Mixed Media Painting// Building Layers

- Hello friends!
It is officially winter here in the Northeast and wolves have been on my mind. So, I decided to create a mixed media painting with a wolf as the subject. This is one of my favorite ways to create a painting. Combining abstract techniques with a focal point creates something unique a beautiful, but the layers are what makes it so. This painting has a bit of everything; Using different tools like squeegees, foam rollers, and palette knives to create a variety of textural interest. Collage, stencils, spray paint, acrylic paint and finally oil paint create a painting that has interest and depth. It's all about the layers!
I hope you enjoy the video! Links to my materials below!

Ok everyone lets share share Lydia with the whole world, she deserves the recognition for her fabulous artwork. 👌
Thank you so much!!!❤❤❤
I adore wolves. They’re one of my favourite animals. When I lived in Canada’s northwest territory my husband and I went snowmobiling one evening under a full moon and the northern lights. They reflect nicely off the snow giving you an ethereal glow that allows you to see quite well even though it’s pitch black. We stopped at the edge of a lake to watch an entire pack of 11 wolves playing on the ice in the middle of the lake under the full moon. Talk about surreal. It was one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen and a memory I will always treasure. I wish I could paint it but I’m afraid my forte is music and not drawing. I can’t even draw a straight line with a ruler. This painting is just wonderful and the blues, purples and grey/black remind me of the lighting that night.
Thank you Chanda! What a beautiful description of your time in Canada. That sounds so magical. I always think of wolves in the winter. It was cold and had just snowed when I painted my wolf. Truly atmospheric for the subject.❤
I just love your videos. I love impressionism and some abstract. You are sooooo creative! I tend to be so realistic and really want to step outside of that box.
Love your style and process. And I love your poem!
Love watching your talent
I absolutely admire your artwork and videos. I'm totally in awe of your skills as an artist and your stunning paintings. 👌👌👌🏴
I really appreciate that! Thank you!😊❤
Me too, I love to watch how you build your paintings. You are very talented. I love colour but I can't draw and to me there is no point of a colorful background without some show of amazing artistic ability taking center stage. ❤ Thank you
Absolutely beautiful ❤
Super creative and very beautiful
Another masterclass in the creative cool & visual stimuli that makes your work stand out... 👏👏👏👏

Great video! What with the Patreon launch I was a bad parent and forgot to watch this! Love the wolf, the poetry, and the entire effect❤😊
The addition of the oil paints made the wolf so much more 3D. Thx, Lydia, for sharing your talent and creativity with us!💜
Truly gifted! So many cool techniques & ideas in this one painting! I do see and feel the difference of your oil paints! Gorgeous!
Singing Wolf, and a bit of poetry to go with. Most excellent for the winter mood.
❤
@lydiabroderickart How do you not have several million subs!?! You're amazing!!! CZcams algorithm is a clear failure here...

Thank you. Your work is beautiful.
I love this Lydia. Being a wildlife and loving all animals, they are always my favourite.
Brilliant piece - I've learnt so much by just watching you - love it
This looks fabulous …… love the way you explain what you’re doing as you’re doing it, so we can see the results as they happen. Agree with other comments …. Don’t understand why you don’t have a million followers. 😊❤❤

Beautiful wolf! Love the before oils and after oils shots. You can really see the difference. Love your poem as well, goes excellent with the painting! See you on Patron! 🤩😍🤩
This is beautiful Lydia, so thankful for YOU and your channel 🙌☺️
Wonderful... The purples, blues and yellows all compliment each other so well... Especially in the wolf! I love the chunky details as I call them... The big swoops making up the fur... Great stuff as always and yes the oils at the end make all the difference... 😎👍💖
Superb!!! I would love to see you painting roses and other flowers in abstract realism
Thank you! To be honest... Flowers are not my strong point. I don't know what it is, but they are super challenging for me. I'd have to practice.😃
@@lydiabroderick867 that’s why 😄
Absolutely brilliant love this piece. It was quite interesting the way it totally transformed after you used Oils. I thought it was stunning in just acrylics but it went to a whole other level when you added the oils. Amazing 😮 Thank you so much for sharing this piece with us it is very much appreciated.❤❤❤
Fantastic! I like the musical notes for the howl and the paint markers look like the wind. Great energy!
Thank you so much!❤
The colors as well as your wolf is soo pretty. enjoy seeing the layering process 🐺💜
So enjoyed your painting and the explanation of the different tools you used. Painting turned out great! Thanks
Love your videos. Joined patreon to support you!

Super fine painting. Only found you a week ago on CZcams lol but I’ll keep checking out your work. It’s a nice clean style that i admire. Keep up the great work and when I get a job, Ill check out you Patreon as well. Yes Im in that starving artist category lol!
Thank you Korrina!!!❤
Beautiful work and great video production too!
This is an awesome painting!!
Beautiful 👌🏻🎨😍
Love predators, just have always had an alignment with them, primarily wolves, Cheetahs and our aerial predators, eagles, falcons, crows, etc
So love the mood you created with colour and marks, it totally compliments the wolf❤. Oil really does finish off pieces to a beautiful quality...
Would love to support you on Patreon, even the other artists I subscribe to, unfortunately the South African currency is in the toilet. Hopefully I will be able to do that this year still 😁. My sincere wish is that it surpasses your naughtiest expectations.
Louise de Masi on her latest video explains at the end all the avenues she's using to monetize her skills, please go have a look, she's painting a black cockatoo. 🙌🏻💜🎨
I will check here out! Thank you Catherine! I agree with you about predators. I do post free content over on Patreon as well that I don't put on CZcams. You can join for free and still see that content. ❤
Both versions look amazing 🤩
Thank you!!!❤❤❤
Love your work!
Really beautiful, amazing, dreamy, perfect. I love to watch you paint. I personally boycott Hobby Lobby. I don’t like the influence the owner has on American politics.
Please tell us other places we can buy the same tools with other than Hobby lobby!
Hi there. Could a person use the golden open acrylics instead of the oils to acheive a similar finished outcome? I love your work btw. ❤
Wow, the end result after oils is dynamite! It just comes out at you…
BD
Right??? Pretty cool! Thanks!😊
Master squidgy 😅 (no idea if I spelled that right!)
Wow, this was great to watch! One question. I use collage and oils also but sometimes I use fabric as well as paper. What do you recommend I would seal it with?
I haven't used fabric, so I'm not sure on that. However, for anything finished with oils, I use Gamvar gloss varnish from Gamblin.😊
I Always freehand my Scheich on my canvas do you think that isn’t such a good idea?? I value your input !! Thank you in advance for your videos , content and commentary!!😀😀
I think it depends on your process. I sketch directly onto the canvas sometimes, but I tend to sketch out ideas on paper first. Once I've done all the work, it seems like a chore to do it again on canvas... So, I use transfer paper. It also cuts down on the pencil marks.😊
@@lydiabroderick867. THANK YOU SO MUCH Miss Lydia……I really really love your work you are such an inspiration to me!!! I Always look forward to your videos….!! How is your Mama loved it when y’all painted together !!
@@dorydiavelone3531 My mom is doing well! Thank you! I don't get to see her as much as I would like because she lives in a different state, but we talk frequently.❤
Lydia could you mention the breathable glaze name again please thanks. Wonderful wolf my favorite animal !
The breathable varnish is Gamvar by Gamblin for oil paints. The fast drying medium is Galkyd by Gamblin.😊
Hello, I also like this picture very much 😊. Could you tell me what kind of little brushes you use? Best regards
I've been using ZenArt miniature brushes lately.😊❤
Did you happen to graduate from the Milan mastery program? You're technics are very similar to what they teach just curious. Very beautiful!!
Hi Brenda! No, I didn't ever do the mastery program. However, I think they do great work!😁
