He froze to death.... in a lava cave. Only Scanlan.
Grog, the dumbest person in the room, was the smartest one there. Only he respected Scanlan's choice when everyone else tried to convince him to stay, likely for the reasons Scanlan listed. The rest of them either tried to guilt him for wanting to walk away from adventuring to be a father or insulted his reasoning. Bless his heart Grog truly did see Scanlan as his best friend and only wanted him safe and happy. Shame the rest couldn't see it that way.
That's the thing about Grog, where as everyone else is logic and reasoning and whenever there are 2 conflicting reasons to do or not do something. Grog is emotion, do what feels right, and Scanlan knew what felt right for him, that was what matters
I mean Vax also encouraged him to go with Kaylie. He just didn't want to see someone he held so dearly lie to himself
I think if Vax has been more open with his feelings, the situation could of happened on different terms. But in hindsight Scanlan leaving brought some changes to Vax and Vex and with their changes it affected Percy and Keyleth. Grog loves Pike and Scanlan so he only ever wants whats best for them, even if it means being seperated for a time.
Scanlan's character development was so organic, if this wasn't dnd I would consider his character to be brilliantly written.
In the whole campaign THIS was definitely the hardest encounter Matt ever threw at someone. And Sam (in my opinion) solved it without even the need for a roll.
He did roll a 30+ persuasion, and she failed with a 1 in her attack anyway.

When Sam talked himself out of the fight was so awesome. You can see how everybody is thinking "That fucker did it".

So good! And he's totally right... Vox machina didn't know him and none of them knew Kaylie. While it was a mistake for them to bring Kaylie to help him come back, it was the only way to bring him back. The party goes through all the possible methods of getting him back- 'stop lying to yourself', 'we went mad trying to bring you back', 'you're a bigger man than me', 'we're all terrible people' etc, and he has a response for them all. His only choice was to go and meet Kaylie for real and take care of her. Grog doesn't try to stop him, because Grog knew Scanlan the best. They spent the most time together, they laughed together, and they whored together... the "what was your mother's name" "juniper" broke my heart even more than that one.
@@petersenior5432 you're right there but I absolutely loved Pikes response when he tries to apologize which was that he was in the same boat as them when it comes to not knowing everything about them using the same question which was he didn't know Pikes mother and he[Sanlan] is in love with her
The conspiracy theory/ Irony to me would be that he did know her parent's name, but in the moment he wanted Pike to vent out everything she didn't get to when he left. Also for Ashley it was a pivotal moment in a story in which she wasn't there for, His death twice, and Scanlan awaking. If she was there, I don't think Scanlan leaves that way and perhaps sneaks out by leaving a letter to her and grog.
1:14:50 Grog really melts my heart by being the only person to ask Scanlan about his mom. While everyone else gets angry, Grog admits he kinda failed his gnomish friend by not knowing
He remembered why Scanlan left.
I love when scanlan is talking to Kaylie after finding out she's his daughter, Travis is nodding his head the whole time like "yes. Say that."
I love when they 'learn' that Kaylie is Scanlan's daughter, the players already know but the characters don't and their characters are played perfectly
I will say, in Dnd, it can be so hard to not to do, to not meta game

By far the best interaction I’ve heard from Sam Reigal. In second was the “we’re gods” and third was the jug of Mayonnaise

Sam Riegel is a superb actor. I am no expert but, anyone who can act, make you believe their character and feel the moment is good. Sam exemplifies this more than anyone else I have seen. Bravo sir.
Great performance from Travis as Grog when he saw Scanlan body being carried by Vax. At the time I really felt that pain through his eyes.

Omg... Sam Riegal... You glorious bastard. This is one of the most amazing Critical Role edits I've seen so far. I love Scanlan. And shout out to Travis as Grog when he found out Scanlan was dead ( 54:32 ), he made me feel it. And he made me cry. I love this show SO much!
Honestly, more then scanlan's entire "who's my mother" speech, is when Percy absolutely FINISHED him when he came back, asking "what's her mother's name? ...it's Sibyll."

Eh. I thought it was childish. It felt like Percy was still trying to get one over on Scanlan. And that's just a dick move. I do believe Scanlan knew Sibil's name, he just want didn't want to play in Percy's game.

@@scarlightemperor3410 And good on him for that. Though it's moments like that, that make me be less favorable towards Percy. I love all of them. But it just puts him lower.
@@Hudson_Melpomene He was a bit of a dick back then. He seems to have gotten over that part of his personality. I met him a couple times at conventions back in the day during LARPs, and he was a real prima donna, but I think he's gotten over himself.

The question that will forever live in Critical Role infamy. Possibly one of the top three most likely CR quotes to elicit an emotional reaction in a fellow fan; the others (arguably) being "We're practically gods" and, inversely, "And every day that raven comes to visit".
And "Fix him", "I wish I could've done more", "It's called diabetes", "the type of man I want to marry someday", "Hey, guys… We’re friends, right?" "Worse, family". Loads of great quotes.
This feels like the 'Offer me money' moment in Princess Bride except inside out-- a character who carries a joke isn't funny anymore because the joke has teeth in it. So good.
Don't forget "I should have told you, it's yours"

This was a great performance. Brought me to tears during Scanlan's final conversation with his friends.
"I am sorry I didn't know that..." I broke at that moment.
Lets just all enjoy the "i can teach you about breath control" Was the first sentence he said to his dauther :D
The powerful emotions you conjure with your voice acting and theatrics have made these characters REAL! Vox Machina has taken a life of its own.

The reveal at 0:12:00 and the expressions on the players' faces as it clicks, it's just priceless.

This one was actually the fastest one I've done. There aren't that many Kaylie-Scanlan scenes and most of them were fresh on my mind - also there was so much already logged on the wikia. And, you know, I had to filter my emotions into something ;)

i am crying like a baby and the video ended 10 minutes ago... i just finished episode 16 on the first campaign so i cant even imagined what would have happened if i watched this after witnessing the whole journey and getting attached even more to the party and CR crew...

Just watched the whole video, for the record I haven't watched any of season 1, so my reaction to all this is:

I love everybody reaction when kayliee reveled she was scanlan’s daughter
I’m sorry but every time I watch Scanlan leave it always annoys me that Vex tells him to be with his daughter and then when he listens to her she acts like she’s been betrayed
Watching this after episode 114... oh man...
the epilogue makes all this so much better
When the cast is actually sad for their own characters...
I love the bit where Scanlan's old troupe just empties out the keep.
Something even worse about when Scanlan left was that they invaded his privacy yet again by scrying on him multiple times, they shouted and harassed him for leaving then spy on him after he leaves not giving him any time truly alone.
This is my favorite 100 minutes from campaign 1 without any doubt

I hate how everyone keeps arguing the wrong points to get him to stay and then are sad when he leaves. Vax: You have contributed before (doesn't mean he's not out of his league now) Vex: You should be a better dad (great, so he's leaving) Percy: You're both shitty people (Yes, but she's his shitty person) Keyleth: idek but it wasn't "stay with us"
I thought the same thing when I watched it. Vax/Keyleth didn't actually hear what Scanlan was saying. They just kept trying to make it about themselves when this had nothing to do with them at all and that really irked me.

I kinda think that this would've been served better by having all of the crew leave so that the reveal could be made in secret.
That would depend on whether or not the players can separate what they know from what their characters know, which the critical role cast has proven they are capable of time and time again.
That whole purse thing, 2600GP does not fit in one purse mate, he could have given her one of the like 8 purses it was in...
