  • In this video I will show you how to do Raku in your microwave kiln. Be sure to watch the other videos in my "microwave basics" series. This video is #5 (I know it says #4, but I have not figured out how to edit that yet)

      Yes, I can bisque in the microwave and both bisque and glazing can be accomplished in about 15 - 20 minutes. You will have to experiment a little to see what you microwave will do. Fire in 3 to 5 minute incriments.

  • @theartofpottering3294

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike  Před 4 lety

      As hot as you can get it. My microwave kiln fires to somewhere around 1400 to 1500 F. The piece should be red hot and that is fine. Just put it in the container with something that will burn (No plastic!) and cover it up!

  • @theartofpottering3294

    Do you think that pieces need to be thin to fire in a microwave kiln?

  • @newcreations1929

    Captain Mike what Coe clay are you using? Is it a certain kind I should use? I have 05 is that ok? And did you glaze it before you put it in the microwave?

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike  Před rokem

      Yvonne, I use all kinds of clay, but mostly low fire cone o4/05. I first fire the piece to bisque then glaze and refire.

    @officesolutions4652 Před rokem +1

    fabulous...please tell me what is the largest piece possible?

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike  Před rokem

      The circumference of the inside of the kiln is 4.5 inches. A 4.25" piece would be about ax to keep the parts from hitting the edges. the max square piece would be about 3" square. The height from inside top to bottom is about 1.5 ".

    Do you think i could make a kiln using a brick with works space chisled out of center and adding graphite into the chamber then using glass paper n firie for glass, i need to make and fire pemdants for my pets ashes and didnt know if i should just buy the microwave kiln, the only thing i would get is the glass with the kit but want to choose my own. The peices ive made are alreadyndry for some pemdants that i was thinking just to add resin to. Thanks i would appreciate suggestions

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike  Před 5 lety +1

      Terry, first you would need to use the proper type of brick. Fire brick could be used in some builds, but is harder than the brick used in a conventional kiln. Depending on the size of the kiln you wish to build, it would probably be better to purchase a used manual kiln. They can usually be found cheap. If you are trying to build a microwave kiln, it can be done, but the ones I used cost about $43.00 delivered and I can't build one for that. You can bisque clay in the microwave kiln with no problems. If you are going to make glass pendants, be sure the glass is the same COE (coefficient of expansion). I hope this helps.

      @@CaptMike id like to make a kiln with fire brick carve out the inside and use graphite layer and paper to do glass or ceramic, itll be less on my end. In the fututre ill be making a raku kiln. I cannot affird a electric kiln yet so ill start with that like the kind you have. Gotta save money in a fixed budget. Thanks

  • @terrynicholson5214
    @terrynicholson5214 Před 5 lety +1

    With a manuel electric kiln someone said fire by color, i suppose its a matter of knowing what the colors mean by temp right?

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike  Před 5 lety +3

      A manual kiln or one with s kiln setter on it is controlled by the type of cone you put in the kiln setter. Check out using a Manual kiln on CZcams. It all depends on what you are going to do with the kiln. Bisque & glazing in a kiln, manual or otherwise is no problem...lots of wiggle room. However, if you are going to do glass you will need to become familiar with firing schedules, again covered well on CZcams. As far as firing either in a microwave kiln, I usually do clay by time and color. If it gets glowing red hot it usually works out OK. Glass, I fire until it melts to the shape I need. 2 layers of 3mm glass will round out with enough heat and become about 1/4 inch thick.

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike  Před rokem

      A regular kitchen oven will not get hot enough. Without the aid of a thermometer you will need to get the glazed clay up to about 1500 to 1700 degrees F or glowing orange.

    Did you get the kiln with glass or did you use recycled glass? How much and brand of your kiln? Thanks

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike  Před 5 lety +1

      Terry, the kiln did not come with any glass. I do use some recycled glass, but expect a few failures as there is no way to determine if the glass is compatible. Wine, beer and soda bottles from the same company have a good chance of being compatible. If there is anyone in your area that makes stained glass or fuses glass, they will have LOTS of scrap. They should be willing to give you some. I got my kiln here www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M2XWNCI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.
