- Often called the Galapagos of North America, the eight Channel Islands lay in plain sight of millions of people off the Southern California coast. Yet few know their names or even how many there are. And fewer still know the fascinating tales of those who have lived, worked, discovered, surfed, dived, ranched, wrecked, or were rescued on these unique and beautiful islands. Told in thirteen different tales.

The book "The Island of the Blue Dophins" changed my life, and I was thrilled to find this video
My mother sent my copy of that book- from circa 1978 for my daughters to enjoy. She remembered how much it meant to me.
I loved that book too! Thanks for the reminder!
The book is so heartbreaking to read as an adult. As a child, it sounds like such an adventure. As a mother, it made me cry. It's beautifully written. It's hard to learn about the true ending of her life. How it continued to be lonely. It's a sad story.
I loved that book too! đ
I'm a Sacramento Native. My home is California, but I never knew these islands existed. This was amazingly cool to watch...Thank you for uploading this video!
I'm Swiss and I never saw any doc about the channel islands in Cali but this will sure not be my last, this doc got me all emotional, from the beginning to the end! What an amazing history, landscape and people there... I hope when I pass, my soul will visit all of the islands before I definitively leave this place, to bathe in the serenity and absolute beauty of this special corner on this earth! Thank you for this upload!
â€
I'm Norwegian, and I feel the exact same way. What a fascinating little nook of history!
You are from Switzerland? From what city? My American Chicago friend married a Bally engineer in Zurich. đ
Exactly. I am interested in natural history, not emotional gushing. đ„șđąđ
Anne, you should try to visit if at all possible. I spent many summers on Catalina Island when I was growing up, and there is just a certain vibration, smell, and feeling there.
Taking that bag of trash to the person who left it âI believe you left this on my islandâ. Epic!
What an enjoyable and educational experience. I appreciate your effort to bring lesser known areas to our attention. I am the richer for these documentaries.
I'm a 2nd generation native Californian, daughter of a migrant farm worker who worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the influx of dust bowl "Okies". In 1964 I boarded a Navy Constellation and flew for the first time in my life. We landed on "The Rock", what many called San Nicolas Island at the time. It was almost completely barren except for the shacks & radar dishes, and the quarters, mess, etc. that supported the workers, both military and civilian. I'd read, "Island of the Blue Dolphins" but couldn't associate the idyllic notion it portrayed, with this sterile looking wasteland around me. Today, seeing the dedication of so many to the restoration and preservation of the islands fills me with gratitude.
This was amazing!! đđđ
Iâm from California, born and raised here, still live here, and love this state so much! But Iâve been beginning to realize how little I know about this place, and how much I want to learn more.
The part that made me particularly emotional was about Juana Maria, the lone woman of San Nicolas Island. I first read the book âIsland of the Blue Dolphinsâ in 4th Grade, and Iâve loved it ever since. I remember my class talking about her history, and even watched a movie adaptation of the book.
I still have a copy of the book, and will reread it from time to time. Iâm not sure what I loved specifically about it as a child (other than it being beautifully written), but it hits way differently reading it as an adult. Now whenever I reread it, it never fails to make me cry!!
I knew practically nothing about the Channel Islands, so this was a great educational experience. I look forward to finding out more about them, and my beloved California in general. đ
What do you like about California? What are the top things you treasure?
I also read and loved that book in 4th grade! đŹđđ
@@SweetChicagoGator weather and geography, definitely! The Mediterranean climate, the beautiful hills & mountains, the trees, and the coastline. So beautiful!! I can easily summarize it with that, but I can definitely give specific details about both categories if asked. đ
I also love and appreciate the diversity in people here- I love how diverse Cali is in terms of ethnic & cultural groups. So because of that, and because I live in capital city region, I love the different types of cuisines you can find. I have a long list of ethnic restaurants I want to go to, lol! I love trying out new cuisines and learning about their origin countries. I mean, food is a type of love language, and you can learn so much about people and their culture that way! (Iâm a total foodie, and I love to cook & bake, love trying out recipes from different countries, so I talk about food a lot. LOL!)
Speaking of food, since California used to be apart of Mexico, itâs pretty easy to find great Mexican restaurants just about anywhere you go. I looove Mexican food! đ€€
âŠand now Iâm really hungry and craving multiple types of cuisines. LOL
@@Ashaliyeva
As a former assistant Chef I love to cook as well and go to ethnic restaurants. Love Mexican and I live in Chicago and we have plenty of Mexican restaurants that are delicious ! Great description you gave of your likes of California geography.
What kind of work do you do? I'm mostly retired, but do a little catering on the side. âïžđđ€
@@SweetChicagoGator nice! Cooking is amazing, I mean, who doesnât love eating good food? Iâve never visited Chicago, but if I ever do, I definitely look forward to trying the pizza. đđ
As far as work, Iâve predominantly been in childcare: mostly as a nanny, and working with elementary school children. But due to a really crappy, lifelong autoimmune illness, Iâve been more or less âhousewifingâ (lol) for the last several years. I still often take care of my loved oneâs kids, and will house sit & pet sit for family & friends, when needed. đ
It's a Time Capsule.
It's very intentional, items are related. They tell a story.
This is an incredible, historic find that can't be hidden from us now.
I woke up and watched this w my coffee in the morning. It was such a good piece. I absolutely adored all of the history and the animals of the Islands. Then you speak of their beliefs and things they've done for many years. It got me emotional.God bless all who were a part of the Islands and writing this piece, it filled my mind and heart w knowledge. đ
I can see Catalina from my house on most days, sometimes so clearly you can practically count the trees.
I worked in the music industry for a good portion of my life, & always knew that Joe Walsh was an exceptional man, by virtue of the fact that he was able to remain in a band with Don Henley for as long as he did! To say that Don is a bigger jerk than Gene Simmons & Ted Nugent COMBINED would be a gross understatement of epic proportions.
Joe's quite the opposite. I'm so glad, & not at all surprised, to learn that he found something as worthwhile as the preservation of Santa Cruz Island to provide a sense of purpose & keep him grounded. It's rare that a man can look back on his life's accomplishments & say that he will leave this world a better place than he found it. Thanks for all you've done, Joe! You're the real deal! đŻđâ€ïž âđŒ

This is such a gem !! Born and raised in Southern California I remember the rehabilitation issues at that time. This documentary is a real find.
I have never seen a documentary about the California islands, only Alcatraz. Thanks for the video!đđșđČ
My only complaint of the video is one of the opening statements. There are 9 islands off the California coast, you forgot Farallon Island, which is further west than any of the Channel Islands.
@@richdiddens4059. Hello. The Farrallon Islands are actually 30 miles off the coast of San Francisco!
Nothing more hilarious than the pure excitement in that archeologist who found the jewelry box lol so cool tho
The story of the bag of trash that had a piece of mail in it was, for me, a very Alice's Restaurant moment.
Beautiful weaving of history and stories through a timeline so diverse. Thank you I loved it!
That's the first document I've seen on the Channel Islands. Thank you.
I loved this! My dad did research from mid60's to '73 on Flathead Lake in MT, that helped with the ban of DDT. There was a dangerous decline in the Osprey population, due to cherry growers using DDT in the orchards. The over spray went into the lake, the fish ingested the DDT,
and soft shell eggs were not hatching. I'm so happy to see areas that were poisoned by DDT come back to natural wildlife. Great job to everyone involved. My dad would've loved to see this.....
Absolutely stunning and beautiful..I was crying my eyes out at the very end for sure
I love that you're keeping your native heritage alive in the way you are each year. Thank you. Thanks to all who are keeping the Channel Islands as they are meant to be. â€
From beginning to end, this is the most beautiful, loving, spiritual documentary I've ever watched. This touches on so many aspects of the Awakening.
Matt Walsh is a Lightworker & I believe he knows it đ«
Matt Walsh was in this?
@@melissaallison8463 Maybe they meant to write Joe Walsh?
You mean Joe walch from the eagles
What a fantastic documentary!
I live on the coast of Ventura County and these are what I call my Islands.
Amazing video and history. I'm a native Californian and had no idea of this history. Thank you for this story!
@HistoryHit KEEP making documentaries! Yâall are in my top 2 for history docs (along with Timeline)!
â€ïžthe Eagles concert story as well. Great documentary! Thanks much!
this was so neat! thank you.đ»
I'm reading island of the blue dolphins with my daughter. fantastic doc
Iâm from California and I didnât know much about the Channel Islands until I saw this. Amazing! Thanks! đ
"If you love the islands, please don't come here"
đ
Really loved this, thank you. I grew up in SoCal but Iâve never been to any of the Channel Islands and I really hope to one day. My family recently spread my parents ashes near Catalina. My dad loved it there. We came close to moving to Catalina when I was in high school.
This was amazing to watch! Thanks so much for sharing this with us. I never knew any of this. The best part was getting the invasive animals off the island. Reintroducing native vegetation and the foxes and The Bald Eagle-wow! Great dedication and love! The Chumash Tribe are such wonderful intelligent people. I am so glad they started this tradition to honor their ancestors!
This is one of the most engaging documentaries I've seen in years. Very, very well done. Inspiring stuff.
ThaNKS FOR SHARING!
Completely and totally awesome!
Thank you! Iâm truly grateful for this documentary and the opportunity to learn about these islands & their history.
What a fantastic documentary! I'm from the east coast and honestly never gave the islands much thought. It was wonderful to learn of the extensive history and see the flora and fauna â€
Loved this documentary. What an amazing time capsule!
Good documentary. Just heard about this island last night and want to visit
Oh when this popped up I gasped!!
Iâm actually somewhat aware of these islands. Iâm born and raised in Santa Monica and Iâve been to Santa Cruz Island, spent the day hiking from Prisoners Harbor to Pelican Bay viewpoint with my Aunt from Minnesota. It was one of the best days!
Taking the ferry over and feeling so small. To the untouched, pristine natureâŠit was AMAZING!
We did some research at the time but neither of us knew THE Joe Walsh is involved in the preservation. Makes us love him ever more! Which we didnât know was possible.
Iâm so grateful to be from here, I tell myself every day and I know how lucky I amâ€
Awesome documentary and visual history. Thanks for the brief look in!
When it comes to conservation in its early days, I recommend listening to Plateau by the Meat Puppets.
Land preservation is so important people need to know and understand about history and family history!
Thank youđđ»
Do we need a better example of "think globally, act locally? And Mr Walsh, so glad you have your peace my friend. Labour with love and the world is your oyster.
It is always important to connect with country. Through the song lines and the knowledge of the land.
Its weird they didn't talk about the Channel Islands Pygmy Mammoth. It was very cool they spoke of the red wood box.
I know the Channel Island exist. Iâm a Californian. NEVER KNEW about its history.
The island the history the geography the people and the Joe Walsh I never knew...Thank You
My wife and I honeymooned on Catalina Island. We toured the backcountry and saw a perspective of what California used to look like before we changed it. To put it mildly. Thank you.
Beautiful đ«¶đđđđ«¶
Thank you. âšïž âšïžâšïžâšïžâšïžâšïž
Thank you for sharing this video, so BEAUTIFUL this video was.
and I am a HUGE FAN OF Joe Walsh and his music, so great to see so many things that I never knew and I am a born and raised California girl at heart.
And I want to add that IT'S A SHAME WHAT HUMANS CAN DO TO THE PLANET!!!
When at UCSB Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz were directly off shore. Wonder if Joe fell in love w them when he lived in Santa Barbara ? The islands seemed part of SB all the while not. I recall a disagreement on the removal of some residents on one of the islands. Great documentary there has been a trend in history to ignore recent history. Like there was nothing from 1700 til now. It's all history from. Geology to now. Thanks. Like the part re the chappel. I have been involved in an old Chapel in N San Diego county. Nice got to use my degree in history it left a great impression on me. I appreciate these guys reverance and excitement of the history. Again thanks Lucky this popped up on u tube.
Thank you for sharing blessings.
Joe, now I know why I always liked you. You are all four Beatles in one man.
Amazing. I recognized Joe Walsh's voice before he appeared.
28:04 There is an abalone pearl on the right top row shaped like a tooth. I found an abalone pearl up on the North Coast that is very similar to this one. I was cleaning a red abalone and it popped out. The mother of pearl on it is a beautiful pink and blue. I thought it might be a tooth from a sea lion or maybe an otter.
What ever became of the original natives that lived there?
They were moved to the mainland. I saw the series on here a year or so ago.
Thank you to all who nurture the marvelous islands that God has gifted us with. I hope to someday be able to actually see the islands in person. I've lived in CA since about 7 years old. It was a very turbulent life. I am a senior now and still live on the CA coast. Visiting the islands is on my bucket list. Thank you for the informative, enlightening documentary
Amazing video. Born in San Francisco and had no idea about the islands.
"California hotel " "California hotel "
"Hotel California " "yeah whatever "
I've been diving around all of the islands off our coast, they're all unique and so interesting. I've hiked on a couple of the islands too, camped on Catalina. Went diving with the Cousteau film crew off Santa Barbara Island when they did a series about the Channel Islands. I hiked San Miguel Island with a relative of the King of San Miguel who lived on the island for a number of years along with his family.
Just when I thought Joe Walsh couldnât possibly be coolerâŠ.
There is an American girl book about a young girl who was on the island across the sea was the mission of Santa Barbara it was a native girl who was left alone on one of the Channel Islands. My daughter and I read it together when she was about 8-10 years old she is 30 now.
Very cool.
I love stories
So glad I watched thisâŠ.thank you.
@ 3:56 Song: "The Way I Am" original by Merle Haggard, a great lyric, great song. đ
The last story. đđ„°â€ïž
I first came to San Nicolas in 1978. US Navy. From Pt. Mugu. The feeling I had when I stepped on the island unique and strong, The military made a big mess of the place. After all this time, I hope things have changed for the better. Good surf. Good fishing. Good abalone. I Would love to go back and clean up the beaches of all the crashed target drones. Bring all the debris back to Pt. Mugu where it came from! AG3 A. Sands . Geophysics dept. Aka the weather office.
Video title should be Joe Walsh and the Island đ lol
Way to represent.
Never heard of CA channel Isles. â€ïž the story of The lone woman on the island, she must have had fantastic bartering and trading skills... Or a great set of eyelashes?!!
Who's the narrator? Joe Walsh??? Wow!
Awesome đđșđžđ
I have History Hits trial and I honestly can't find 99% of the cool videos I find on CZcams on the actual site! WTF!?
Please make the movie about the spirit of Juana Maria!!!!
Love everything Joe Walsh has done.
So amazing that the canoe medicine has been revived.
Sure was!!
When he sold the island to the conservatory I do not think he wanted his peole to be kicked off it. That is so sad.
I guess this is what life in the slow lane looks like.
Wow.
It's good to also read the history of the native tribes who occupied the Channel Islands originally. I saw one documentary about a tribe that believed and claimed there was proof of giants living there once.
"If you love this island for gods sake don't come here." Did he leave the island or does his not love it? Lol
Should have called time team. They would have excavated the box in 3 days
How Californian: a 60's rock star becoming a treasured if eccentric guest.
Cool
I watch many expats in Portugal who are homesteading like you. Many have had the same obstacles in their path, so don't give up. It would be helpful to talk with some of them. Nick and Andrea with Project Portugal have lots of experience, and likely good advice as well. The Newbys are also in their first year, and PipsCast have just been dealing with the same issues as you.
Check in and talk to some, it may be very useful to find out how others are managing.
Good luck and take a good look at all you've accomplished .You should be very proud of what you've done so far!!đ
I helped clean Santa Cruz Island. I live in Ventura/Santa Barbara.
And ppl wonder why California is so nutty...........
Natives while Obama/ Pelosi bring in over 2 Million immigrants with Fentanyl.
Hypocrisy manipulation for Elite lifestyle.
So nice to see Joe giving back to the days of Ol; The manâs a âgiver; gave us unforgettable music and now, expands our knowledge of days gone by=Heart of Gold
"California Hotel" "Whatever" đ„đ”
We went to Catalina Island on weekend pass from Naval base had no reservations slept on the golf course almost got hit w/ balls đ
I wonder where the foxes originally came from.
When was this made? 27 years on the island? From the 70s?
Why pretell do you have to have the music blaring in the back ground. I want to hear the history thanks for making that so hard it hurts. No respect for those who have a hearing loss
Yeah well I'd like to restore my whole city... đ„
Sent to my son
I like the way this shows the clear difference between true conservationist and animal rights activist. We were left to draw out own conclusions based on facts. The activist don't know or care to learn about the reason why something is being done, it's only about the cause.
Self entitled rage & angst vs genuine caring & knowledge.
My Alias: Dear friend, you are lumping together all animal rights activists, without differentiating
between those who do truly find out the facts and act to do just what was done on the island. We
just want to stop cruelty and lack of compassion. I was very moved and impressed by this
documentary, and I live across from the Channel Islands. It was most informative and Kudos to
all the people who got together to restore Santa Cruz to its original state. God bless people with
foresight and caring, it shows that we CAN restore our precious earth when we get together and do
our best.
Although this was an informative narrate of the islands off the west coast a whole portion was left out pertaining to the actions that happened from metal cross posting amongst the Original Native Chumash to the purchase of santa cruz. Thats a lot of time and happenings left out.
"Everyone who opened the boxes later claimed to be haunted before each met unusual and unexpected early demise." Just kidding. Science is real, ghosts and curses aren't. đđđ
This is your brain on drugs! Shows Joe Walsh.
