Setting Up My Marudai for an EASY 8 String Basic Spiral Kumihimo Braid

Today I'm getting my marudai set up to start an 8 strand kumihimo spiral braid. This video is a simple step by step demonstration on Kumihimo Braiding for friendship bracelets, specifically on how to do a kumihimo spiral braid with 8 strings to create a spiral pattern using a marudai instead of a round disk.

Kumihimo braiding originated from as early as the 7th century, was found in Japanese Buddhist temples, and used by samurai warriors. By the 17th century, books were produced with various kumihimo patterns.
In the SCA, these braids can be used for holding award medallions around the neck.

Excellent video, but i would have liked to see what the braid was at the begining, maybe a few examples of how/where its used, and to have seen your work at the end. Is there a separate video youve done? Also what prevented the spools from unrolling? Was there a weight on the braid in the center?

I flipped the spool and put it through a loop so that it didn't unravel. The weight on the bottom of the braid is a simple clip (used for holding a stack of papers together).
