Create an Interstellar Black Hole in After Effects

- This After Effects tutorial uses only the included plugins to create the warp and accretion disc.
This is a sequel to my earlier tutorial, where I showed how to use Expressions, Mathematics and Bulge to create a black hole similar to Gargantua depicted in Christopher Nolan's movie: Interstellar.
This tutorial focuses on using the included CC Particle World to generate an accretion disc, then uses Bulge to warp the disc. The leading edge is added back in by using a 3D Luma Matte and finally Glow gets the hyper brightness of the inner disc.

Pinning this. Thank you
this was the longest 15 minutes of my life
I can’t tell if you are making a time dilation joke or critiquing the tutorial.
@@ShiveringCactusi think they mean that it felt so long because of the math equations 😂
Hi! I like you tutorials, great results. Thanx for sharing with your knowledge with us. Wish you more subscribers man, you deserve it.
Aww thank you. Adding subscribers is cool, but I’m making these tutorials for fun, but yeah fingers crossed people find me.
Dude, I just want to thank you right now. I'm making a video on black holes and I am so happy. I've been searching for many days for a black hole making tutorial. I downloaded blender and everything but none of the tutorials were straightforward enough or provided the file in the description. I appreciate you dearly for this and I'm looking forward to looking at more of your tutorials.
You’re very welcome. Thank you for this comment and please post a link to your video when it’s ready (if possible)

sorry that im that late.. this one is outstandig and so great! thanks for sharing, mate!
Not a problem. That was some long night you had 😁 glad you enjoyed it and thank you for your kind words
@@ShiveringCactus something wont work that well... ill tag you and show you the result :)
Incrdible tutorial, thank you very much!!!
Thank you!
Thanks, you´re a wonderful teacher.
Thank you, I try my best
Nuevo sub... sé que no me entenderas pero tu eres un crack 👌 ...you are a master ⭐
Puede que no te entienda directamente, pero Google Translate sí. Gracias.
Hey i was making my own style of blackhole, and i was wondering how you able to affect the 2d bulge fx with 3d coordinates?
My 2d bulge effect stays in the same position when i change the z coordinates in my camera
Incredible tutorial. Had a blast making this with your help. Hope it’s ok if I share it on my social media?
Thank you and yes, please feel free to share it as much as you like
That's amazing!! But I don't understand the "alt + birth rate" step (at 3m11s). I can't do it like in your video. Can you help me explain, pls?
Thank you.
So the expression needs to be:

It was very impressive!
Can I make and use the above tutorial myself from some of the videos I'll use for the competition?
Of course, it will be used by changing the color, composition, and some additional effects!
If you win the contest, it will be used commercially!
You’re welcome to use the end result of the tutorial however you wish, as long as no one tries to claim copyright of my work 😉 Good luck in your competition.
@@ShiveringCactus I'm Korean. So I don't know much about English, so you're saying that it doesn't matter if I use it like I said in the above comment after looking at your tutorial, right? Are you saying it's not commercial?
Yes, you are fine to use it. It is all my own work and if you make a black hole using my tutorial, you can consider that your work. I was just stating that if a commercial product is made, they cannot claim ownership of my work from my channel.
@@ShiveringCactus thank you very much. I am learning a lot from the tutorials on your channel. Thank you always for posting very good tutorials!
Just, Wow! This helped a lot. Can you please also teach how to make this in blender?
Oops, I forgot to reply to you. Umm, I’m not confident enough with Blender yet to show you, but it’s on my list
How do you make it so that the animation starts at the beginning? Real black holes don't just "switch on" like that.
Good question. I’d probably use the twirly setting in CC Particle World to generate a swirling vortex then time reverse it.
@@ShiveringCactus I don't know if there's a way to do it with expressions, but I did figure out a solution: First, pre-comp the whole project so you don't have to fiddle with a whole lot of different layers.Next, drag it to the left in the timeline to a point where the fully-formed black hole is at 0. Finally, enable time remapping, extend the precomp to the end of the timeline, and drag the time remapping keyframe to the end.
If I’m trying to turn up the focal length to make it looks much bigger but the distortion from the black hole disappears. Any suggestions?
The distortion is managed by distance to the camera. Changing the focal length shouldn’t have altered it, but if the camera is much close than before maybe the distortion is larger than the screen. Try disabling the expression and see if it returns.
@@ShiveringCactus still not working. would I have to start with my camera at my suggested focal length and build it from there?
@@aymankiraly drop me a line using the contact form on my website, we can trade emails and I can take a look at your project if you like: shiveringcactus.net
We want a tutorial on how you makw that south park cartoon atvthe corner
I hadn’t been planning one for that. But...that sounds like something I should do as a special.
can you do a tutorial on how to add it to the sky like this? /watch?v=hZ7ZMS9_PAI
I think you can do this pretty simply by adding the black hole comp to your sky and using the add or screen transfer mode
What the hell am I doing wrong, Mine just comes out as a flat sausage basically. It's not disk shaped
Try downloading the project, it should be in the description, and see if that lines up for you. If not, go to my channel’s about page and drop me an email and I’ll see if I can spot the problem
Ciao.
Come sempre eccellente tutorial.
Vorrei chiederti se è possibile eseguire questo effetto fatto con C4D (collision deformer) direttamente in AE?
