I remember the TV series Colditz in England many years ago. The castle looks much friendlier now!

Happy that you were able to see Colditz Castle. There are hundreds of beautiful castles and countryside in Germany. One of the most beautiful countries to visit.

You’ve brought back happy memories of my Honeymoon in 2012! You might think a bit strange thing to do or visit. Hubby and I were in our mid 40’s when we got married and wanted to do something different for our honeymoon and like you history buffs especially WWI and WW2. We decided to go on a Leger Coach tour and chose their Dambusters Tour….I don’t know if they still do it but if they do I thoroughly recommend it to all. We covered 6 countries in 9 days and visited the Merner, Sorber, and Eider dams, Colditz Castle, Stalag lift 3 where the Great Escape occurred , the Commonwealth War Cemetery where the 50 servicemen/escapees were murdered by the Nazi soldiers. We went to Dresden, one of the most heavily bombed cities by the Allies of the whole war, Berlin where we spent two days seeing various things and finally the grave of Guy Gibson the man who led the “Dambusters “ and its incredible to think of all he achieved in his short life….he died just 23 years old.
One of the great things about Leger ( and there are other firms who do similar tours), is you have a Personal tour guide on each coach and their knowledge is absolutely incredible. On our tour we had some ex servicemen and relatives who wished to visit fallen family members who just happened to be buried at Commonwealth Cemeteries on our route, not just the ones on our schedule so they arranged for wreaths for the graves and a couple of diversions . If you’ve never visited a Commonwealth Cemetery I do urge you to visit, no matter where they are located they are the most beautiful and peaceful, tranquil and strangely uplifting places. The locals help ensure they are kept immaculately with beautiful flowers everywhere and on Armistice and several other special commemorative days local school children will take flowers and place them upon each grave, such is the gratefulness of the people for their freedom, even 80 years on.
I’m so glad you got to visit Philip, it is an amazing place. As for the glider, I don’t know if you know but a few years ago a team from Channel 4, actually built a replica of the plane using photos and drawings and memories of ex Colditz prisoners who had actually worked on the plane. No one knew if it would fly, it was never tested nor actually flew but the group were determined to at least give it a go. The programme is called “ Escape from Colditz “ made by Channel 4 . I won’t spoil the outcome but again I recommend the programme to anyone.

Morning Philip, there are amazing places around the world, fantastic stories of people who tried to escape during wars, it is so interesting. We should spend more time to discover what was forgotten about, or in modern times, what "they" wish to remove from History. It is like they do not wish to reveal all the evil they did to attain their wealth, alas, greed for power will never change and we know what it is all about. It was great for you to visit Colditz, an opportunity in a life time. Perhaps you and Angelina will be able to revisit some time in the future, who knows. Enjoy your sunny days, winter is a season we have to endure, in nature and in our own lives, yet summer is preferred for many reasons. Kind regards.

The determination of the men to try and escape Colditz and their stories always fascinated me too. I hope to one day revisit Germany and explore more of it as we had very little time last time so were limited in what we saw.

Cool story about the glider. My father was in WWII as a tank Commander. Also, he was in France to get some of the treasures back from the you know who, anyway, he had a lot of interesting stories. Love your visit to Germany, BTW. my parents are of German decent.

As you know as mentioned before. I and like my young son now love WW history and OFLAG IV-C is no exception. The castle itself is steeped in over a 1000 years of history. Even and incurable insane asylum for the German nobility.
Certainly a building and place full of history and stories to last a lifetime.

My dad fought in the war in France, England, Germany etc. He sent home so many pics, but my mom , who didn't understand the significance of them, let us look at them and lost most of them. Sad. I rem a lot of them. I went over on 50th anniversary and visited many sights. He went in on the second wave of DDay. We are in Georgia USA.

Then there is Escape from Colditz Windfall TV documentary. Also Escape from Colditz! The British plan to Glide out of Colditz castle. I’ve seen them all and recommend them.

Have you been able to trace WWII history to your chateau? On Guernsey, my family's home was taken over by German Officers -- with an elderly spinster cousin forced to live in the basement for the duration of the war. After Guernsey was liberated, an inventory was made and the family was rather shocked that the damage was minimal -- more wear and tear.
