  • Hi! I am back to talk about the 30-year-old book by Robert Jordan "The Eye of the World." I have watched the tv show adaption by Amazon Prime "The Wheel of Time" and thought it was about time I go to the original source material.

As someone who grew up reading the books and experienced the devastation of RJ dying before finishing the series and then the joy of Brandon Sanderson picking up the mantle, it was a 23 year experience so I hope TV watchers understand a little of why we're very protective. The best thing about the show is that it's bring new readers to the series.

the Wheel of Time is such a rereadable series, it's amazing. All the details you pick up on on subsequent rereads. Ie Rand's channeling or touching the source throughout the book. First time being when fleeing trollocks in the beginning and he's urging Bella to run so Egwene doesn't lag behind, noting how his skin feels like fire and his bones like ice

So happy you enjoyed the books. I’m on my third read through of the series and it only gets better everytime you go through it. Picking up more details you missed and thinking of characters in different ways. One of the hardest things about Robert Jordans writing is the descriptive style, if you enjoy that- you’ll love this series.
I also love the tv show, being a book reader first there’s a lot more things I wish were done differently but overall I think they really captured the characters (besides Perrin) which was the most important part. There’s so many things RJ wrote about and connecting them all in two seasons just wasn’t going to happen, but getting the group together again at the end of season 2 gives them the best options going forward!
I’d love to watch a book 2 Vlog or at least some thoughts on the book! Like I said m about to finish EOTW and will be starting TGH soon!

As a decades long book fan I have had my issues with the show, but I also really love it! It's important for me to remember that they are adapting the whole series, not book by book, and that changes how they show and foreshadow things.
I'm so glad you found the show!! They left the important ending of book 3 out of season 2 and from what they've said about the next season i don't think that ending will happen until at least season 4 of the show, because what happens isn't relevant until later in the books. So it might be hard to wait until after season 4 to read books 3 and 4...
I always disliked Nyneave, lol. But the actress is doing s great job, as are all of them! Such perfect casting (except Thom, but I like that actor anyway, lol) Rand, Mat and Egwene are my favs in the books!
I'm always on the lookout for more Wheel of Time content, so I get it!

Hopefully Nyneave’s character develops but the actress does such a good job I can’t help but like her. Also, I’m still nervous to read book 3 in case of spoilers but we’ll see…

I would hope so as far as foreshadowing, but I’m highly doubtful on that level of planning after watching the Jordancon panel with Uno, in addition to everything else they haven’t paid off(Perrin fridges wife), also rules even within the show that they broke. There’s some cool effects.

Book 2 and 3 are actually season 2 of the show. Book 4 will be season 3 i guess. After you finish whole Wheel of Time series, i'd recommend exploring Cosmere Lore (especially Mistborn series and Stormlight Archives series) by Brandon Sanderson who also co-authored later Wheel of Time books after original author, Robert Jordan died. Robert gave him several outlines to continue Wheel of Time series and Brandon managed to grant his wishes to complete Wheel of Time series. Brandon is the most influential modern fantasy writer, on the same level as George R. R. Martin who authored A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones was adapted from that).

You remind me of me of when I first watched The Dresden Files show on TV. I loved the show and then started reading the books. For awhile, I sort of maintained equal love for both the books and the show even though they were different, but after reading all of the Dresden Files books, I realized the show, while a rather credible try, is actually not that good and certainly compared to the breadth of what's in the books, it suffers in comparison. My *opinion* is that as you get further into The Wheel of Time books, especially Books 2-4, you will start to feel how much the show suffers in comparison despite the good work that the actors have done with their characters. They are really shorting some of the character development and the interesting events that happen in the books as well as altering much of the narrative to have a different meaning and I get the feeling that it's only going to continue to diverge further if the show continues.

I was stunned just how bad the series was, they clearly had troubles in production, I gave season two a try, and... I had enough. Writing the show around Moraine instead of Rand was a big mistake, he barely gets any screen-time, he's the Dragon Reborn! can you imagine if we followed the story through Gandalf instead of Frodo?.. I decided to start the books halfway season 2, I finally finished all 14 books; top 3 fantasy read of all time in my opinion, and was genuinely surprised the show got a season 2, it got so many things wrong, giving Perrin a wife, the Dragon Reborn can be anybody, to create fake tension, fake deaths, cheap CGI and fight scenes, it looked goofy... Atleast the show did one thing write; it made me read the source.

Welcome! I read the books first but I love the show. If you want to go into season 3 unspoiled, i recommend stopping after the great hunt because book 3 will spoil some things that haven't happened yet, and also lore and magic system elements that haven't been explained yet. However you should totally read New Spring. It's a prequel set 20 years earlier about Moiraine, Siuan and Lan. One note about it: the show timeline is different from the book timeline. Moiraine is about 30-40 years younger in the books, so she's in her 20s in New Spring (and so is Siuan)

If this show piqued your curiosity enough to read the books then I guess it accomplished one good thing. If I may I would like to make a suggestion to you. Please get the original audio books of the wheel of time is narrated by Michael Kramer and I believe her name is Kate Redding? If you like Rosamund Pike I believe you would love these 2 actors who through the use of their voice acted the hell out of that series. I own all the books and have read them many times but this past summer did not feel like investing so I used the audiobooks and it was such an experience. Like many in your chat I would encourage you to read further sense I do not believe the Amazon series will go past season 3.

I feel this so hard. I am also late to the book party. Decided to start with the show as well since book fans are always nitpicky. I'm guilty of it - I admit. I bitched about the Percy Jackson adaptations due to being a big book fan. Great decision as I love the show. I have finished the audiobook of Eye of the World and am almost halfway through the audiobook version of the Great Hunt. Really liking the books as well. Loving that as I read/listened through as I can see why some show changes were made and it helps me appreciate both more. The adapted/shortened "Weep for Manethren" in the show was so good, I love it just as much as the longer book version. Looking forward to S3/book 3.

I found the casting to be perfect and even though there are some drastic changes, most of them I either can deal with/understand, or I actually liked! (there's only been like, two I seriously disliked, but I'm not sure if those are because they had to rewrite a lot of script because of Barney's departure from the cast.)
Your comment about not knowing who the Dragon was while watching S1 was something I, as a book lover, really liked about the show. It was a great way of keeping the reveal for new viewers, and it actually got me wondering if they were going to do a HUGE twist and have someone else be the Dragon. Nynaeve may grow on you over time. I don't believe that these are spoilers that weren't covered in the Eye of the World in the earliest chapters already; Nynaeve's problem is that she was made the Wisdom of Emond's Field far too early in life. She was the youngest Wisdom that anybody in the Two Rivers had ever heard of. Consequently -- she's got a MASSIVE chip on her shoulder. She was far too competent an herbalist healer to not be made a Wisdom (she effectively performs bloody miracles sometimes) and at the same time she's too young to be easily taken seriously by the Women's Circle or by the Men's Council. So she's more prickly than a cactus pear in a drought on a particularly dry day in summer because of that.

How curious- I’m just reading the physical books because audiobooks aren’t really for me, and I happened to stumble upon the method of narrating the story to myself in my best impression of Rosamund Pike’s Moiraine, because that’s how she sounds in my head and in my headcanon, she’s kind of the one narrating the story anyhow 😂

As much as I loved season two of the WOT tv show, I must say the book is even better. I read The Great Hunt a year before the TV series started, which was important to my experience. The Great Hunt takes some sharp left turns away from the Lord of the Rings stuff and blows the whole world open in such an exciting way. This happens again and again as you get deeper into the books. But that first exciting jolt comes about halfway through The Great Hunt.

The original cover of book 1 has an interesting story. There is an extra character, there was supposed to be a forth boy that went with them, but RJ (maybe with his wife's urging) decided to merge them together into Mat.
My honest opinion on the show is that it was good, and I liked it. But I was also disappointed. The books are not perfect, by any stretch (Except book 4, which is still one of my favorite books of all time) but I felt like the show could have made changes to improve the book but missed the mark. For example, I liked the changes to Rand+Mat's journey (first, the book version wasn't too long and second I didn't know who would be a darkfriend on their path). I didn't like Perrin having a wife he kills or a "love triangle" with Eqwene.
Book 3 has *significant* parts left out of the show. Like, the entire back end of the book. I don't know if they mean to cover it later, or cut it altogether. If you're looking to keep the show unspoiled, I'd stop at 2.
All the characters take turns as my favorite characters. Mat particularly takes a while to shine.
I hope you enjoy the books and/or show.

Its interesting that the "Who is the dragon reborn mystery" beat actually worked for you. Especially since most fans really did not like it... I guess from a non reader perspective its fine?
(I default to the 'the book is always better camp' but the stories I first consumed via visual medium before seeking out the text version have always become stand outs. Love that there are several people who'll be similarly drawn into the World of the Wheel of Time.)
I'm curious why you found Mat annoying in season 1. Is there something specific that rubbed you wrong?

I've read the book series nine times...and I really enjoyed your perspective.
I "liked" Season One. I wish that they (Amazon Studios) would've allowed for a 90 minute/2 hour episode one...for it really needed it. The showrunner filmed it, but they wouldn't give them the time needed for the beginning of the story...for I felt S1:E1 was too rushed, before they went on their adventure.
The last two-three episodes were messed up, because of the actor playing Mat, didn't come back to the set...after the second shut down during COVID...so they scrambled to rewrite the scenes...having Mat stay behind. Also, COVID protocol...and not allowing that many extras on set...so the ending was anticlimactic IMO. But, I give them a pass, and don't complain about the season, for it was out of their control.
BTW, that cold open with Rand's mother, is one of the BEST cold opens of ANY TV show, ever. Amazing.
I agree, that the Mat they have for S2 is better, and really feel that he's the best version of Mat going forward for the the adaptation of the books. So, it all worked out.
Really happy that you found the books thru the TV series. That makes sense, and I'm so happy that you are loving your journey going forward.
They have planned eight seasons for the fifteen books (fourteen regular novels, and one prequel). SO, when you finish the TV series, you will still have a lot of content to consume.
Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts on The Eye of the World. Also, please to a Reading Journal for your reading of The Great Hunt. Looking forward to watching you grow to love the show and the book series even more and more.

The character changes were some of my biggest gripes about the show. Yes, Mat is unlikeable in the early books. He does not get better in book 2. He gets worse. But he is also one of the most realistic characters. He's a wise guy torn away from home and he whines about it. And then he is influenced/quasi possessed by the dagger which amplifies those negatives. But he is not the layabout cheat and sneakthief from a broken home the show makes him out to be.
Yes, I'm a man, so seeing the three young men I related to the most when I read these books again and again being so negatively portrayed and sidelined in the show makes me upset. I'm glad you are enjoying the show and I hope you enjoy the books as much as I still do.

How do you hate Book!Nynaeve for her anger issues, but love her on the show? On the show, she confronts Lan with a hand on her knife, because he did the highly suspicious and threatening act of... walking in through the front door of an inn that is open for business. She is hostile to Moiraine for absolutely no reason, that is later revealed to be, because the White Tower, which has been around for 3000 years, might have discriminated against her teacher years ago, so she's all kinds of hostile to Moiraine. She stays hostile despite Moiraine's best efforts to get on her good side. Then, she attacks Lan while he is tending to the wounded Moiraine, refuses to treat Moiraine unless Lan agrees to do what she wants, and then, refuses to tell him what she is doing. Then she does nothing useful except Healing a bunch of people by accident, and driving away Machin Shin by accident. They get to Fal Dara and she stalks Lan and then gives him the secret of tracking Moiraine, which was just really really stupid (how did Lan never notice her tell when he has been traveling with her for years? How did Moiraine leave a trail for Nynaeve to follow, when she was carried unconscious into, and out of, the ruined city by Lan before Nynaeve found them? How does a trail she left on horseback that Nynaeve followed, relate to the trail she will be leaving on foot? Why can't Lan just track Rand, a 20 year old farmboy who knows nothing about the environment he is traveling through?). And then she saves Egwene from the channeling death.
That's it That's all Nynaeve does. She is really mean to Moiraine, even though Show!Moiraine did not insult her in public, was open and honest about what she wanted from the Two Rivers kids and why she was there, saved Tam without being asked, and openly warned Nynaeve about the dangers in Tar Valon. She also was upfront and honest with them about the plan for going to the Eye of the World. She did not try to manipulate them and let them make up their own minds, and respected Rand's wishes to hide his identity and survival. Nynaeve has much less reason to be mean to her on the show, but treats her worse.
Meanwhile, in the books, Moiraine calls Nynaeve "child" in public, when Nynaeve is already struggling to have people taken seriously (when Rand & his father arrive in the village in the beginning, half the people are complaining about Nynaeve being too young for her job, and then the cool celebrity visitor calls her "child" in public - she has a damn good reason to be mad about that). Moiraine carries the kids off without their parents' knowledge or consent, and no one really knows why. Hell, it's Loial who reveals that they are ta'veren, not Moiriane. By the end of book 1, she has not even told them that she is looking for the Dragon Reborn. She tells Rand at the Eye of the World, with Nynaeve present, that the coins she gave him, Mat & Perrin were both trackers to be able to find them, and roofies to make them listen to her. Nynaeve knew about the trackers first, because that's how Moiraine was following them. Moiraine is the one who brings them to Shadar Logoth, while on the show, it was all Lan's doing, and Nynaeve didn't even know about that.
Nynaeve herself in the books shows a lot more competence. She is a very good healer, and we can see from things like keeping her hands clean and not keeping the wounded all in one place to minimize the risks of infection, that she knows her stuff. We discover how much she cares about the Two Rivers kids and she left on the journey to find them, after making arrangements for someone to cover her duties. She assures Lan that Moiraine is perfectly safe being treated by her, and she tells Moiraine exactly what she is giving her. Later, she plays an important role in rescuing Perrin and Egwene from the Children of the Light and even realizes that Egwene is there, by recognizing her horse, and takes additional risks to make sure they have enough horses for everyone to make a clean getaway. She comforts Egwene when she freaks out hearing about the Dark One appearing in the boys' dreams, she starts making practical lists for their journey from Caemlyn, and she deliberately acknowledges Rand, Mat & Perrin as men, because of the danger they are willing to face to save the world. She doesn't stalk Lan through the town prying into his private business, she goes to him openly and admits her feelings.
Even on the issue of channeling, when Moiraine tells Nynaeve that she can channel, it's devastating, because Nynaeve is very good at foretelling the weather, which is incredibly important to a pre-industrial farming community, and at curing illness and treating injuries, as a result of her years of study and hard work to master these disciplines. She studied and worked hard to learn these subjects, and it paid off, because she's right about the weather (until the Dark One started interfering) and everyone she treats gets better. Except now Moiraine has just told her that it WASN'T her own natural knowledge that helped her figure out when it was going to rain or when spring was coming, it was the One Power simply telling her. People were not getting better because Nynaeve gave them the right medicine, but because the One Power was fixing them without her realizing it. Moiraine is basically saying that all of Nynaeve's accomplishments, the skills that won her the position of Wisdom at an unbelievably young age, were unearned, and things that were just handed to her by an accident of birth. You'd be pissed too. Hell, by calling her a channeler and pointing out Moiraine's own ability to sense her, Moiraine is implying that the Aes Sedai have more to do with what Nynaeve has achieved, that it's their gimmick that has stolen all the meaning from her life.
Nynaeve has "anger issues" because she's facing really horrible things throughout the whole book! Before she ever appears on the page, people are talking about her frustration because the weather is unnatural. The village is being threatened by monsters, and she can sense it unconsciously. Then it is attacked, and people she has known all her life are hurt and killed and then four teenagers she used to babysit, whose injuries she has treated, are taken away by a woman who publicly insulted her. Then on her journey, everything she encounters is bad - the sunken ferry, the Fade coming into their inn, the inn being burned right after they leave, the Children of the Light targeting the group, because they are with an Aes Sedai, and then Moiraine bringing them to a cursed & haunted ruin that doesn't actually keep the Trollocs from following them like she said it would, and then the group gets split off, and Moiraine makes it clear she DGAF if Egwene survives as long as she can get the boys to safety. These are all things that Nynaeve gets angry about, because she cares about people, the Two Rivers folk the most, but people in general as well. Nynaeve does not go catatonic or shell shocked at horrible things or disasters or suffering, she gets mad and does something. Except this is too big for her to do anything about, for the first time in her life. Anger is a very normal and natural thing for people in general and Nynaeve especially to be feeling in her position. But you know what you don't see? Nynaeve brandishing knives at people, Nynaeve hurting people, or lashing out or behaving in any way unconstructively or obstructively.
Book Nynaeve is an awesome and amazing character and one of the worst things about the show is not the changes from the books, but how they have systematically stripped her of all her power, status and accomplishments, as well as most of her personality.

It DOES make me cringe to see annotations on a novel, but I love that you love it.
WoT is a series that will probably benefit from this level of investment, Jordan is a MASTER of foreshadowing, and this is why so many book fans dislike the show. It does spectacle okay, the performances are great and isolated scenes are cool... BUT it fails to capture the magic. (both figuratively, and literally with the REFUSAL to include the binary nature of the system, as if it is too controversial to suggest masculine and feminine are real concepts that are different from eachother and complimentary. I GENUINELY think that the show runner reads FAR too much into it as if it's some rad fem anti-trans statement. This concern could EASILY be fixed with trans characters being unable to reach the source bc their body does not align with their soul, or some such. Because in WoT souls are very much gendered, as each "thread" infinitely repeats its patten in... the... wheel... of... time... :P)
I think all of the toxicity would pretty much disappear is the show runner and show fans would just... concede the criticisms.
That the show does not closely follow the books.
That rather large liberties have been taken that transform it into an "inspired by" rather than an adaptation.
That the show runners clearly have ideological reasons for many of their choices, and that this may not match Jordan's vision or many of his readers expectations.
That pretty much defuses all of the tension simply by acknowledging reality.
The show simply made the mistake of setting expectations (of an adaptation) and not delivering on those.
On Egwene and Rand, I think part of the point in the books is that it's not meant to be.
It's a childhood romance. It COULD work out but it's certainly not some mature relationship. They're simply somewhat infatuated with their fantasy of each other (Rand substantially more so than Egwene)
This is one element that the show SERIOUSLY screws up. Making Rand's entire arc for two seasons about what Egwene wants is... very bad. If that had been done to a widely popular female protagonist, I don't think the critics would be so easily dismissed.
I would disagree with anyone saying the show captures the characters.
I don't think that's true for literally any of them. In season 1, Mat was my standout, and he was SUBSTANTIALLY darker (which isn't good imo) In season 2... Egwene and Nynaeve had their moments... but largely miss the point. (Nynaeve practicing with swords? The more you read, the angrier this might make you. Egwene somehow rescuing herself from the a'dam ALSO undermines an ENORMOUSLY important theme from the series... that even the greatest individuals need help from their friends. It's the lesson they labour for Rand, the literal dragon reborn who is SO terrifyingly powerful that men have been slaughtered for thousands of years and false dragons spark continent spanning civil wars. But for Egwene? She don't need no man. It's a GENUINE shame and while those scenes are cool they undermine her character ENORMOUSLY in the long run. To the point I'm not sure the show runner or writing room have read past the first handful of books)
