- This is a demo of the Yamaha PSS-590 from about 1989. It has remarkably professional sounds for it's size an amateurish appearance. Very fun to use, and the inclusion of MIDI in and out is wonderful.

This model blowed me away back in autumn 1993 when I saw and heard it at a concert !!!
I had pss-790 and was great also. Added vector synth and more assignable drum pads. great little sequencer with limited memory
Yep I reviewed the 790 a while back. Great fun synth, and a good affordable alternative for people low on funds or space.
Sounds good and reminds me a bit of the 480 I have like you said ! I’m
Lucky enough to have the 460 , 470 and 480
Ah beautiful vintage! I miss the simplicity. Hey man if you ever wanna do some reviews feel free to put them in my dropbox, happy to publish :) GF
Entirely PCM. All digital. 590 is my ax. Been writing on it since 1990. Great review. More interested in that daunting Roland PDA you sneaked in to show MIDI Mod & Pitch Bend haha. Ok, I'm off to get back to wrestling with my cryptical Casio XW-PD1. Cheers!
That XW-PD1 will keep you busy for months! And it will test your ability to remember long sequences of button pushing :D GF
@@gearfacts SO busy! It has some great sounds in it. After a month, the workflow is finally sinking in 😁🔫
I have a bunch of Portas and casiotones. I've been addicted to portable keyboards since the beginning. 8 love your channel. What a blast!
Thanks G!
Great little keyboard. I might be mistaken but I thought the PSS-590 was PCM not FM. The Advanced Wave Memory used PCM samples to create sounds?
I think he's referring more towards the character of the sound here though
BuickGeek24 ahh ok. Very underrated little keyboards.
You are correct.
I had this one in 1993
And I saw it exactly back then !!! )))
Of course, this is a completely different sound engine and shares the exact same sound chip engine as the PSS 790 and others in that range. Whereas, the predecessors mainly shared the same sort of sound engine sound chip (FM). PSS 580 and 790 was released during 1990. As you’ll also discover with the PSS 790, it has a lot more extra sounds on board in comparison to the 590. What is this device you are using to create the arpeggios and is it quite easy to set up? I’d like to get my hands on a PSS 680 which I proudly owned many years ago and I’d love to mess about with this device creating arpeggios.
I still have one working with a extra keyboard
If some interested contact me
What is the device you’ve put the keyboard through to attain the pitch bend and other?
It is a Roland PMA-5 sequencer :) Gearfacts
Wow what device are you using there might I ask? I’m getting a PSS-795 soon and I’d
I’ve to midi it up with my stunning Genos and get the same type of results like your successfully getting there.
The external sequencer? It's a PMA-5 made by Roland. I've made a couple of videos about it (excellent unit!) Gearfacts
One reviewer on another site said you can pump midi out rhythms to other gear with this unit ...
Yep that's correct, you just have to chose the correct midi channel.
Nice .. how would you compare the pss 480 and pss 590 .. does the pss 480 have the same capabilities ?
justakaduppy Hi there. I think I remember that the 590 could layer two envelopes on a sound whereas the 480 could only do one. That doesn’t mean it’s inferior though, just different.
@@gearfacts Thanks for the reply .. Does the Pss 590 have the same FM editing functions like frequency , modulation , attack , decay etc. ? and can those functions be controlled via midi ?
Yep, the parameters are the same. Good question about the midi, i really don't know. I guess it'd be surprising if it wasn't possible to use midi control. You can still download the manual by googling "yamaha pss 590 PDF" and I'm pretty sure there's a midi implementation chart at the back :) Gearfacts
The 590 has sampled org. instruments sound
The keys size is so small, my finger always in pain after playing it😅 cz I learn it for playing piano. Guess I brought the wrong series
I agree, the keys are no good for any kind of performing really.
but was this the best keyboard of its time (1990's)?
This has s lot of the same sounds as the PSR-300
I keep thinking about sampling my Pss590 to use in a track, but it sounds that Kitch and kiddie lo-fi i just can't bring myself to try and make a track nothing sounds like a real world instrument.
Oh I agree, it’s totally cornball. Built for amusement only :)
When you buy this keyboard
1996
Can I get mine repaired, also need adapter etc
Yep, but it might be cheaper just to buy new one
People from India are always so polite and well mannered when asking for stuff in the comments section.
what is the price
You can get them 2nd hand for about $US75 #gearfacts

FM sounds ?? No it's only AWM samples ...
True, I should have said "FM-sourced sounds" or "sampled FM". But yeah it is what it is. Thanks for watching :) GF
Your sound level is a bit low...
Yeah, he should fix that
New recording setup, fellers, and yep I'll get it ironed out soon. Thanks for the feedback :) Gearfacts
