Is he the same umpire that officiated Game 3 between the Astros and the Yankees in the playoffs this year? That umpire was atrocious! He consistently called about 65 pitches that he ruled as "strikes" against the Astros hitters that he ruled as "balls" against the Yankees hitters! A couple of the pitches that Christian Javier threw were perfect strikes that landed nearly dead in the middle of the strike zone and he ruled them as "balls!" Lucky for the Astros they were clearly the much better hitting and pitching team that night or else they would have lost the game to the Yankees! That umpire tried really hard to cheat for the Yankees that night! He has no business officiating games in any level of baseball, never mind the MLB level!
He seems like an awful human being who happens to be an umpire
😂😂😂
If Angel Hernandez were a cop, he'd write a ticket to people who drove through a green light
Good analogy.
There are bad cops teachers mfg workers that hid behind the union
I think he needs glasses or something. It would be hard to wear them behind the mask though, so he won't say anything. The MLB probably wouldn't let him do that. He could be a 1st or 3rd base umpire though.
Or for going the speed limit
If Angel Hernandez were a cop, he would be very good at using his knee
When the team benefitting from the bad calls is asking, "What are you doing?" You know he's bad.
Bad....or rigging the game. There’s definitely something going on behind the scenes with this guy, if he’s constantly calling bad plays when they’re obvious to everyone else.
There’s corruption with the MLB and the union that protects him. Just like it’s an open secret that boxers throw their fights at times or prolong the fights because there’s a lot of money behind the scenes exchanging hands, I have no doubt it’s the same with other sports like baseball. No doubt in my mind, Hernandez was intentionally calling bad plays and rigging games. Probably lining his pockets with a piece of that pie too.
@@Cr1ms0nRav3n I suspect MLB knew about the steroids and continued to line their pockets before they got called out on it.
@@stuartholden6163 oh definitely.
His ego ruins the game, get rid of him.
There was one time where Angel made a genuinely great call and I didn’t believe it until they showed the play in super slow motion 😂

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Angel not only makes shit calls, he does everything in his power to make the game about himself

He learned that from Joe west
Too true

You are 100% correct!
When MLB phoned Hernandez to ump a WS game, Angel missed the call.
HAHA! Good one!

I see what you did there. LOL.

The best umpires go unnoticed.
The biggest stars in baseball need to inform they won't play if Angel is one of the umpires and pay any fines resulting from it. They can afford it. If Ohtani wouldn't come on the field, if Angel was on it, he'd be gone in a minute.
I think if robotic umpires become a thing, then they should be given an acronym that spells ANGEL , so everyone will always know who made them necessary.

You can make anyone look bad by selecting certain clips from their entire career. For Angel Hernandez though, it would be difficult to select enough clips to make him look good.

At least CB Bucknor isn't an arrogant tool like Angel Hernandez
You nailed it. Those are the worst umpires by far.
I agree, but since it is a WS game, Eric Gregg should also be out there! He arguably had the worst called game in the history of the playoffs in 1997 behind the plate. I still have nightmares over that one!
@@andyd_9 Yeah that was pretty bad.
Ding Ding!!!!!
Came back two years since this video dropped. He's still calling the game and he's even worse now.
We had a Ump in High School that kept a 16oz beer in his chest protector. He had cut a little pocket out the back of it that he could insert the can into. He'd "go to the bathroom" at least 3 times between innings during the games. This was his cover to dump an empty and insert a new can. During the game, he'd pull the protector up over his face like he was "adjusting" it repeatedly. That was when he'd take a gulp. He once called a 9th inning pitch thrown behind my buddy Everett's back a strike. Great memories.
If most people had a 20% efficiency rating at work, they would be fired.
He got promoted
Hernandez is terrible, but you're lying with statistics there. He didn't get 80% of his calls wrong. He got 80% OF THE CALLS THAT WERE SUBMITTED FOR REVIEW wrong. He made way more than 5 calls that game. All of the other calls he got right, apparently.
@@puckerings that is true, I'll grant you that. I was thinking in lines of what was reviewed. Even if he gets every other call right, it's still bad. And let's face it, if he got 4 out of 5 wrong that they did review, gotta wonder how many others he has blown. But you are right, that % was misleading as hell.
His calls are below the Mendoza line
Not if they were union workers.
At my place of work it's 3 strikes and you're out of there, with Angel behind the plate it's 3 strikes and you're on first base.
Such a good comment
4 balls and you're out.

I got into baseball because I've heard of how bad Angel was. Literally heard how bad he was, looked up a CZcams video, and because of suggestions I'm back into the Blue Jays. Watched two games this year on TV before I saw the 29-5 blowout vs Red Sox and NOW I'M ALL IN BABY.
Thanks for the video!
Lol that look back @0:21 when he doesn't get the most obvious strike call. Like, it's not even anger, just pure shock.

Just recently in the last week or so, sure enough, you have this lousy umpire making some really bad calls. There's a reason why he did not ref any post season games, and he blamed it on racism, but we all know the truth and his cries fell on deaf ears. This man needs to retire from this profession asap!
Can't they promote him? Give him an office with a nice view somewhere.
This is so true. I am surprised that pitchers and catchers don’t have a sign that says high fastball I’ll duck and let it hit Angel in the face. At least in hockey we can shoot the puck at them and say oops I was trying to clear it around the boards

Joe West has to be considered.
@@johnpendleton9326 i was gonna say this, there is only one other who can compare to how bad hernandez is and that is joe west. the guy can legit barely stand up after he crouches down anymore and has the only highlight reel of bad calls to match angel.
Joe west isn't bad when making calls, he just has an ego bigger than his neck and it has been a massive problem for a long time, and everyone hates him for it.
Hernandez gets fired for doing his job incorrectly
Hernandez: “It’s racism”
Worst part is that him doing that takes away credibility from people who may have actually experienced racism in major league sports.
Play the race card
Not even fired, just not promoted 😂
Isn't it always racism?
Blind people are a race?
All I saw was the title and knew it had to be about Hernandez, that's how infamous he's become for making terrible calls.
The only way to get rid of him is for every manager to get to the field, wait for game time, then say, "Oh Angel is on? We'll wait for another umpire." Then refuse to take the field, fines or not.
If enough teams just refuse to play when he's on crew, fans will demand money back, and MLB will have to do something.
Damn, Angel really made 212 accounts to dislike this
Might not all be him. It might be the people who realized that the narrator of this video is straight-up reading from AH's Wikipedia page for this video.

It bothers me so much that umpires are never held accountable for their mistakes. You can’t say anything about them because you’ll be fined or suspended.

The amount of monetary damage angel has done to MLB is incalculable. The fact they keep him and guys like him around makes them deserve everything they get.

Umpires have a union. MLB might want to fire them but is not able to.
They keep him and guys like him around because we will talk about him and make and watch videos about him.
He is a marketing tool.

Who watches these overpaid kneelers anyway?
Pro sports are DEAD. Quit supporting overpaid shills.
I agree. MLB keeps telling the viewing public that improving the product is their foremost concern. Yet Angel and a few others remain employed and impacting the viewing experience in a negative way.
The simple fact he brought race up as an issue to MLB speaks volumes as to the character of this "umpire"!!
@jeff sadly I have to agree!! SMH
A professional sport that painted BLM on its fields deserves to deal with a lawsuit like that.
@@leonardshevlin7260 I couldn't agree more on that aspect. I was a longtime baseball fan of over 50 years, but after all of the BLM bullshit with players putting BLM flags on Homeplate and then walking off the field and canceling games I finally gave up the game. Baseball was the only sport left that I watched and that I cared for. I stopped watching the NBA in 2002 and the NFL in 2004 so this one really hurt.
Not only is he the worst umpire in baseball history but it's absolutely laughable that he filed a lawsuit based on his "race". Angel Hernandez is WHITE, a White Cuban to be precise. He would have been better off claiming that he was being discriminated against because of his Cuban ethnic background or because he is Latino.

Employing angel hernandez as an MLB umpire is like hiring Stevie Wonder as a school bus driver.

If the Yankees and Red Sox agree on something you know he's bad 😂😂
As a high school baseball umpire, knowing how hard it is to make the right call, I would have to agree that Hernandez is horrible. However, he is protected by their union & will continue to work. That's the real horrible part of this.
30 years of umping experience from Little League to Adult leagues and our Board really has no tolerance for criticism of fellow umpires, but I am sure an exception might be made for Angel 😇.

Thank god it wasn’t just me. You’re making a video about baseball and you don’t know how to pronounce Joe Torre? Oy vey!
Put some respect on his name. Com on man
@Kevin L Not one mistake, the same mistake multiple times in the same video. Torre is a HOFer and has been an extremely well recognized figure in baseball for years. But at least he's retired and can do no more harm.

Strangely as bad as Joe West was, over the past decade Angel has managed to be at least twice as bad.
West has generally serviceable with a really bad game here and there. Angel hasn't had a game that wasn't bad in years.
Catchers need to start allowing more 'passed balls' when the balls are just high enough to hit an umpire in the right spot until he learns to call strike and balls correctly.
The fact that Angel Hernandez still has a job as an MLB umpire makes no sense at all.

The time has come for robot umpires.

I don't watch baseball at all. I know two names currently involved in baseball, Joe West and Angel Hernandez. Not for good reasons.
As a Giants fan I learned about Joe West. He obviously hated MadBum. He didn’t even try to hide it.
Worst five umps:
Angel Hernandez
Joe West
CB Bucknor
Laz Diaz
Alfonso Marquez
Add Eric Gregg to this list. As a Braves fan, I'll never forget how bad he was in the 1997 playoffs. He was calling strikes so far out of the strike zone that the catcher was literally setting up behind the batter's box. And Levan Hernandez just kept throwing "strikes" out there---the Braves had zero chance of hitting any of those pitches. So, Angel Hernandez and Eric Gregg are the worst. And Angel was always looking to start something with players rather than being an agent of calm. He consistently instigates confrontations.
I think Gregg had money on that game. Those balls were ,18 inches off the plate.
That may be true .... Buuuuuuuut I clearly remember Braves catchers setting up a couple inches off the plate and out of the strike zone in the early to mid 90's and whenever Tom Glavine or Avery hit the mitt in that spot it was called a strike - It wasn't. The overhead shots clearly showed the ball an inch or more off the plate when it passed by.
That statement takes balls!!! Maddux didn't throw a legit strike for a decade!!!
Add Bob Davidson
Eric had that terrible game, it was like he was having a seizure or something, it was horrific, but the guy really was a good umpire, especially on the bases, he had some tough games behind the plate but he was a solid ump, Charlie Williams however was another terrible ump.
Instead of suing the MLB, he should be incredibly grateful he’s actually in the show and not umping Beer league games where he actually belongs
I am glad I got to see him once in person...it was amazing. He will go down in history. 🤯👈

Many decades later I saw a Sabermetrics style statistical study that concluded just that. As for this ump, he may be just trying to get into the limelight due to psychological issues.
Interesting. If I'm MLB, I'd be inclined to look into that.

I've been watching baseball for a long time. I could have told you back in the late 80s how bad an umpire Hernandez was from Triple-A baseball. How he progressed to the majors is a mystery. He has always been controversial. And always as well known as the players for how bad he is.
Affirmative action
I remember the zobrist strike out call and almost fell out of my seat lol
I'm still waiting on the day a player who had enough, knocks Hernandez lights out. Unfortunately, the player will be arrested for assault, and Hernandez will still have a job.
a few months the local jail is not so bad, as all the other inmates will treat you like a hero,. And if you take your fingers and jamb them deep in his eyes, he will not have his job, and maybe then he would realize what an ass he is.
Depends on how hard they hit him though… 😉
IAN Kinsler would've been a good candidate for doing just that, especially with the bat in his hand!!
I will personally pay that player’s bail. Whoever it is.
Imagine being a pitcher and seeing that Angel's there when you get to the building? You're like please not at home plate, please no! Like that boss everyone hates to deal with but you have to get along to keep your job.
I would have the same response as Michael Scott did when he saw Toby back at Dunder-Mifflin. "God please no....no....nooooooo!!!!!!"
And while your average Major League player can absorb a $10000 fine no problem, it still seems disproportionate for merely expressing an honest analysis of an umpire's performance.
He's a pitcher's nightmare for sure but he's also a hitter's nightmare. The one consistent component of Senor Hernandez's game is his everpresent inconsistencies. He is a very shameful black eye on the MLB umpire's union.
Indonesian soccer referees--one of the lousiest in the sports industry-- have had better decisions than Hernandez for the last six years. Literally down horrendous.
6:31 there is no "guessing" why he's still employed.
Umpires are contractors. And they have a union. That union's responsibility is to "protect" (using that term very loosely in the context of umpiring baseball games) its workers. That means even the terrible umpires like Angel. As long as he's a member of the umpires union, he's going to have a job in MLB.
The real question we should be asking isn't "why is he still employed by baseball", but rather "why does the umpire's union continue to support Angel when all he does is bring shame, disgrace, and perception of ineptitude upon all the other umpires in the game?"
Someday , Angel Hernandez will cause parental meltdowns at Little League games .
Imagine an air traffic controller, a heart surgeon or a knife thrower at a circus with the same level of competence as him.
Excellent point
He'd be in jail
Well glad they deal with games like Hernandez does.
I see dead people.
Glad to see that slide into Piazza included here. I've been looking for that clip for awhile. Runner was 100 percent dead to rights out, but was called safe because Hernandez wanted to go home after a long day.
If Hernandez went to umpires school, how many classes did he skip????????
1:51 it's not just us watching in the seats saying it.... it's the players too
