My godfather Tim would pick me up once a month in his red 1997 4Runner. My favourite part was how the back window rolled down and we would go barreling down the highway with all the windows down playing The Offspring. We would always go to McDonalds back when there was a 2 cheeseburger meal. Whenever I see a 3rd gen, especially red it takes me back to my special days with Tim when I was a teenager. He is still around and I now see him once a month in his elder years.

Back in 2000, my dad bought a fully loaded 4Runner of that model year. It has everything from the in-bumper fog lights, the leather seats, the matte black spoiler on the back, and even the slightly larger 5-spoke rims in chrome. He held onto it through economical hardships and various adventures. It drove me everywhere, home from the hospital, to and from school and practices, and along several road trips.
I am lucky to say that 2 years ago, it became mine, at only 153,000 miles on the clock. Now I’ve worked on it myself to get it up to snuff, getting rid of those terrifying-down-hills warped rotors, putting in all new fluids and synthetic oils, and all the new seals that leak quite terribly if not changed. I’m not wanting to put bigger tires or change anything on it-keeping it the way it is and forever was is a representation of my life, only now do I take full control of it. It now has 177,000 miles and it’s running smoothly like it always has. I’ve gotten large cash offers for it various times, but like my life, it’s not for sale and it never will be.
Thank you for this review-I’ve been waiting for this video since I would sneak glances at it in the background. I’m happy to see that the true star of the show finally gets the deserved attention. You nailed every emotional feeling this car is and then some. And just as you stated in your review of the Camry, this car evokes everything I find ideal in a partner-they may not be the best, but they’re always going to be there for you and up for adventure.
    Happy trails and keep ‘Runnin!

      @TheHamburgler123 Před 9 měsíci +8

@@BrockOBaumaI've got a 98 with the 3RZ and the 5-speed. Only 214k miles on it and it's a Colorado car so nothing but light, superficial rust on the frame despite never seeing the inside of a garage for the entirety of its 25 year life.
I've been tracking the MPG for years. I have knobby All-Terrain 33's (265/75/R16) and still average 21MPG. Back when I first got it, and it still had tiny all-season tires mounted on 15" wheels (the default size for 3rd gen base model), I could consistently get over 24mpg. The best trip I ever recorded was 26mpg, all rural highway miles, traveling ~65mph the entire time.
All of this using 85 octane fuel at elevations normally between 5000-10000 feet.

I have the same tires on my 2003 3.4L 4spd auto taco with 108,000 miles. They’re 1” taller than the stock 30.5” 265x70R16s (to be fair they are often rounded up to as 32”s and 31”s online respectively). Can’t say I’ve ever quite seen 23mpg though. Impressive!

Regarding the brakes, you should consider upgrading the the front calipers, rotors and pads to the ones used in first gen Tundras. Its a pretty common mod with noticeable improvement. Found a 1998 4Runner Limited in Boulder for $12K and thought of it as a 'throw away' that I could easily let go of for something new. 18 years later and I am still driving it daily. In 2020 I fell into a a ‘99 manual transmission 4Runner for $4k before I knew it was rare. I bought it off the original owner with the receipt from our neighborhood dealer. It had 330k miles and a bootleg Jane’s Addiction concert in the tape deck. But the rust is getting to a point where I should let it go. There are so many other Toyota trucks I could ride through the apocalypse. But if I refuse to leave 1999, maybe the apocalypse will never catch me.

That ending really struck a cord with me. Earlier this year I got my hands on a 2005 4runner, which is the generation I'm nostalgic for. Having grown up around early to late 2000s cars.
Shortly after I parted ways with a Subaru SVX that I absolutely loved, but wasn't the right car for me at the time. I knew that, but I felt incredibly guilty about it, like I had failed the car.
Half a year later and I'm loading my entire life into a uhual trailer and towing it across the USA to move states for university, inside my Toyota 4Runner.
I feel an unwavering comradery to that car. And even though I had to make lots of changes in my life, parting ways with some things I wish I didn't have to, the 4Runner ended up being my chariot to carry me through those changes, with no second guesses or concerning noises.
And I've been absolutely loving uni so far. Change does not have to be a bad thing.

I had an 03 Tacoma that I used for travel for my job (which sometimes required off-road work). Often drive to sites instead of flying even if it was a 1000 mile trip. I was single at the time with many weeks on the road of just myself. By 2016 when I needed something else, I eventually regretted not having it anymore. It was sort of a big part of my life.

Amen, brother. My 98 4Runner was my first truck and, no joke, it changed my life. Best purchase, a mere $3500, I've ever made.
It's the ultimate adventure rig -- simple, capable and reliable. I took part of the back seats out and, even being 6' 3", I can sleep in the back comfortably. Cumulatively, I've spent months sleeping back there, mostly on federal land, with all the road trips and off-road adventures. There's something so satisfying about knowing you'll always have a dry place to lay your head and that your rig has the capability to get you almost anywhere. It has opened so many doors for me regarding access to beautiful areas, hikes, camping locations, etc. Spending time out in those National Forests and Bureau of Land Management lands keeps me grounded.

I had a ‘98 that saved my life! It was my first car. I wish I still had it, it was absolutely incredible. Hit a patch of slush in the middle of the NYS thruway at 12AM, like if the plow had skipped over it and left a 6in pile in the middle of the road. It bounced and lost traction, started to spin, and got nailed in front of the pedals by an 18 wheeler. I spun the other way, slid onto the shoulder and the front right tire found purchase, which sent it rolling over. When it finally stopped, I still had to turn that beautiful engine and lights off for the final time. When I unbuckled, I landed on the drivers side window. This was the only injury I got other than heartbreak. A total of 9 stitches. To add insult to injury, the 18 wheeler was one I just loaded on my shift at UPS. If I could afford it I’d 1000000% buy another Gen3.

My first car was a 94 4Runner. I loved that car.
My second car was a 98. I loved that car.
And then gas was well over $4 a gallon and I was a poor college student driving 60 miles a day, getting 14mpg on the highway on a good day, working part-time for not much above minimum wage, and I had to say goodbye and switched to a Jetta that only lasted me a year and a half.
That 94 was in service for a long while after that, and made it to a cool 250k before it was put in the grave in an intense battle with a tree.
Now I have a 96 Tacoma and it's just like my first car all over again, except worse because it's only got a wee baby 4 cylinder and it's not happy with so much as a few cinderblocks in the bed.
I love you, every 90s Toyota. I'll love you forever.

It has a slow oil leak & the AC didnt work. Got the AC comppesor and fan clutch replaced & added some oil. Added some creature comforts like a subwoofer, a trunk cargo cover to keep it hidden, white LEDs for the interiors & headlights, rain gaurds to match the hood deflector. Since I have worked from home for the last 3 years I barely put 2k miles on cars a year. I'ev already put 4k in the 4 months I've had this thing just taking road trips!

Finally a review on the 4Runner in the background! You got a real keeper there.
My daily driver is a 2000 4Runner V-6 4WD. We bought it new in 2000 and it is a family member. At 195K I replaced the sagging original suspension with a 2" lift on Bilstein shocks, OME springs, SPC adjustable upper control arms, front diff drop, 285/70/17" Falken Wildpeak AT3w tires and Level 8 (6) spoke alloy rims. It completely transformed the vehicle. Two years ago with 225K miles, my daughter and I took it from KY to Colorado and explored the Alpine Loop near Telluride, Ouray and Silverton. It performed flawlessly and climbed over everything in it's path without breaking a sweat. We even got 18 mpg across Kansas fully loaded with camping gear and 2 adults. I have upgraded to Tundra front brakes and installed a JBA cat back exhaust, (from Summit), and it doesn't sound "farty", but actually purrs and reminds me of an old BMW I used to own. I just turned over 250k and I will drive it till it dies, or I die...whichever comes first. My money is on the 4Runner.

My parents bought a 1997 4Runner Limited from my grandparents in 2011. It was green, with gold emblems and a leather interior.
We took a trip down to Florida that year to pick it up. All I remember is the smell of the leather interior along with just how large it was when riding in the back seat as a kid. That think was awesome.
My dad used to use the 4Runner to move tree branches and things like that. 100% a capable can-do truck. Would’ve probably gone forever if it hadn’t been for the strawberry milkshake. Which left it to sit in the driveway for 4 years.
I remember going outside and looking at that truck. Admiring the chrome lined bumpers and those all too iconic 6-spoked rims. The gold emblems were so nice to look at. I remember the rear shocks gave out and began to sag, giving the 4Runner a “Carolina Squat” look.
Finally after 4 years of sitting derelict my parents called Lizard Lick Towing to come pick it up. I still want one to this day. Hopefully I’ll get one sometime soon.

I had a 97 limited and loved that truck, then I had an 06 Limited with the V8, now I have a 15 Limited. 4Runners are always the answer. You take care of them, they will take care of you. For 3rd Gens, Blistein 5100’s and Tundra brake upgrade will address most of your concerns, but you will need to get 17in wheel takeoffs. These trucks are great, and as always I enjoyed the video.

Everything about the driver and admittedly subpar mechanic I am revolves around the 3rd Gen 4Runner. Sometimes, I'll find myself desperate for something faster, more urban-friendly, and more modern. But things like this will have me asking why I wanted anything else in the first place.

    RCR, I'm a huge 3rd gen 4Runner and 1st gen Taco enthusiast.
Just a thing to mention... Did you guys do the inside of the fully-boxed section of your 4Runner frame? If you're winter driving this in a salt state, I highly recommend doing it. 3rd gen 4Runners and 1st gen Taco frames rust from the inside out.
The method that I have found to work best is to take a pressure washer and attach a "sewer jetter". Its a 365 degree water spray nozzle that shoots really high pressure. You can use that to clean the inside gunk out of the fully boxed section.
You can follow this up with Eastwood's Internal Frame Coating, and spray several layers of the paint inside the fully boxed section. The paint uses a 365 degree spray nozzle attachment to make sure you fully coat all the inside of the frame.

I got it right after graduation and immediately drove from Oakland to Texas and slept in it for a month. Cruised at 100 down desert highways and nearly rolled it that first trip being a dumbass off road. Since then we've been all over the west coast. I've built out a nice sleeping platform and god I love traveling in this truck. Sure I've had to replace a lot of parts and yeah she's rusty bit what do you expect for creeping on 300k mi? She's never let me down and I'll never give up on her. Third Gen best gen.

I did the timing belt, water pump, radiator, added an extra trans cooler, all new brakes including lines, tires, por15 the frame, then fluid film, and new tires. I did the work myself, so I have about 4K invested. It's slow, it doesn't handle well, but I love it. It eats up rutted dusty dirt roads and runs like a Swiss watch. My mom bought one of these used with just a few thousand miles on it. Because of the price, she was stuck with it for around 10 years. For the majority of my childhood, this was the family car. My dad went through several work trucks during that time, but that 4runner stuck around. I spent so much time in the backseat of one of these. Rust finally took her, but she still ran fine. She had the Limited trim level with the fancier seats and the stripes on the side. Might seem weird but even now, at 25, some nights I have a dream that the good ol toyota is getting passed down to me as my first car. Even though that stage of my life is long since passed. Heck part of the reason I bought a Scion was because of the impression Toyota made on me when I was young. My mom loved that thing. It's hard to put into words the affect a family vehicle can have on your childhood.

I have a 99 sr5 that I bought in 2017. I had no idea about how good they were when I bought it. She’s imperial jade mica and had a little over 200000 miles when I bought it. She has 280000 on her now and still runs flawlessly. The build quality of these suvs is mind blowing. I will be buried in this truck. When I got it it was spotless and stock. Came with nice options too, rear e locker, auto, sunroof, etc. this one was from California so not an oz of rust ( big deal here in the rust belt). She has been tastefully modified since then. Put foam cell pros on it for a nice 2 inch lift, duratrac tires slightly oversized but not enough to throw things off, tons of maintenance, nice stealth roof rack, fj style grill, just little touches to make it mine. By far the best vehicle I have ever owned I’m always trying to collect more of them. You have good taste mr regular

Found my ‘97 3rd Gen for $2,400. We’re at almost 290,000 miles. Rack and pinion system replaced, wheel bearings replaced, transmission replaced. All in all about $5,000 in the vehicle.
At some point something smashed the oil pan in, and I had to drive it 40 miles to the body shop with the oil pouring out. It was bone dry by the time I got there. There were metal shavings in the pan. I was sure it was over for the engine. But I swear it runs better now than it did before, lol.
If I leave it a week without starting it, it will blow a cloud of white exhaust as big a smoke grenade until it blows out the moisture/coolant/oil whatever. Still soldiers on.
I’m hoping to get to 320,000 miles. I love it so much I may try to salvage another engine if this one goes.

I love just how different your 4Runner is to my 2004 Chevy Tahoe despite them being the same class of vehicle. Yes, the Chevy is newer by four years, but it's still the same era but facelifted. The Tahoe is much larger, fit for Americans. The seats are wide and plush, and it rides like an old Cadillac and has a huge pushrod V8 compared to the 4Runner, in which it still probably still manages a better 0-60 time despite being far more American than that 4Runner. It can actually pull its rated weight just fine, but in what it excels at in basic truck things, it will not hold a candle to the 4Runner's build quality nor offroad prowess. Mine is not a 4x4 or Z71, but I'd wager the smaller footprint of the 4Runner is superior to a Z71 Tahoe or Suburban.
The interior of the Tahoe is well-used. It has 182,000 original miles and has been with my family since brand new. The dashboard creaks, and it doesn't have a single square foot that doesn't rattle in one way or other. Even then, it's still mechanically perfect and the 4l60e lives to shift another day. No doubt due to us taking care of it and not towing much with it, and if we did, my Dad would always turn off O/D and keep it in tow/haul mode even with an unladen steel trailer. This truck is not perfect by any means, but it has never ever broken down on us and it still runs despite its age and having a rebuilt title following an accident while it was parked on the street. No problem. Just get a parts suburban and slap on a new front end. The pinstripe on the passenger fender is misaligned because of the parts truck. Who cares. Drive it. It'll run forever.

Long time watcher and I’ve been WAITING for the 3rd gen review. I’ve owned over 5 4Runners through out my years and my 3rd gen has been by far may favorite. All of your complaints about gas and lack of power really should go to the 2nd gen. That is by far the worst offering (besides an amazing look) they had of offer. All of the horrible gas and shotty auto trans of the early to mid 90s but nothing good beyond the 22re. The 3rd gen fixed almost all of that. An amazing v6 and a cult like following. If you do start collecting I would highly recommend getting your hands on a 2nd gen with a 22re 4banger and manual trans. It’s incredible. Also the v8 4th gen is an amazing offering as well. Over all the 3rd gen encompasses everything 4runner enthusiasts love and that’s why they are so popular to this day. Happy trails

My '99 Limited had that "multi-mode" transfer case that allowed 2hi, 4hi-unlocked, 4hi-locked, and 4lo. I also had the rear diff lock. This is more functionality than my brand new 2023 4Runner TRD Offroad has, which is part-time 4WD only, no "full time" option.

I absolutely hated trucks and big SUVs until a family member gifted me their 20-year old '99 SR5 (they moved out of country). Mine is pretty worn out and slowly rusting to death, but it is still an absolute tank in cold weather and is a great stuff hauler. The visibility/greenhouse is incredibly good for such a big vehicle. They truly don't make vehicles like this anymore.

I grew up driving a 1986 1gen 4runner with the 4 cylinder and manual. Dad brought it brand new and kept it unmodified ever since. Still runs today. That great faded yellow with the original decals.

I should have realized you can roll the rear window down! I can’t believe that was the simplest answer to getting the good shots you get of cars rolling behind you. I thought you just REALLY knew how to focus your camera through the things that heat up your rear windshield.

It's not just with the 4Runner with the manual transfer case, you should do that with all of Toyota's transfer case equipped trucks. The actuators on them like to seize up if they aren't used in 4-5 years and it turns into a transfer case replacement job.

God I love the third gen. My dad had a 96 SR5, I grew up in the back and passenger seat, and it was one of the trucks I grew up in.
I bought a 96 Hilux Surf diesel in Japan last November and have been daily driving it since late May. I *did* submit mine for review, I think you'd be surprised how much is both similar and different between the US and JDM versions! Mine has a few interesting features including electronically adjustable shock absorbers that make a BIG difference in handling. 22mpg and a nice quiet diesel, I LOVE my truck.

'95 pickup. Yes, I always had my left hand on the A-pillar Oh Shit handle. (Except when it was time to shift)

I had a 2000 3rd gen with 217k miles. I was dumb enough to believe the 5000lb towing capacity, and my dad and I towed our motorcycle trailer with two bikes from Nashville to the Smokies. By the time we got to the Tail of the Dragon, it was stuck in 3rd and after we parked we checked the transmission fluid. Dip stick came out dry, and it wouldn't budge from park. Topped off the fluid, and it was totally fine. No shudder or anything. Most unkillable car I've ever owned.

So much of this brings me back to my old FJ Cruiser (RIP). Bracing at all times with the pillar handle, worrying about knocking my head on the glass, transfercase maintenance. Love these old Toyota trucks, can't wait to get my mitts on one again!

You know what's funny, I took both my deer home in mine, my first buck, which was my first deer, and the year after, which was last year, another buck that I hit with the 4Runner and totalled it. The cop helped me get it in the truck, and the tow truck brought it to the dealership next door to my house. And we dragged the deer into my back yard. It was intact enough to save the meat.

Funny you said unseen trooper. I have a 90 trooper and when you were talking about acceleration and highway dynamics all I could think is I understand what you’re saying, but I’m doubting it’s as bad as the trooper. I love her. Come to Ohio if you want to add it to the show!
