  • Catalina is the most widely known of the Channel Islands, and the only one still privately owned. Its fame is the result of the vision of one man, William Wrigley Jr. who bought the island sight unseen in 1919. We chronicle its glory years of movie stars, the Chicago Cubs, and Big Band dancing in the Casino, as well as its struggles to stay relevant today. William Wrigley’s great grand-daughter Alison Rusack and her family tell us about the challenges and joys of keeping his dream alive.
West of the West series available on DvD.

Tim Vail is the Group Vet for Los Caballeros. He grew up on Santa Rosa Island. His family owned it. They also owned the Vail Ranch/including Vail Lake in Temecula Ca. The old bunk house is still there. There is a lot of history on that Island...including the discovery of the remains of giants. Back in 1973 some friends and I leased a 28' Erickson from Newport and sailed over. we hit a school of albacore off the southwest tip where we brought in six each. We had to buy a couple extra ice chests to hold our catch. You can still catch 8 lb white sea bass off the dock there...
    Amazing

I have been fortunate enough to have ridden Catalina on horseback. Philip Wrigley was a member of Los Caballeros, and we do an annual five-day trek on the Island. I have participated in several Outrigger canoe races from Catalina to Newport. Boy Scout summer camp in Cherry Valley. High School grad night dance at the Casino ballroom. Catalina is so amazing. I hope it never loses its charm.

I didn't ride with Philip Wrigley...I ride with "Los Caballeros" a group of riders that Philip Wrigley rode with. Philip Wrigley was an early member of the group. This will be our 80th year riding on Catalina. Philip Wrigley built Rancho Escondido where he raised Arabian horses. It's now used as an event center and has a winery. We board our horses at two harbors, ride over to little Harbor to camp (glamp) We ride to Blackjack (above the airport to spend a night and ride the trails across the north portion of the Island. There used to be a stable in Avalon, but it has been closed many years. With the exception on Conversancy riders, we are the only horseman who ride there. There is a group "Las Caballerias" who also ride every spring. They are the woman riders from our group.

Unfortunately, the dyslexic editor launch the channel that way. We are forever stuck.
