The Fall of Age of Empires

So Age of Empires 3 is pretty cool, and good, and has a couple of issues but that's no trouble. What happened next, however, is a little bit tragic.
Making Nintendo DS Age games was weird, sure, but they're not evil - just out of their depth. It's the last game in the franchise, published in 2011, that sunk the game until Age of Empires 4, which is coming out later in 2020.

Say what you want about AOE III but the music is God-Tier
Yeah ngl, the music is slapping.
Presentation wise AOE3 was the best in the series in my opinion.
Dont forgget the lighting system and bloom and the water and the sweet destruction animations
this
If they just made an ancient/medieval game like aoe 2 but in 3d instead of just making it hd...
I loved the music and destruction of 3
Ah yes, Age of Empires 3 and the gentlemen's agreement not to use boats because it would lag out all our computers
All ships are the same anyways
Tell that to the Dutch player.
"Let's just agree to not use ports here" xD
Cant even play 3 now without hackers in every other match spawning in troops. DE is pretty fun atm
WoopsToggle weird ive never run into this, or maybe that’s why I lose lol
I love AOE III still plain' it.
Yeah i think AOE 3 wasn't that bad
It was great, it only suffered from muh Nostalgia
I liked it. The single player story was engaging, despite what the video argues I think the game mechanics adequately reflected the feel of the era. Could they have been done/implemented better? Maybe, but at the time I thought they were ok.
The one thing I’ll agree with is the card grinding. This made sense in the sp campaign, where it’s tracking your progression in that campaign. At the start you’d have a weak home city and low power cards and towards the end you’d have unlocked the stronger cards. However in multiplayer or competitive (which I didn’t do much of), it’s annoying.
It is great , it suffers due to lack of balance patches
Me too
Man AOEIII wasn't that bad. I still play it during summer
PS: true, the graphics were so ahead of their time. So ahead that it went against the playability of the game
IT was fucking great, I love AOE3.
@Hoàng Nguyên what's that? A mod for ao3?
@sorryformyenglish Yeah, it is. Adds a bunch of civilizations. As well as new option, maps and music for each civilization.
It’s pretty much the best mod for AoE3 right now.
aoe3wol.com
@Aleksa Petrovic That sounds awesome
True, I wasn't able to play it decently until 2007 or 2008, and by then many other more interesting games had come out
Out of all the iterations.... I'm an AO3 man. We are out there. I've played em all, but the gunpowder age is just too fun for my imagination.
@Hoàng Nguyên Excellent Mod!
Big fan of your profile picture.
I respect AoE2, because it got my brother into the games, but AoE 3 has my heart 😅
Age of empire 3 is epic, still playing it
Youre name in aoe 3 online ?
yeah this guy is delusional
And here we are, the Age of Empires community, stronger than ever before...
A couple days ago we hit our peak concurrent players
A 20 year old game that still growing
This does put a smile on my face
@STORM LORD I'm not sure tbh but I got some hope for it, because it seems like the devs are taking their time to develop the game and dont want it to be rushed, I dont really like the art style but we can drastically improve it manually by decreasing the saturation.
We still dont know much about the game so let's just hope it will be a good one to remember
Went to the comments to defend my favorite game, good to see my work is already done.
AOE III is my favorite Age of Empires. I appreciate they were trying to do something different instead of recycling the same gameplay over and over again.
Finally someone who understands
aoe 3 is uninspiring, its just a mess of gimmicks pulled in from other rts games. ensemble showing signs they were done creating original rts games since the early 2000s it seems.
@Hoàng Nguyên thats what im saying, ensemble wanted to try new things but ultimately were forced to keep making rts games and that killed the studio. sure many people love aoe3, but it took it took 1 step forward and 2 steps back (and a few to the side) in terms of everything.
@Hoàng Nguyên In 0 AD I don't like the whole (conquer and in a simplified way of writing: stealing others buildings. Otherwise great music and units and graphics. bad lag when big fights though imo
The issue was that non of those new things were actually good or fun. It also didn't help that if you wanted an RTS with gunpowder, Cossacks was a miled and bounds better and more fun option. AoE1&2 were better than almost every RTS out at the time, hence why they are so popular even today. Meanwhile, AoE3 was, at best, average.
I love Age of Empires III, I'm glad we got it. But all the criticisms are valid.
Agreed.
Especially the card system
@@hoseadavit3422 Cards aren't a problem. Progression tied to the card system is a problem. Just enable all cards from the beginning and let everyone choose their favorite playstyle from the very start.
Honestly, after playing Wars of Liberty i can't see a flaw on AoE3 or an AoE4 about WW1 and forward
@Hoàng Nguyên yes!
AOE 4 is going to be a AOE 2 ripoff and ruin the forward progress in time to try to steal some classic AOE 2 fans. Spirit of the Law just made a video showing it.
@@jimtim1144 unless it's AoE2 with new AoE3 mechanics, which it won't be sadly
@@jimtim1144 You mean it's going to do a different take at what Age of Empires set in medieval times could look like. There are a lot of similarities but just as many things seem to be completely different mechanics-wise. Medieval times are by far the most interesting so it's good they decided to stop advancing toward modern times and went back to exciting period.
@@Progeusz You could say that but it seems obvious to me the company is just trying to snatch up AOE 2 players instead of trying to make a new community. I mean its even got unmanned trebs. Plus even though AOE 3 was flawed I like the time progression that was being done but after 3 I can see they are to afraid to do such a thing again. Idk if they wanna do a remake of 2 and not just a remastering why not call it 2 remake instead of 4.
“Fall of age of empires” what do you mean? The game still has more players then half the triple a games out today
Yeah, really weird title when the franchise has been thriving in past years. I guess everything except AoE2 is in bad spot but AoE2 is doing great and keep getting better and more popular with every year.
You are ware the Age of Empires Franchise has been going strong because of Age of Empries 2, right? Hence the "Fall of Age of Empries". if AoE2 wasn't such a classic game, then the series would be as good as dead since AoE3 and AoE online pretty much killed any hope of a AoE4. It's thanks to how good AoE2 was and still is, that we got AoEHD wiht new content, and thanks to the popularity of tit that we got Definitive Edition, and it's thanks to all of that that we are getting AoE4. It's also thanks to AoE2 HD that we got AoMHD and Rise of Nations HD.
Looking back, you literally can't name a single franchise aside from Age of Empires that has one game so loved, so popular and so well regarded that it single highhandedly saved the IP from extinction and helped remaster other games outside its franchise.
@@TaigaGaoo You are a typical Age of Empires 2 Hardcore Fanboy-moron. Age of Empires 3 is basically a nice game u idiot. It has better graphic and engine and DE version will upgrade this. If Multyplayer secure and vac measured are implemented than there will not stand anything in the way that this game will be the perfect rts. The colonial age is the perfect age melee and distance fis like 50/50. @@kshreyasmahesh8199 what's your point? I'm very interested to see Hindu myth creatures in AOM2( if it becomes a reality)
I loved the two DS games. The Richard the Lionheart campaign is really challenging, and Mythologies managed to implement AoM's core themes quite well in a turn-based setting.

Are you gonna cover the "definitive edition" games at all?
AOE 3 is great man, AOE4 is on the way!!!!!!!!!! I really loved the Home city mechanic. Makes sense for the era, also the MUSIC is fucking great.
I agree that the home city mechanic was great. But I don’t think it was good for competitive play. They should have added an optional mode that disabled it.

Fall of Age of Empires? Yeah right....
Especially with Age of Empires 4 and Age of Empires 2 : Definitive Edition which I love right now.
this guy has to be casual if he talks about the "fall of age of empires" and then says that age 3 was good and fine in his video description. Nothing against your preference, but AoE2 is still the most alive and well out of the series for a pretty good reason.
@@anon1403 Did none of yall watch the video?
I honest to god don't remember how I found your channel months ago, but I can safely say that your videos are probably some of the most entertaining and very well put together for your style. I enjoy seeing these games I've NEVER heard of or played get brought up and talked about with pros and cons and breaking them down and still keeping it humorous. You're the reason why I even started reading Shaman King and why I am still thirsty for an ending to the manga.
Never heard of aoe? Is this the new fortnite generation?
@@jamaly77 I'm not really one for RTS games often, I've played about two my whole lifetime so.
Also no lmao, define 'new fortnite generation' cause I was born in 1998
A new Kbash episode is the best way to start a Friday
Been binging all your videos after watching your 2 hour wow video on a whim (and loving it.)
Man you make me laugh so much. I love your style.
The commentary on Age of Empires 3 is really interesting to me, as it was my first introduction to the series, along with Age of Mythology. I've never really thought about the changes being jarring before, as that was just the base for me. So when I picked up Age of Empires 2 and started playing that as my main game, the jarring part was the lack of features I had been accustomed to. It was weird that all the civs had the same looking units, that Malians were just as white as Slavs, that aging up was just kinda there, and that there was no over arching progression to it. Looking at it objectively, I agree with most of your points, and I prefer 2 for a more rounded game. That said, I couldn't help but feel pangs of defensiveness as you were talking about my childhood friend 3. I have no doubts that if 3 was given the same support that 2 has, revitalized playerbase included, I would switch to 3 any day of the week and would probably never look back.
I really liked these 2 videos, they really put the whole game series in context for me. Age Of Empires is older than I am by a few years, and was one of my first introductions to gaming, so I never really considered the larger story of it. It was just a constant for me.
Just found your channel the other day. Keep it up man these are great.
Are you going to make the "rearise of age of Empires"? cuz AoE2:DE and AoE4 look dope
I guess he’s only talking about original game releases. AoE2DE is a remaster and we know barely anything about AoE4 apart from it having 3D graphics and being set in the medieval era.
DE somehow looks significantly cheaper than HD, and the devs don't seem to have any self control when it comes to adding civs. I almost didn't buy DE over the new civs that already existed. Gbettos are overpowered as fuck, and nobody fucking asked for the hot, smelly, shitstain mess that is cumens, but they keep doing it, because we all still somehow assume they know what they're doing. They fucked up the controls, so now you can't que up movements BEFORE moving, because people are scum slurping retards, and building things makes NO FUCKING SENSE. Its trying to be a compromise between the old building ai, and typical RTS building UI, and it doesn't work. Building lost markers that make identifying buildings quick and easy. DE doesn't even credit microprose. Its a fucking piece of shit, and once I've done enough hours to writing a scathing, angry review over all of it, I'm going back to HD, and Voobly.
_AoE4 look dope_
We don't know anything about AoE4 at all, except from what we can see in creative decisions surrounding the remaster, so I have no fucking clue how you came to that conclusion.
jeeeeeeez someones must have gotten rolled in multiplayer to get that upset over the game. Every single issue you just described mechanically can actually be disabled in the options. And building markers? Bruh, they look basically the same but better. You must be the only person around who has an issue with any of these lmao
@@Goodstahh _someones must have gotten rolled in multiplayer_
I've won every game I've tolerated to the end in DE. This is hilarious to me. I just can't fucking get enough of it. Your projected shortcoming are the sweetest ambrosia.
Don't listen to him dude. The DE edition of AoE2 is fucking lit. It looks beautiful, the soundtrack is really stellar, and it still plays nigh EXACTLY like classic AoE2.
I don't know why people are trying to say its shit, when it's literally one of the only Re-masters that has been done WELL in the past 8 years.
Like.. the mindset of some late game capitalists just fucking confuse me. A dev team mixes up the formula and presents a beautiful re-imagining without changing the core gameplay that every as been falling in love with over the past 20 years, and you go and try to say its as bad as a standard AAA release by a bunch of disconnected rich-fuck-wits that dont play games? Like.. the fuck? lol
"Where's my swords?? Give me back the swords!!! I WANT WEAPOOOONS!!!"
basically how I would feel if they made an AOE on XX century or the alien future...
Halo wars 1 and 2
AOE III is Great i just love smoke of gun powder
The physic of the units!! When they blasted to the air by a cannon balls
Are you gonna cover the definitive editions? Also age 4 just had a trailer, maybe revisit after that comes out?
I expected so much more from this video. Instead of analyzing why aoe3 actually failed, you just started bashing a game that you hardly even understand. For example, were you aware that much of the leveling up problems were solved in one of the later expansions? Did you know that the problem with the balance was mostly caused by the developers abandoning the game after 3 years. You conveniently link a 2015 tier list, just before the community made their own balance patches which vastly improved the balance. You say that it's hard to tell upgraded units apart, but that's just because you didn't actually play the game. I've played the game competitively and I have never seen people complain about this or struggled with this.
Je hebt 100% gelijk jerom, goed gesproken jongen. JEROM is rite. N3O 👍greetings from DyNa
The game is trash, get over it.
IHaveMyCrayons its just not your taste. Its not trash.
Jerom, have you ever considered watching the video before commenting on it? He did address those things.
Also, if community has to improve the game years after its release it only proves the point the game was a total disaster. Outside of extreme exceptions, early years are what matters.
He showed the unit and its upgraded version. They do look too similar. Just because the obvious fanboy like you pretends there are no issues doesn't mean actual facts (units shown in the video) stop existing.
@@Progeusz thanks for watching m8, means a lot
As for the other guy, god bless, but any criticism of 3 were co-opted from my experience and those who posted on forums - they're hardly new. They don't make the game bad either, I just think they're stumbling blocks where Age 2 had like, none. Seems pretty reasonable if you ask me.
Hold on now, Age of Empires: Age of Kings on the DS was an absolutely amazing game, I loved the heck out of it and still play it to this day.

The grinding part about AoE 3 is bs you start at level 10 I believe and if you reach like level 20 on one civ you start at 20 with all others. With one 40 minute game you get 3 levels so 3 games and ure level 20 when u reach level 40 all civs start at level 40 so please make points and do research instead of talking bs.
Edit: and when ure level 25 you can already choose all the important cards the levels beyond are just to get more cards which leads to more decks and strats.
Back in the days all cities started at level 1. So yeah, there surely was a grinding element. I personally enjoyed it though, maybe because I didn't and still don't play competitively. All in all, AoE3 to me is still the best one
@@lucaventinove3151 I didn't mind the "grind." It added some degree of continuity to the random map games. I actually wish that AoE2 would have something similar.

I’ll put out my voice in support of AOE3. I can definitely see how it’s really different and how the city progression system set a high bar to even be competitive. I never was competitive as a kid when it came out, so I rather enjoyed something to work towards and the city system was something I thought was an improvement from the previous games.
Thanks for the coverage of Project Celeste. Should have maybe mentioned that the game is completely free. As for how the competitive scene is doing, there's a balance team that has issued 17 patches so far. I like the wall placing mechanics in aoe 3. If you joke down alt while you do it you can repetitively place down walls.
Age 2 is still very popular, it’s received 3 expansions in the last 4 years despite being over 20 years old and they re released a “definitive edition”
