      Dumb question here,
      does Carl actually runs like he did in the 1973 movie?

      They were good, but Ian Gillan and Murray Head were brilliant in the original stage play.

    No way, Anderson was the one.
    What a great artist, singer and human being!

    Favorite version, hands down. The faster tempo really turns it even more into a straight up prog song.

    I got to see Carl and Ted in the early/mid 90's in LA. It was freaking magical!

    He’s in the same league as Ronnie James Dio as far as power, control, range and diaphragmatic support. One of the best to ever play that role. 🤙🏾

    I saw JCS every time the production came to my area, and I NEVER ONCE got to see Ted and Carl on the same night....each time, it was either Ted's understudy or Carl's. It's too bad too because the chemistry between these two men in the film was palpable

    Why is every live version I hear of this seem that the band cannot control its tempo? This is WAY to fast :(

      @ddherenow  Před 6 lety +14

      Tempos were set by the conductor, who was also the Music Director of the production. I believe he had been working with Carl and the rest of the cast over the course of a number of rehearsals before the orchestra was brought in. It's a very brisk tempo, for sure, but I believe it was a conscious decision. The tempo at the end isn't a whole lot faster than the tempo at the beginning.

      This was a rock opera dude, in 76 it wasnt old ladies going to watch this, but young people, and you've got to give them some fire. If you think a production with this kind of musicians doesnt have a conductor or keeps the tempo randomly then you clearly have no idea how this works, no offence.

      it is live. live rock performance tends to be faster than studio versions. it is what it is, enjoy the power and energy!

      It's not that they can't control their tempo. Carl is just singing rubato, which basically means he's purposely singing slower (and then speeding up) to make it more expressive. He and the ensemble are never fighting over tempo. It's just the style.

    So many people have done it better, so I don't get everyone's fixation on Carl. Not saying he's bad, this shows he clearly isn't, but he's so removed from the best

    • @sinajakelic
      @sinajakelic Před 3 lety +2

      who would be the best in your opinion? and who are those ‘so many people’ who did it better than Carl? I heard tens of cast versions, not yet close to hundreds, but certainly couple of dozens and then a lot of solo performances of the song and just a few come close to Carl, let alone ‘so many better’

      Ricardo Afonso, easily. Tyrone Huntley is also superb and brings a lot of Carl to the role on stage, but with better control of the voice and stronger belts. I'd say Murray Head and Allan Mortensen are also vocally more impressive emotionally. Jon Stevens brings a great presence to the role also.

      @@CynicalCharmer Never heard of that guy. So I went and looked him up. czcams.com/video/pv3qwBYtlFA/video.html - A superior performance to Carl Anderson? In my book, doesn’t even qualify in top 100. I respect your pesonal taste though, even though I cant be sure if you are joking or trolling when you talk about Carl’s voice control ;)

    • @sinajakelic
      @sinajakelic Před 3 lety +5

      @@CynicalCharmer Murray, Alan and Jon are fantastic but they are all struggling with the melody that Carl sings with ease, control and flow while still giving the powerful and raw performance that sounds the most human and real. With Carl it is not about showing off the voice and skill - even though the are there and superior, it is about the deliverance of the role. None can compare. Listen to his performance 20 years later, still killing it. But we come from a different world you and I :) Can I guess Ted Neeley is not your ‘finest’ Jesus? Your top 3 being Balsamo, Tim munchin and John Legend.

      @@sinajakelic
      That's fair, though I'd say Ricardo brings a lot of that in bulk.
      Declan Bennett also does a really impressive job as Jesus, even if not quite Neeley, but you're correct about Balsamo, I think the purity of his voice and character add the unearthly element of Jesus.
      I deplore Minchen and Legend though, I think they were both incredibly out of their depth
