Fun isn’t something one considers when losing a basketball game. But this... does put a smile on my face
I remember watching Mercer a few times that season preceding the Dance! When I saw the brackets the day they came out I knew we were in trouble because of Mercer's composure and chemistry which comes with having four and five yr seniors that have started every game together for at least two to three seasons! Experience does really matter in big games and big time situations

In 2014, I put Mercer over Duke in my main bracket. My dad though I was crazy. Btw this was the first bracket I ever filled out.
That Mercer win was fun to watch. Same with the Lehigh shocker.

I tried telling ppl before we played Lehigh back in '12 he was gonna be a nightmare matchup for us because he was on the same level as guys who play for Duke and ones whom they recruit! McCollum single handedly kept Lehigh in that game - he got sufficient help, but he kicked our ass with his overall game

Jake, actually Duke was not the favorite in 1998 either during the season or going into the Dance! I'm a die-hard Duke fan and that 1998 tournament was North Carolina's to win, not ours! Carolina was #1 in the country going into 1997-98 and up until the FF they didn't disappoint! They were loaded with Jamison, Carter and Shammond Williams and had an off night at the wrong time against Utah! Yes u got payback against us (we did help you some during that second half) but Carolina was the odds-on favorite going into the tournament and who knows what would have happened had they beaten Utah
I will give major credit to UK in that tournament run they had - their resiliency was unmatched! And you had Jeff Sheppard! Without him (his heart and will working together) u don't win that championship! His performance in San Antonio was off the charts!

And still only 1 NC to show for it.
Plus they were without their three best players down the stretch this season (DeSousa, Vick and Azubuike) yet still made second round of NCAA'S! No question it was Self's best work! Plus their loss to Auburn was no slouch of defeat considering Auburn's manhandling of a completely healthy Carolina last night
I'll add that had Kansas been completely healthy they would have given Auburn a much closer game maybe even make the FF
And from my several days ago comment stemming from it - look at Auburn now and where Kansas may have gone

I figured the Louisville game would be included. People tend to just include those Louisville wins when it fits a narrative... like beating Duke... one of the few programs people hate more, is Duke.

Two of those losses stuck out the most - 2012 against Lehigh and 2014 against Mercer 1) because the automatic is in both instances was OMG Duke just lost to Lehigh and Mercer and OMG it's like the end of the world the earth is gonna tilt on it's axis; I get that! But instead of the initial obvious that Duke lost both let's take the time in commending two schools who not only had the David Will to Win but the other thing most forget is that in crunch time with both those games tight the experience factor kicked in (Lehigh and Mercer we're junior and senior laden which in recent times has come to the 4front due to the one and done guys)! The other is the most complete selfishness in regards to two individuals who as both those seasons progressed obviously cared about only honing their own games and padding their own stats and who were locker room problems according to several friends I have who live in that region -Austin Rivers and Jabari Parker - both offensive mentalities who couldn't defend to save their life! Listen, I'm a diehard Duke man but even I can tell when stars r only out for themselves along with having a total disregard for team play and success; clashing with the fact we had very few other options who were consistently dependable assisted in leading to those one and done scenarios against more experienced teams who handled the pressure of the moment better! Those things r the difference between those teams and the 2015 and 2019 teams! Those recent teams had a wealth of frosh contributors but at same time successful because they bought into team play rather than individual status
