Triple Play is a favorite tradition here at Missouri Star Quilt Company. Once a month, Jenny, Misty, and Natalie each demonstrate their own unique spin on a favorite block, technique, or template. In this episode, the talented Doan ladies share three fabulous new Square in a Square quilt patterns.
Misty's Hip to Be Square quilt is MADE for pretty prints. These classic square-in-a-square blocks match up perfectly with layer cake squares, allowing Lovestruck by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics to take center stage.
Natalie's Scattered Squares quilt is made with Good Works by Linzee Kull McCray for Moda Fabrics. It features big blocks, little blocks, and lots of fun variety. The layout is flexible, so get creative and make it your own.
Jenny's Surprise Square in a Square quilt is set on point, turning all those squares into diamonds. (The surprise? It's sew easy to do!) The fabric for this quilt is Blossom Lane by Katherine Lenius for Riley Blake.

To hear Jenny say her blocks aren’t always perfect is so refreshing and good to hear! I’m self taught and that’s so nice to hear from my online “teacher”
❤ Jenny is my teacher too
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I remember Jenny said in a previous tutorial, it isn't perfect but, it's finished! And I love that!
This comment needs way more likes🎉
I'm self taught also, she says all the time there are not perfect quilts
I also want to point out that you ladies just do your best and say, "Who cares if it's not perfect?" and the quilts you all make always turn out so BEAUTIFUL! Thank you for being real people. I am self-taught as well and struggle with perfection as a result of my adhd daily, if something doesn't look perfect the first time I want to give up! I get very angry and disappointed in myself if something is not perfect, so watching Jenny and the rest of the MSQC family for a few year's, has helped humble me and kept me from giving up on learning to quilt. It's ok if our seams are not perfectly lined up. Our quilts will still be beautiful and put smiles on people's faces. Thanks for another fun learning experience.
Gotta keep it real! ;0)
Amen to that! ❤️
I now I have made this comment on another video, but . . . the cut in the middle to make the 4 corners - genius!!!
I love the fact that all of you are so relaxed with your sewing. Some other channels are much more fussy. I feel so much better watching you because that is the way I like to be. It is more fun this way in my opinion. No stress just enjoy, ent of making the quilts that my family love.😊❤
These three quilts are perfect to make in winter. They're so bright and cheerful. I love watching you all together. You're happy, funny and different. Merry Christmas🧵🧵🧵🎄🎄🎄
You squared up 2023 ! Loved the blocks. Happy 2024 to all.
The way Jenny added those large corner squares just left me gobsmacked ... what a BRILLIANT way. Definitely going to try that next time. So, you lose a point on each side ... if someone says something take the quilt back! LOVED THIS TUTORIAL! Merry Christmas!!
I love Missy because I can use my layer cake that I love the prints but didn't want to cut them up Christmas Layer cake would be so pretty I been saving a layer cake from The Brady Bunch line with the big flowers I had those flowers in my bedroom in the 70 s when I was a teenager love the other two also thank you ladies triple play gives a change to see different blocks
I love triple play day! Often one quilt will stand out for me because of the fabrics used or the design. This time I love all three equally! My taste in fabric lines, and such pretty, fun quilt patterns! I can’t decide which quilt to make first! What a way to finish a year of beautiful quilts!
I look forward to Triple Play each month. Ladies you are very creative and inspiring
I love Triple Play! I always seem to find a method that works for me. One issue I face is sorting colors within the layer cake. For the future, maybe there could be a bit of discussion about colors.
I make 2 stacks, light or dark. This sounds like a fun conversation. Warm or cool just occurred to me, I'll have to try it.
I hope you put together another Triple Play book for us so these wonderful ideas are all in one spot. Hint, Hint....
Natalie, you are looking awesome! Watching you, I have lost 20 lbs so far!
The Doan girls work so very well together. I love to watch them. Each gal is so creative, and they are all different! I love Triple Play. I, too, think it's time for another Triple Play pattern book😊
I really look forward to triple play day. Your ideas are so great, I won’t live long enough to be able to make all the quilts you show. My bucket list just keeps getting longer. I think I will have to make one or two of each block from your episodes and make a MSQC sampler quilt or 3. You must have quite the assembly line technique (or lots of helpers). Looking forward to seeing what you have planned for next year.
Same for me! Can't decide what to do with downsizing all of my fabric.
This triple play makes it so evident how different your personalities shine through. Love each of them for different reasons, but really love the symmetry of Misty’s work. Natalies is soooo fun and interesting, Jenny’s is quick, no nonsense. Something for every one.
Oh and thanks for fixing Misty’s microphone!! I can hear her really well today 😊
I love how Natalie always loves tiny squares. 1 1/2 in is to small for me. Love her squares
I always enjoy the Triple Plays, but this is my new favorite video. I usually have a favorite of the three, this time I really want to make all 3 quilts. ❤
I love them all, but Natalie always have such an inventive and artistic impact.
Much more complicated and chaotic, but that really appeals to me.
Natalie, I love your new look. You are beaming! Good on you. Your confidence is amazing!
I so agree when Jenny focuses on be the best you can be and just enjoy sewing without stress of being perfect. Always learn so
Much from you 3 Teacher’s. Always always my favorite. You all
Make it fun, restore
Confidence , and say drive on, in so many ways. Thank you so much.
I kept saying WOW when I saw what Jenny was doing for her surprise! Great ideas as always
Perfect idea Jenny for the 2 jelly rolls and the layer cake I just received from MSQC! Thanks so much!❤
I love Triple Play! I love how Natalie's pattern looks so scrappy; I will have to make this one.
Every time I watch triple play I feel I want to make them all!!!! You’re killing me! Not really they just wait patiently on the ‘to do’! Thank you for sharing! ❤
Leave it to Jenny to figure out a cool way to set a block on point….WOW! Can’t wait to sew a block with that technique. Thank you ladies for a great video.
I love the idea of I’m doing it on my next quilt
This solves one of those problems..couldn't cut a fabric called Pioneer Spirit, i bought several years ago.. The print with 1870s rural ladies and children doing fun things as chores..I love it so much and couldn't cut..This would be so great..I bought many of its collection pieces as well, not the level of yardage so strips will be grand..Thank you, been waiting for the right thing that I really like compleated.
As usual, I am drawn to Misty’s design. But Natalie’s scattered design is also lovely (just a bit smaller than Iike).
I don’t know which one is my favorite this time. I want to make them all. Thanks for another fantastic Triple Play.
I love Natalie. Oh to just follow her around one day and tap into her creativity.
I don’t make quilts BUT I sure do enjoy watching y’all making them !!🥰
I love the triple, plays. So fun with the Doan ladies.
I love when all 3 of you dress in solid colors as print clothing plays with my eyes to conflict with quilting fabrics. Love y'all!
Loved all of the quilts but I think Natalie’s is my favorite. Thank you for sharing all these ideas.
Natalie's quilt would be a great scrappy quilt. You've inspired me! Thanks!
I love your channel and you are so kind when you have triple play .
Natalie’s quilt would make a great spy quilt
I just can't say how much I love these ideas. Every month you ladies come up with the best ideas. I want to retire so I can just sew along with you each week. I've been working on my stash so have plenty to work with for many years, lol.
Ohhh wowwww!!! They are all sew beautiful!!!!!!❤❤ I want to make all of them! You know I loveee all the fabric lines! I would have never known about them if you have not made these.
How perfect all three to end this year 2023 with! Merrrry Christmas to all of you!!!! 🎉😊
I really didn't have time to watch Triple Play today b/c I need to finish a cuddle blanket. HOWEVER, I am so happy that I did. Everyone of you knocked it out of the park! I now am inspired and ready to finish my last gift blanket.
Natalie the fabric is SO 60s retro prints! Love all the ideas for squares! Thanks Ladies!
Fantastic Triple-Play! Great demo and explanation. Beautiful job. Huggles Always a good time to see you 😊😊
Oh my goodness! I love how Jenny did the new on point triangles! So much easier! Awesome!
One of my favorite Triple Plays!❤. I want to make all of them!
Misty I just love your quilt. I actually have that fabric and have been too scared to use it
Nat you hit it out of the ball park again , I love them all and thanks for the videos .
Jenny! Thank you for making on point make sense to me for the first time!
Holy smokes…. What a great surprise! I love every one of your quilts. Y’all are quilt genus!
I love triple play! Please make another book! Love you 3 beautiful ladies❤️❤️❤️
Triple play is my favorite! And I just can’t express how happy Natalie seems to be and how relaxed she’s been become. Marriage suits her. Merry Christmas to you all.
Natalie, I think you missed your calling as an engineer. I would have this all mixed up, yet you make it look so easy!
Just finished a twin size of Misty's version. It was so easy and so quick. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks ladies! You hit it out of the ball park with color and design, lovely work!
I so love the tricks.... sewing ALL the same color in one long strip! Many times i've thought of this and felt bad about it... I'm now FREE.... when Jenny says it's ok... it's ok!!! Thank you Jenny for bringing a bit of "fruggle" back into our world... I spent most of my life making the dollar stretch... now that i don't have to worry,,, i still do it because it's just plain common sense and not wasteful!
I couldn't believe it was Triple Play Day!! LADIES!!! Sew simple and fun!! And sometimes you do need to slow down and just have some fun. Perfect ideas for that new batch of layer cakes that I just got... and I think I have great points about each of them. Misty's is simple and "pieceful", Natalie's is a bit on the wild side, and I LOVE the surprise on point idea!! Jenny, you are so right about new ideas and bucket list quilts! I hope y'all are going to do another Triple Play book, I just went through mine the other night and I love having all of those ideas in one place! Have a blessed holiday season, Merry Christmas and happy quilting!! 🪡🧵
Love each of the quilts and they way they play off each other. Misty's idea of combining Jenny's pattern with hers was brilliant. I love the way the quilts play off each other. As always, Natalie's quilt was stunning!! I have your first Triple Play pattern book and hope you gals will put together ANOTHER book.
Another awesome Triple Play Day! 🎉 Loved all the Square in a Square quilts. Jenny, your surprise, bam, on point! ❤ Thank you all. Merry Christmas 🎄
I love triple play. You have a variety of cuts to choose from, and you are all so relaxed and having fun.
I look forward to triple play every month. Thank you again for some great ideas.
I love watching Natalie iron. She is such a perfectionist.
I love how you balance different skill levels to inspire.
My favorite thing about Triple Play is how you all come up with completely different ideas even though they have a common theme. I love the variety of your creativity. Especially love Natalie's quilt in this one.
It must be wonderful to do this with your daughter and daughter-in-law
Wow! That was🤗 great. Jenny's block was definitely a surprise and I loved it. Natalie's blocks looked so hard. My first thought was I don't think I can make that. Then she did her part. Now, I feel very confident that I can, and I see it as a challenge for me to. Misty's block super cute and I love being able to save a whole 10" square to show off its entirety in a quilt "untouched". Awesome job ladies! Thank you for this!!🥰
I am really loving how easy this square in a square is to put together!!
Love the banter between the 3 of you…don’t stop
I love them all but that square Jenny did reminds me of an Indian blanket for some reason. I love it and the fabric line. Gorgeous
Thank you gals for another triple play winner. You gave us many beautiful, creative inspirational ideas to play with throughout the year. May you all at MSQC have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Blessed New Year!!
Hello I was making a scrappy quilt but I messed up so I got to remake it can I use the same fabric if it is not messed up bad so when I get to the part of putting the middle in there how do I do it do I see inside out on three corners than see it tighter than put the binding on it right?
I am new to this I am trying to learn but also I need to take my time also without rushing
Hi , I love your videos. I’ve been busy and haven’t watched in awhile . I just wanted to say Natalie looks great ! 😊
I love the fun quilts. They get remade in different fabrics 🥰
I LOVED EVERY QUILT EQUALLY!! Can't wait til i can try every one of them !!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great from all three of you. Can’t wait to try these ideas!
Love Natalie’s quilt. Gives me Jen Kingwell vibes. Simple but complex looking. Thank you for sharing your creativity.
Absolutely my favorite, Triple Play!! Smart and beautiful ladies♥️
Jenny, I like that you are sewing all the strips together. I can tell that there is going to be less waste when you do that. And I loved Misty's fabric line. Nat, you are so good about giving hints about how you can do things differently and get the same thing.
I enjoyed all of them! I would like to use Jenny's to make a quilt for my bed. Thanks for the demos.
You are all amazing! I love all three of these!
Ok I usually can find my favorite with you three ladies, however today winner winner chicken dinner!!! All three are my favorites. I have 52 layer cakes so I am going to make one of each. Great job I love these. Merry Christmas
I love Mistys quilt. I love all 3 quilts.
Love the Triple Play! I plan on making one for our camper
It’s amazing how you ladies always coordinate your clothing with the quilts. Just amazing
Merry Christmas to you ladies!
It's so fun to see your three different "takes" on the blocks. They are all fabulous blocks and I loved the surprise Jenny showed us about making the blocks on point. Thanks so much.
I’m glad you showed your quilts in this order bc they look complicated as you took turns. But they are not. Ya’ll did a great job! Thank you!
I tried doing blocks on point before and it was not easy, but this looks super easy! Thanks Jenny!
I'm not piecing between now and Christmas, but I would never miss watching Triple Play. I look forward to this video every month. This time Natalie's is my favorite and I'm thinking about how I will make it and what color way I'll use right after the holidays. Thanks, so much, ladies!
This was so wonderful. Love Jennie's surprise.
Thank you Doan girls! I love triple play. Looking forward to 2024. You all look so beautiful!
Love all three. Now I know what to do with those orphan layer cakes I got floating around. Jennie's quilt reminds me off the "exploding block".
WOW, WOW, WOW, Girls, you are amazing, fabulous tutorial. Love it from beginning to end. Thank you
I always feel like I need to choose a winner on the triple play... Even subconsciously. I have to go with the gal who is closest my age.. Only one month different.. yay!! Jenny!! It was the on point that nudged you across the finish line... So very beautiful!! All of them.
I love the way your tops coordinate with the colors in the quilts
This is great. I have so many 2.5 inch strips cut that my mind is spinning with ideas.
Love these great ideas!! I'm going to do Misty's for a Christmas gift.
This is the first triple play where I couldn't decide which one I liked the best. I love them all. So creative yet simple to do. Thanks, Ladies!!❤
Love square in a square! All 3 were awesome! NOW I think it is time for another Best of Triple Play Book! So many wonderful patterns!

Wow! Loved them all. Want to make Jenny's to try out the new technique. But Misty's quilt is my favorite. Maybe it is the sweet fabric, or the calming effect of the pattern. Just love it.
I’m in agreement
I love all three of these quilts. I'm going to do my best to make all three this year.
Thank you lovely ladies.!❤🎉😊
