Driving without Traction Control is one of the toughest things you can do in F1 2020, yet is also the most rewarding when you get it right. It is a challenging skill to master, but when you do, you’ll truly feel like a racing driver.
If you want to know how to drive without Traction Control in F1 2020, I can help with this tutorial. Traction Control is often the last setting a player turns off when learning how to drive without assists in F1 2020, but with these tips you should be able to handle it in no time.

The hardest part for me was the feeling I was too slow out of the corners because I didn't apply enough throttle. However, my lap times improved regardless. Weird feeling, but a giant step forward for me.
Sometimes you have to go slow to go fast 😉
exactly my thoughts although Im no where near as fast as the top guys or IRL drivers
@@Daidalos69 Most of us aren't, but if we can feel we put in a good effort and get results, that's enough really 🙂
I'm not esports quick in F1 either, though I am close to it in Rally.

Yeah same here, just bought myselfa steering wheel and turned tractor off and manual gears on. I am way slower out of a corner, but improve every day regardless.
I picked 19 up during quarantine, and just got 20 with my new fantac wheel, and your vids are a god send man Thank you so much!

Okay, I rewatched this and I'm defining going to play with the linearity. I haven't messed with my wheel settings much but I'm going to give it a go. Great video, thanks!
I just can't thank you enough PJ for making this video. I am fairly new to the F1 games, or any sim racing games in general. This video has helped me understand more on how to drive without traction control and how to drive better. Thank you so much for your videos PJ! Love from Malaysia.
Glad it helped 🙂
That's the plan with these tutorials, get people to _understand_ the thing so that they can apply the knowledge to any racing game.
Best F1 tutorial CZcamsr🔥Keep it up
Thanks for the kind words 🙂
I used full TCR and my AI difficulty on 85 and I’ve used these tips and been driving with TCR off and now I’m driving against 100% difficulty and still being able to keep up. I’ve also become much better on multiplayer and I will Finish top 3 most races if I’m not screwed up constantly
mate today I just learned to drive without ABS and with Manual Gear from you, about to try without traction control aswell
100/10 would watch again
Thanks for the video PJ.
My struggle at first was trying to replicate everything you said in the video. And oh boy, a mess it was.
What helped was, I put the TC on medium but started to work the throttle as though it was off. It helped me get used to applying the basics. Once I got the hang of it, I turned it off completely and it was a smooth ride- well so so...
I'm still slow out of corners but getting better everyday.
Watching this and with the help of these videos I've taken 4 seconds off my times by taken it to medium. Thanks PJ, great stuff 👍
Yay! Keep it up 🙂
You come thru in the clutch fam... I just got my wheel as well.. I needed this 💯💯
Glad it helped 🙂
I think the biggest challenge is waiting for the tyres to heat up when exiting the corner. F1 cars in particular are really sensitive to throttle input so If you put the power down too soon the car will bite you in an instant. Was a great video to watch mate, you have earned a new sub and will definitely give this a go :D
I agree, and I’ve found that the first lap after a Safety Car is the toughest. Tyres are frozen by that point so be extra careful 🙂
I’m still on controller and “Medium” setting is working well learning how to control the car.
Yeah if you’re still learning than Medium is a safe bet on a pad. Once you feel Medium is slowing you down, turn it off 🙂
thx man your vids are helping me out a lot

The settings broke and I always drive manual and spin whenever I go fast
Nice video! I read the books "Ultimate Speed Secrets: The Complete Guide to High-Performance and Race Driving" by Ross Bentley, and "The Perfect Corner: A Driver's Step-by-Step Guide to Finding Their Own Optimal Line Through the Physics of Racing" also. These have been a great help.
I think I've read The Perfect Corner before, it's good 🙂
Great video. I think codemasters should really make assists off alot faster than assists on. I can use assists off however when racing online the risk of it off isn't worth it in my opinion because the moment you get wing damage which is highly likely you're going to struggle. I use assists off for career mode with 100 AI as it improves the gameplay just online it's too frustrating when people force you off onto slippery lines/curbs ect. Also braking later and they just turn in on you.
What I found in 2019 was that Traction Control off was a big disadvantage online, not because of the grip out of corners, but because when a car taps your rear wheel you used to instantly spin. It's why medium TC was so powerful.
I don't think it's as severe in 2020.
Something maybe overlooked by more experienced players - is keeping your wits. I am still new to sim racing and im really getting the hang of managing driving with no TCS, but in a race setting sometimes you get over zealous and will preemptively slam the h throttle down for an overtake out of a corner, and bite it. keep your wits in a race setting, it's all about consistency
Yup, don't be a Turn 3 Grosjean, be like Kimi 😎
Another tip is to turn off braking assist, cuz unlike TC, brake is easier to learn, and the lowest brake assist actually cost you more time than medium TC
These tutorials are super helpful, thanks. What camera settings do you use, I like how you can see the front wing, I changed mine a bit to be similiar, but I really liked how you had it
I have a video on camera settings that shows them all 🙂
@@PJTierney awesome, thanks!
Hey can you teach us how to set up a good strategy?
One thing I noticed today while playing around with the older Senna era Mclaren cars is they are waaaaaay different feeling on "medium" TCS when compared to the 2020 cars. The back end really wants to kick out unless you are very careful with the throttle. I cant imagine how hard these are to drive with no TCS. I guess that is the aero/downforce difference from the late 80s as compared to modern F1. Very noticeable in game for sure.
Yup, the old cars are wild.
One thing to remember about the 1988 McLaren is that you’ll get a lot of turbo lag. You press the accelerator and then have to wait for the boost to kick in. Modern F1 cars use the MGU-H to eliminate lag.
Lot of the old mid 90s to early 2000's have built in traction control already
@@simonashley8914 Yup, Traction Control was outlawed around 2006/2007. You can really lean on cars like the Ferrari F2004.
Hi, P.J, I'd really like a proper guide on toe in/out and the camber settings.
These are usually the aspect I have the most trouble refining.
For me, I often find the actual turning circle of my car, my ability to get it fully rotated, at very slow speed, a big issue.
Perhaps, a full appraisal of all the set up parameters and how each can increase or decrease your cornering ability at low speed versus high speed.
Regads my initial query, specifically, it would be nice to have a visual representation of how the toe and camber affect the car, what the least/lowest amount does compared to the most/highest amount, what you can do to combine them (if anything) for better results, how they can help rotate the car in slower corners etc...
Anyway, enjoyed the video.
Subbed.
That's a good suggestion, and I've seen a few asking for a tuning guide.
I don't tune a whole lot myself but I'll look into it and if I can provide anything of value, make a video.
@@PJTierney
Nice one.
Hi. First thank you for the Video. Subbed. Can you make a Video TCS on vs TCS Off and the Same with ABS? Thanks
That might come down the line, good idea 🙂
Gonna try this tomorrow, I drive no assists but after moving to wheel, im struggling real bad with spinning and crashing. Im gonna try the 50 throttle linearity. Hope it gives me a better feel
I'm up to 70 Linearity now if you want to give that a go too 🙂
@@PJTierney I'm on it tonight so will try both, hopefully works need some consistency for races
To be honest, driving without traction control is easy, but no traction control and no braking assist is the pinnacle of difficulty
Agreed. Some corners seem like it's impossible to brake with the wheel straight. I really struggle with those. Bahrain turn 10 is the worst, I still don't know how to handle it without ABS.
@@rinleez I get nightmares about that corner with abs turned off literally next to Impossible
Could you explain more about the differentials to manage wheel spin
Short version:
Lower percentage is better.
Longer version:
Higher number locks the wheels more, so that they rotate at the same speed.
Thing is, when you round a corner the outside wheels have a longer distance to travel than the inside ones.
If the axle is locked and they spin at the same speed, the inside wheel will be spinning too fast for the turn, which causes you to lose control.
Your goal should be to set it as high as you can without the back of the car sliding when you out the throttle down. The default 70% is good, but 50% is a better starting point and you can increase it later.
I personally love racing with no trac control on f12020 cuz it’s way faster but even when F1 drivers did their runs through the game they said medium traction is closer to real world and no trac is closer to how the f2 cars feel. For that I usually do my leagues with no assists except trac control on and turn it off when I’m going for Time trials.
The comment you're referring to had to do with F1 2019, the handling in 2020 was improved based on driver feedback.
Im on my ps5 with my Ps5 controller, O have everything disabled, I even drive Manually, The only thing I can't do is Switch from medium Traction control to none, btw, didnt notice any difference between abs and no abs xD
Im working on getting better with medium right now. Im a new player on pad
It's tricky at the start but you'll get there 🙂
I am his 3010th sub
Yay, I passed 3,000 😄
Thank you so much for this mate! Is it possible to go without traction control on a keyboard? I turned down to the medium though, which is fine, but going without it completely feels like I am going to need a wheel with pedals. All the other assists are off too.
Good question. I haven't tried but I imagine the way to do it on keyboard is to rapidly tap the throttle since you can't hold a percentage.
Press start, go to preferences, go to assists, make sure the "traction control" is set to "off".
Facts.
So changing the differential to 50% for turns makes sense, but can you please explain what the benefit of increasing it for straights is? Also that tip about throttle linearity is super helpful! I was lamenting the fact that it's so hard to control throttle speed with the controller but that's going to make it way easier
Higher differential lowers the difference in rotational speed between the two rear wheels. If they're both pulling at the same rate, the car can propel forward faster.
In a turn though the inside wheel is supposed to rotate less than the outside, so if the differential is too high it spins too much and you spin the car.
@@PJTierney thanks so much for your guides. I went from being a complete newb to racing games as of 2 days ago (when I got my copy of F1) to getting pole position on Bahrain in career mode on hard difficulty with a ferrari. I have most assists off, going to try taking abs & traction control (have it set to medium right now) completely off when I get my steering wheel next week (its way too hard for me to modulate braking & accelerating on a controller when both assists are completely off). I'm 50-50 on if I'll ever taking the racing lines off. I currently use them as a point of reference, and make my own racing lines based on it. I tried playing with them off, but the track moves too fast for my eyes to see the distance markers in time to make use of them
This video should be a lesson at schools. lt is on point, no unnecessary talking and viewers directly get what are they here for.
Thank you for making this video!

It’ll be hard to make a better one for F1 2021
Top o t'morning ta ya dere pj
Ah Jayzus 😉
Hi PJ! Can you tell me what would be the best sim combination for playing F1 2020? Please!
If you’re on about a racing rig, it depends on your budget. A Fanatec CSL Elite with a Formula/McLaren rim is good enough for most people, or a Thrustmaster with the new Ferrari wheel.
I’ll try theses, it’s weird how my Formula 1 car still spins out in like 6th gear. I drove without ABS today and I’m getting the hand of it, when I learn TC I’ll be assist less.
You'll get the hang of it 🙂
Hi, thanks for the video. I have a problem with tc. Its either i too slow geting out of corners or i spin. I have lowered throttle to 100 linearity, everytime i push just a bit too much on the pedal it starts spining. It's like i'm driving in wet conditions. I have another problem with no tc control, it is when driving qualifying time , on some circuits the game "launches" you max speed near or in some low corner and i instantly go into wall unless i m prepared to release gas pedal and turning a bit in opposite directions. Not to mention my starts are just horrible. I'm way way faster with tc medium i don't know what to do.
100 is probably too much, I wouldn't go above 50.
I tried medium but it felt so weird… Like when its on full you can always trust it but at medium you never know when you can “send it” or throttle carefully.
For me, it’s all or nothing, and i’m currently practicing with absolutely no traction control.
No traction control best traction control, you can do it!
Interesting, driving without TC was absolutely easy for me, maybe because I'm used to driving IRL so the throttle control is there, breaking without ABS however is SO DIFFICULT to master, the amount you can apply changes so much all the time, I think that's the toughest thing to learn :(
Yeah no ABS is hard, upping linearity helps though.
i dont use traction control at all, its not as hard as it seems, just dont do fast movements to the wheels
I currently use ABS and medium traction control. Watched both vids just wondering what assist i should drop first?
I have a video showing you the order of what assists to turn off 🙂
TC is the hardest, leave that to last.
PJ, do you currently drive with 50 brake and throttle linearity? And also why the brake linearity that high?
I currently drive 50/50, yes.
I’m still finding the right balance for the brakes, as in some corners I lock up when I trail brake. My theory is that by lifting a little off the brake pedal, the linearity will mean that a lot of brake pressure in-game will be bled off, preventing me from overloading the tyres.
❤️
I honestly just can't get the hang of it, been watching tips for months
It's tough, as you're developing a feeling moreso than anything else. At some point you'll pick up the subtle feeling/noise/visual where a car's about to break loose, and let go of the throttle to catch it.
I'm going from full to medium to off
How were you able to equip the silver arrows livery for the Mercedes at 0:51 ?
I recorded that before the black one was patched in 🙂
I fell like Schumacher in 96
Any advice with throttle input because been struggling even on medium TC at race at Singapore tonight.
Try half throttle initially, and if you don't feel the back of the car getting loose bring it up more and more until you're full.
@@PJTierney need to work on wheel muscle memory then.
@@PJTierney tried the short shifting in my initial wheel Monaco practice works amazingly
Hey bro.. how to avoid brake lock when pressing brake? Because when i turn off the anti-lock brake it easily lock the front brake even though just a small amount of pressure i press
I have an ABS guide with all the answers 🙂
@@PJTierney noted 👍
Which cockpit settings are you using?
I'll share them in my next video 😎
Ive just started playing f1 again after 3 yrs, i have swapped from controller to thrustmaster rs300 wheel and feel much slower and always understeering. Linearity on throttle and wheel are at 0, should they be more? Im still full traction control for now.
Make sure your wheel is calibrated properly first, check the wheel settings guide for that.
@@PJTierney thanks, i had a play around and it took around 8 hours to eventually beat my controller time, but the throttle liniarity has been a winner on 30. Now got a good feeling for trail braking which helps a lot. Managed low 1.27 on bahrain with medium tc. Just slowly trying to remove the few assists i had.
Would you say working with the linearity also works for a controller or is that not available for controllers?
It’s practically essential for controllers.
@@PJTierney Ay cheers, im really starting to notice i miss exit speed with TC on medium so i want to screw around with no TC.
I still spin every corner😂
Does the same rule of thumb apply to GT Sport?
The basics apply to every racing game really; I learned them in Forza.

Still me: “Why are the AI so slow all of a sudden?”

Can you help me on race starts without traction control? I can race without traction control very easily but race starts always mess me up. I always get okay releases but am always slower than the cars in front and behind me. 90% of the time 3 seconds after a launch, I always spin out or get significant wheel spin and lose so many places. Any tips?
I have a video on race starts that can help 🙂
What’s your camera setting mate?
Tv pod??
I have a whole video on it 🙂
I have a problem, when i set throttle linearity to 50 or anything the throttle only takes a little force on my trigger and is instantly 100 how do i fix this or is it my controller? (Im new)
Is it doing that when at default value (0) as well?
If so, and it's an Xbox One or PS4 controller, then the game isn't recognising the trigger as an analogue input.
If you're not using a trigger (like, you're pressing X for throttle or something), then they only do 0/100.
If it's not one of those controllers, check the F1 game website for a list of supported controllers.
PJ Tierney mate im so stupid it was my elite controller i had it on a custom setup as you can switch between 1 and 2 obviously 1 was for a shooter i think, i switched it to 2 and now it works perfectly fine. This video has helped me setup my second custom setup for driving now lol
What ur twitch name
what he does on 2:18 is that possible to set on a ps4 controller?
That's the throttle input, essentially how hard you pull the trigger. Should be doable on PS4 too although Xbox has vibrating triggers.
Am I the only one that likes the Silver merc livery better?
I didn't like the 2020 silver design, but I did like the 2019 a lot.
I play on controller and my problem is that the throttle is to sensitive so I can basically only either go full speed or 2 KPH😂😂😂
Does anybody know how to fix that???
*pls I'm desperate*
I have a controller settings guide that may help.
I turned off the assists and im 5-6 seconds slower than my bests
There's an initial shock as you begin to adapt but after a while you'll catch your pace as you can do more things with the car now. If you don't catch back up, no shame in turning assists on again.
Vettel needs to see this video ;)
I chose the red car for a reason 😁
It wasnt that hard to switch for me it took only couple of laps to get used to now days i never spin and laptimes are faster. For everyone that uses assists trust me the game is much more fun without them.
