    Stream / buy 12" Vinyl Earth EP: ffm.to/reflect
    A story of ice and reflections with the second part of my Earth EP in collaboration with the great video artist Jip Mus.
    Max Cooper:
    The project began as so many others at the start of the lockdown period when everything was brought under inspection for all of us. And as often is the case, my writing process became a sort of balance, against my collapsing world of touring and new uncertainties. There's something about focusing on a simple chord progression and the feeling it contains which often puts things into perspective.
    What developed was the Earth EP, with a focus on the beauty and processes surrounding us, and our role amongst the system. I started chatting to Jip about the project and he had the great idea of linking the reflections of the music to those of ice and its role in reflecting light from the sun, linking in footage from his visits to Svalbard, research lab imagery of ice crystal formation from Wenting Zhu, and his own ice formation experiments. Big thanks Jip for the beautiful work, I hope you enjoy it too.
    Jip Mus:
    The film is choreographed by a natural source; change of temperature. I was amazed by all the different shapes and movements water would make, a continuous dance of shifting into states of aggregation.
    I got to visit Svalbard last November for a photo series and I was shocked to feel the rise of temperature in the Arctic so vividly.
    When I first heard the music that Max sent me it gave me a melancholic feeling, the same feeling I felt seeing this island slowly disappear. I hope this film helps us understand the value of these places and that we need to preserve them to slow down the rapid changes of temperature on our planet.
    I would like to thank Wenting ZHU from Beauty of Science (research institute from China), Cecilia Blomdahl (drone operator from Svalbard) and of course Max Cooper for working together with me on this film.

    Beautiful.
    Listened to the music, watched the video and enjoyed the natural processes that are shown.
    Then made me think about how all the beautiful natural events in the universe happen regarding we humans exist or not.
    It made me think about what we have discovered (albeit understood or not) and what not.
    It made me wonder why these events happen the way they do.
    It makes me feel small and vulnerable as a human being.
    Then I read the title and I completely understood and agreed on it.
    Thank you for this masterpiece!

    I like how the harmony is reflected in quasi random nature-like, industrial or more abstract effects. I get an impression that the pure form reaches something beyond itself, the real world. Same with the video content, that emphasises the abstract dimension of natural phenomena.

    • @imcpan2590
      @imcpan2590 Před 4 lety

      The harmonic scheme is also analogous to a seed on which the crystal is growing. It indicates some general directions, so called "boundary conditions" inside which some more spontaneous and random activity develops.

    • @imcpan2590
      @imcpan2590 Před 3 lety

      You mean something like "musical" or "crystal" DNA?

    • @imcpan2590
      @imcpan2590 Před 3 lety

      Yes, I heard an opinion that crystals can be considered as a very simplified, limited form of "life". (The prions and viruses would be on a next complexity level). One interesting thing is the DNA always remain hidden, I mean: it's seen only in concretisation, never appers in it's abstract form as pure potential. This refers to the music as well: you always hear basic rythm and harmony reproduced with the use of some concrete instrument that bears colour, loudness structure, shape and more qualities. And it's nice when the "DNA" is something you can progressively deduce while listening to the music, like finding the symmetry of a snowflake (it doesn't refer to this particular song, here the base theme is exposed from the begining but you can imagine what would remain after removing chords and the beat).

      Meaningful is making machines going the way you choose, making art is meaningful if you make for your own assend, but then you are a true artist, not showman, you go where maybe no one can understand what you doing and first why!,

    I dont get it, you make some of the best IDM music, very "intelligent" and exelent crafted synth samples and glue staff in track arrangment. I know what im talking, been tthere editing for hours, days and months, making tons of used tracks and samples making like dye sequencers with tpns of automation patches just to see where im going.. I dont save my instrument and other soft racks in live, i love to experiment, so every song has a fresh and clean start to evolve.
    U dont make music like i do 90s and trough middle of 2000s. I learn all i can find about hard staff, than i mpve to learn whole music theory, not just West culture, i learn all scale, and started playing piano, guitar and drums. Than i learn that i dont want to play instrument every day just to jeep my muscle memory ready..yes its easier to play it live instruments, but you must work phisically every day.
    I just love to learn new stuff only to make my brain happy every day. Im profesional fireman and that is not buildingg my brain big and happy fat. After i finih music theory and learn ti play 3 instruments i came back to my wonder box just to see that i didnt lost touch, band i didnt lost it.. Now im coding in Python, not for money or to show off. Didnt do that for music too, all great stuff are well behind me not forgotten but not saved and never published, u dont have patience to perfect the whole mix ( because i do whole wiring and instruments for every project from clean start, and thats what i love, to find new ways and to make cool little experimental thatt satisfi my hunger for knowlage, dont care about no one, you can hear me only live what i know.. I have Adam 7X with Sub i bouth after few years of using it. You can hear everything on Adam monitors, love them, can seperate and track all in songs i liste on them.
