  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing condition that is believed to affect 1 in 4 adults worldwide, becoming one of the most prevalent liver diseases. The illness occurs when fat builds up in the liver and it typically triggers no warning signs or symptoms in the early stages. If left undiagnosed, NAFLD may lead to inflammation, scarring of the liver and even organ failure, which may require transplantation. While healthy individuals can develop the disease, those who are overweight, obese and have diabetes or high blood pressure are most at risk. During this live Q&A show, liver disease expert Dr. Mary Rinella and registered dietician Annie Guinane will discuss the warning signs of this disease and how diet plays a role.

One thing that’s not mentioned ever is Sleep Apnea and how it can play a pivotal role in people with Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. Untreated Sleep Apnea affects glucose levels and not getting proper sleep is extremely hard on the whole body, leaving organs like the heart having to work harder that puts you at risk of Heart Attack, Stroke, Hypertension, Diabetes, even sudden death.
I was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and my sleep doctor told me it’s going to be very hard to lose weight, after telling her I was diagnosed with Stage 3 liver fibrosis via a Fibroscan. For me, I cannot tolerate wearing a CPAP machine and I’m having a terrible time losing the weight my Gastroenterologist told me I need to lose to keep my condition from progressing; Liver Failure.
I’m also on a psychiatric medication that causes weight gain, so not only am I obese from poor diet, I am because of Sleep Apnea and the medication I’m on. I go to the gym regularly, but I still have things keeping me from losing weight. I also don’t have a lot of energy because I’m not sleeping well. I have a feeling my doctor is going to tell me, because I haven’t lost the weight that could really help my situation, that I have to do something drastic like bariatric surgery or weight loss medication, like Ozempic. I didn’t want to go that route all these months that have passed, but I may not have a option now. It’s going to be coming up on 8 months I was suppose to lose 10% of my body weight, about 25 pounds, and I’ve only lost 10 pounds. Not good! 💔

Have you looked into fasting? I follow Dr Jason fung the author of the obesity code and the podcast the fasting method. I’ve lost 32 lbs in 12 weeks when nothing else has worked for me. It’s been a life saver.

Can someone please comment if you can have fibrosis and just NAFL or when you have F1 or F2 or any amount of fibrosis does it automatically classified as NASH? It’s very confusing. Also what is the realistic progression per stage? Is it really 14 years per category for simple fatty liver and 7 years for Nash

I saw on the last 2 CT scans that I have a fatty liver and the enzymes was elevated in the last blood work however my reg dr told me it wasn’t anything to worry about. I have severe swelling and hurting in the top mid -right side directly under that rib area. I set here now absolutely miserable can’t lay down can’t sleep good swelling of feet and legs I also smother easy. I have many symptoms of the fatty liver. I finally got an appointment with a gastroenterologist tomorrow. I wish my dr had told me long ago about the fatty liver. I’m afraid I have damaged the liver although I don’t have any yellow of the skin or eyes.

I find quite mind blowing that the fat distribution in the human body varies among humans. What does cause fat distributed only in the belly? specifically in NON obese persons ( lean people )? Are you suggesting that the mere distribution of fat only in the belly might be the cause of the disease in lean people? They might have a bit of belly but they are not obese. If so, how can it be prevented- reversed in lean people who are already lean ?

Thank you for this informative video, Doctor! My MRI came back with an enlarged liver (17 cm) and fatty liver. I am a female in my mid-40’s. I am not overweight, I don’t drink alcohol or soda/sugary drinks. I don’t eat gluten, and I do eat lots of fruit. My diet doesn’t have enough vegetables. I do take a lot of anti inflammatory medication. My liver enzymes are perfect. My cholesterol and blood sugar are normal and had always been normal.
What is required for the fatty liver diagnosis? Aside from decreasing fruit and increasing vegetables, is there anything else I can do? Are liver enzymes supposed to be impacted for this diagnosis or is the MRI itself sufficient enough?

Liver enzymes may not be elevated until the liver is severely damaged. MRI is a very good diagnostic tool, if the MRI shows fatty liver, you have fatty liver. Fatty liver can be reversed with proper diet, exercise, in general, a lifestyle change. I'm a retired ICU RN who had fatty liver, milder form, lost 30 pounds, and lost the liver fat..from 194 to 164 lbs at 5ft7in. Best wishes to you.
