When I was in my early 20s I had a 1983 Tercel wagon with 4WD. I loved the gauges showing how it was tilting. I would have kept that car forever if I could have. Easily one of my favourite cars, ever. And yeah, for some reason 1985 was the year of the grid.
Sitting in my white 1985 4runner while watching this video parked. I'm the original owner and have 306,938.9 miles on the odometer. I'll never get rid of this truck. I love it. Taken it across the country more than once. Never lets me down. Still fun and capable of road. I get a lot of compliments as well as offers from hopeful buyers. Classic legend with 4wd. Great video. Thank you.

This vehicle has several features that are rare or uncommon in that year:
Electric windows
Moonroof
Rear vent
A/C
Inclinometer
Color match plastic cladding and soft touch roof panel on the rear cap
Full carpeting in the rear
For the year, this is a top optioned example... very desirable.
Zack you shoulda went into the back seats from the passenger side. Toyota designed that side to be easier to enter and exit, they even put a second door handle on the back of the passenger door panel for people in the rear to open the door.
The 22R and 22RE is a beast of an engine. My 81 22R had 494k miles on it and has not been rebuilt. If you accept the 22R for what it is it's great.
Driver side timing chain guide is a weak point. OEM plastic guide becomes brittle and breaks (as mine did). If guide is not replaced (preferably with aftermarket steel guide) timing chain will eventually eat through timing cover and many bad things will happen.
The two-tone white and orange paint job looks amazing.
I saw an example of this on CZcams with a digital gauge cluster...it was a 1986 though. That one had a turbocharged engine (the original engine, Toyota offered this with a turbocharged 4 cylinder in '86 and '87), and a manual swap (the turbo 4runners were automatic only).
We had one of these, but a couple years newew as it was the V6 2dr SR5. Same 'back up' to take it out of 4wd transfer case. You sure knew it was a TRUCK - pretty much a pickup with a cap and a rear seat. Yes, you got a cheap stereo and a tilt wheel, but that was about it (no power package on ours, and pretty sure nothing like that tiltmeter gauge box shown here). Even with the V6 it was sluggish (150hp in a 4000 pound vehicle) but made a terrific roar, so that kind of impressed people. Nearly rolled it on a sweeper that I'd take 100 times before - in a car. Center of gravity was insanely high. Summing it up - as a 20 year old guy - you felt felt pretty damn macho in this thing, even if actual performance was limited. And you could go over curbs ;)
Don't worry the southwest US still has plenty of these on the road or being used as landscaping/work rigs.

I loved the 22re in my 89, Last year of the first gen. Mine was cammed and a ton of fun. hope to see a review of the 22rte one day if there are any left

You're the second car reviewer who reviewed a 1st gen 4runner, who of which climbed into the back seat on the wrong side. You're supposed to climb back there on the passenger side cause the passenger seat has the lever that moves the seat forward and up out of the way to make it easier. Lol
Didn't even mention the second door handle on the inside of the passenger door for rear passengers to get out easier.
It also appears it's missing the clutch start cancel button for the manual transmission. It would've been in the same location as the blank black switch on the driver side. Still cool ride, but needs some serious rust removal underneath

Only problem with these was the turning radius was so bad. But i'm not sure with the solid axel if it was any better. I had an 87 and you had to do a 3point turn just to get into a parking space. They just dont turn sharp at all.
4:25. Is this not the space for the clutch start cancel?! My 1986 was a base model and had this feature where I could start the truck without depressing the clutch. Was this possibly not offered in 1985?
Might've been optional in '85. Not 100% sure though

@@mrdave777 Yes that's correct. I've owned four 80s Toyota trucks and loved them. I currently have an 84 4Runner SR5 with all options which I've had since 2004.
Those SR5 seats are very uncommon. They are desirable because they had additional side bolstering than the standard cloth seats. In the mid to late nighties, I was unsuccessful in finding a set.

Passenger seat should also have a lever/foot pedal that makes the seat move forward and out of the way, without messing with the forward/backward adjustment, so it's easier to get in or out of the back. Surprised the owner didn't tell him about it and he didn't mention the quirky second door handle on the inside of the passenger door for the rear passengers
I was the previous owner of that 1984 and it started in -10f every time

The blanking plate on the dash is very likely to be the where the rear fog light switch would be.

That engine voltmeter is practically quite useless for diagnosing alternator and battery performance since it has no precise enough markings.
I’ve seen those seats sell only in dirty hut decent condition for $150-$250. “Rare”

The grilled chicken breast of auto engines; it's not exotic it's not flashy but it's simple, easy, and can fulfil your basic needs.

I have an 86 dlx 22re and it’s not quite as nice… but if you wanted to review it. I wish I had an 85 but I’m going to buy a 84 that’s been sitting for 10 years to do a solid axel swap.
And the value of these 4runners just went up. lol. And once Scotty reviews a 1st gen dear lawd.🎉..hold on to your 1st gens my guys.
I believe they put the V6 in the 1989 pickup with the new body style. The 1988 4Runner looked more like this, and offered the V6. What gives?!
The 3.0 V6 came out for the 1988 model year as an optional engine for both the 4runner and similar looking pickup

MrDave keep in mind, Toyota has been always about balance (power to weight ratio balance) and reliability, especially during the 80s and on up to the 90s. Course I say that and the 3.0 V6 had a bad reputation for head gasket failure. Not sure what the CEOs at the time were thinking when they decided to drop the turbo 22re to replace it with the V6. Maybe they saw other small SUVs and trucks with a V6 option and wanted the same for theirs...who knows.
Meh, every car company will have an engine that is a total flop at some point. As far as I know, Toyota had a couple engines that sucked during the 80s. The Tercel's engine was another one from what I've heard
I have the only good reason for not growing up driving Toyotas. Growing up in the 1980s I went through a lot of cars from the late 70s and all the emissions, rust, vacuum hoses from hell. I learned a lot of Auto Mechanics and loved working on cars. I would not have learned anything with a Toyota except how to change the oil. Got a new 87 Mazda truck off the showroom my senior year of high school and learned nothing about Mazda repair. I bet it is still running today like new.

You are correct. The two-tone paint, and in that color specifically, was an 85 only option for the 1st gen.

0-60...eventually. When I first bought mine, the previous owner put a body lift and 33 inch tall tires on it, but still had the factory differential gears. 5th gear was out of the question unless you were going downhill lol

The altimeter is cool but in the wrong pressure unit for the US. We use in-Hg. It's cool that they even thought to have pressure calibration, though at the printed scale and inbuilt accuracy a few feet of difference would be unnoticeable. This engine would be gasping for air if you tried to max out the altimeter.

It sounds like you've never driven many 80s/90s Toyotas. They need the manual trans because they're so gutless with the automatics, they're unable to get out of the way of their own exhaust 😢
its a really cool truck but with 260k miles on a 4 cy that is damn near on its last leg! Plus the 4cy versions of these are dangerously slow! they can barley get out of their own way! I thought my old 1987 suzuki samurai was bad but these are almost just as bad! they wheel like a mofo though!
The 3.0 V6 that came in these a couple years later was also a dog, however I'll have to disagree that the ol' 22R-E is on its last legs. I've seen them with 400k miles still going, and that's *abused* mileage. These engines are insanely durable, slow but durable.
@TheScreaminSeaman hey bro I’ve seen 4 cylinder Toyotas with 500K miles, just because it’s a smaller engine doesn’t mean it’s gonna break quickly. Sure, for other brands that might be different, but not Toyota from what I’ve seen. You don’t buy one of these things to go fast, you buy it for it’s off roading purpose. In this day & age drivers should be patient enough to slow down for a slower vehicle. Hey, you won’t get any speeding tickets👍
@@Blakecryderman7244 yeah they can go further than 260k miles they have countless bmw's and mercedes and even less reliable brands at or above it just depends on how you treat them. they are dangerous especially with merging on the highway lets say you are getting on the highway behind some kunt doing 40mph still towards the end of the ramp and theres a lot of traffic in the next lane so you have to look and find the best gap you can so you don't get hit! yeah ppl should slow down but most don't cuz they are assholes! so you merge behind the slow moving guy and floor it the 22re especially with 260k or even worse with 500k is gonna have even less usable power to get up to speed in that short of amount of time. I had a 1994 toyota 4x4 pickup sr5 with the 22re and I loved it it was just slower than shit. but it only had 80k miles on it (back in 2003) so I can't imagine how bad it would be now with everyone going 85mph and the extra high miles! I drive a 106k mile 1994 f-150 4x4 with 5.0 5 speed and I get the same mpg with all the extra power. plus its just as reliable.
