How Keshi Broke the Immigrant Mindset

  • There is a stereotype that immigrant parents, especially Asian ones, often encourage their kids to pursue the medical, law, or engineering field. They want what they believe to be best for their kids. But, often in the pursuit of these careers, the kid must suppress their passion and interests.
    This is the story of how Keshi aka Casey Luong broke the immigrant mindset. Against his parent's wishes, he went from being an oncology nurse to being a singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist who is signed with Island Records.
    ~ Second GenerAsian is a series where I break down, give context, and shine a light on Asian American stories ~

      The bassist from No Vacation is a nurse as well. And she goes on to have a great career in music. At some point, everybody has a day job as they ascend. Nursing is just a more intense version of that notion.

    How exactly did he “break the immigrant mindset?”
    He just got famous and is continuing to make music. Loads of immigrants are famous whether they live in the US or not. This video is just the story of his upcoming into the music scene.

    Kinda crazy that you guys view the immigrant mindset in a negative way. Succeeding with everything stacked against you. Grinding to provide for you and your family, making sure that your kids have a better chance at life than you did. Wtf is wrong with you guys.

      From what I’ve been reading through the comments- idk maybe I could’ve missed something- it seemed less like people were dissing the Asians mindset than it was shedding light on the way Keshi was able to choose something different than the typical “get a job not cause you love it but to get rich” mindset and follow his dreams, and show more of his version of the immigrant mindset, aka using the opportunities his parents gave him through immigrating here and grinding to make a living to make his own dreams and his own path. Though I can see why it seems that way especially with the lowkey misleading title.

    • @jlee9360
      @jlee9360 Před rokem +3

      @@malicesu6944 Title says it all. They act as if there are no asian singer or artists. Its not the mindset that's the issue its the people that think there is something wrong with a parents sacrifice so that you can have a better life. How many rappers, artist, singers do you think make it big or even have a little success? The odds are stacked against you and the smart money is to go elsewhere. Which makes what he did even more impressive but shaming what the previous generation did and what they sacrificed for you is not ok.
