This scene was one of the first reasons I fell in love with this series and actually like the concept of anime. Yowamushi Pedal is the first anime I fell in love with and this scene is one of the reasons why. I'm crying when I rewatched this again because Naruko and Onoda's friendship is the best thing in the series. I gave this anime a chance because of their dynamic and this scene became a reason for me to love the series because of that dynamic. Naruko and Onoda were my ultimate BroTP, y'all.
Onoda's greatest strength in cycling comes from the motivation and inspiration he gets from his friends and his will to catch up and not fail what they entrusted him. That's what made him win the Inter-High. Now, going back, it was Naruko that first gave him that kind of motivation. He's the one to show that riding can be fun and it's so satisfying to catch up. He's the first one to actually entrust something to Onoda and gave him the push and motivation to win the climb. To be honest, it's also Naruko that gave Onoda the final push to join the club in the first place and there, Onoda found the friends he have always wanted. It just makes me cry because their friendship was golden and just downright underrated. Naruko loves to stand out and surprise everyone, so he won't reveal one of his techniques to anyone let alone teach them how, but he did for Onoda. He believed in him even if Makishima, the one who is Onoda's biggest inspiration now, didn't. Also, when the series progressed and they started to focus on different dynamics, you can still see Naruko's care and genuine respect for Onoda and he'd always support him even if his support is just shown in the background.
This makes me cry out of joy because I remembered how good it was, but part of me is sad since we rarely get to see that on year 2, specifically most in Glory Line. To avoid some spoilers, I'll make it brief, Naruko went from
"Are you watching Onoda-kun?" ..... "And maybe you, too Hotshot" to
"Hotshot" only... Imaizumi and Onoda had great moments together, but it's somehow sad that Naruko's treatment to Onoda now was merely for comic relief. It's all for "Hotshot" now. I can't be the only one that noticed Naruko's dynamic with Onoda changing from that treasured brotherhood in year 1 to just something really not as deep and bonded club mates. Naruko now even went far to not acknowledging Onoda as someone dear to Imaizumi as well because he so wanted to be Imaizumi's first friend (though it clearly is Miki in the first place lol). I was just downright offended by that, tbh. It's just a sad reality that growing up means growing apart from people who once was very close to you.. There was that arc where Onoda was genuinely thinking of Naruko, but the moment they catch up, it's only Imaizumi whom he noticed... I know I'm overreacting and being oversensitive now, (plus maybe there was a curse that anyone who'd wear the #3 tag would be obsessive over their rivals lol) but it's darn heartbreaking that my favorite friendship turned out to be like that.

Good points. But I didn't even notice it myself. I guess everyone watches anime for different reasons and you seem to enjoy the relationships aspect of it.
What's more amazing with onoda in this battle is his Road Bike is metal which is twice the weight of imaizumi's bike. And onoda doesn't have an air resistance clothes on.
It ain't really double but yeah. According to the manga his bike is 12kg so only 4 kg but still its amazing

Nobita's Tagalog (Filipino) dubber actually voiced Onoda in the Tagalog dub, lol. I watched the Tagalog version back then🤣🤣. That very same dubber voiced Deku in the Tagalog dub too because Onoda and Deku have the same seiyuu.
