœââïž (followed by a run with manual gears only .008 slower) Sometimes it seems like auto is fasterđ€
I'm the kind of guy that plays with assists on always since F1 2015. Although there's definitely more stuff to manage in F1 2020 and it's subsequent releases. I've been playing the My Team career with assists on cause I just wanna have fun most of the time. But I really want to try losing some assists one by one cause I'm definitely nowhere close to pacing other drivers when playing ranked.
ABS is such a pain in the arse to learn in pad :(
If you have a controller with trigger feedback (Xbox One or PS5) it's a lot easier.
@@PJTierney what about a worn dualshock?
But I literally canât find that menu in the first place
How to cange to standar i tryd can I get some help plz
When you are creating a race, press Triangle/Y to flick between the Race Styles.

It's just creating enough "muscle memory" per assist u turn of, so if u play with only tc full/medium and abs and line. Than u have to give urself the time to get used to it. If u don't want to learn it than it will never work for u. If u have some motivation with the thoughts that u Will be faster after a couple of weeks later. Line is basicly beeing to lazy to learn some brakemarker boards btw.
Idk where to put them off canât find kt
