Just wanna say that the actual name of the song is Stultifer Cantus, which means "The song of fools"! It's a great name for the song because it reflects the story well, the current Iberia (which is mentioned in the song and where this event is localized) is in an incredibly dire situation with the Inquisitors barely able to maintain the status quo, so the song's wishes are rather foolish because no, the golden age will never return, Iberia can't recover from the disaster it suffered.

The thing about this track is that the story itself makes it abundantly clear that this fabled "Golden Age" will NOT return again. There are three factions that matter in terms of this song: The once-prosperious nation of Iberia, the Abyssal Hunters, and the threat of the Seaborn. For Iberia, their Golden Age was one of expansionism and was built on the backs of immigrants who brought them the tech that allowed them to prosper so. But when it all came crashing to a halt, they blamed the very people who brought them that prosperity in the first place. For the Abyssal Hunters, it's about their desire to return to their home of Aegir, and their pride in their homeland. However, Aegir was likewise built on expansionism, and it was this expansionism that brought them into conflict with the Seaborn. The Seaborn are a mirror the the expansionism of humanity: a force of nature that seeks to ever expand, propagate, evolve and assimilate, not out of malice but simply out of survival instinct. The Aegirs aggressive attacks were a pre-emptive effort to stop the Seaborn's expansion worked in the short-term, but it led to nearly every Abyssal Hunter being wiped out, the few remaining being stranded on land, and very likely made things worse in the long term. With the current state of Aegir unknown, this song is an admission from both the Hunters and Iberians that their respective Golden Ages were built on greed, selfishness and hubris that eventually came tumbling down and will never truly return, but at the same time the hope they find in the memories of those bygone days is no less meaningful and true because of it.

(Sorry in advance for long paragraph)This song is incredible and is the first boss theme in Arknights to have lyrics in it! This event is actually after the events in Under Tides. The line "The Golden Age will Retrun Again" comes from the fact that Iberia was a booming nation of progress when both Liberi(bird) and Ægir(fish) could stand side by side until The Silence came where the sea engulfed part of Iberia and the Seaborn took over that land. Now it's a nation full of fear for people like the Ægir who some they see as Seaborn rather than people. They will never be able to reclaim the Golden Age due to their discrimination against the Ægir since they were the reason the Golden Age came to be.

Time to connect observations to lore again!
Fun fact, the name of this event is Stultifera Navis, the Ship of Fools. The game lets you select this as the background music for the event screen, and the title of this song is Stultifer Cantus, the Song of Fools.
0:56 "Things are not great in this current moment, there is something going on here that is kind of violent and very dilapidated and twisted."
    - The event where this is set has you fighting against the Seaborn, creatures whose nature is to consume and assimilate everything it encounters, and where there is opposition, they evolve to handle said opposition, which makes them an existential threat to humanity as a whole.
1:59 "This is about something sad/nefarious/evil/fear/violence." - This is boss music, the main enemy is a more evolved Seaborn, one that can speak and think for itself, a Herald of the Seaborn,"The Endspeaker, Will of We Many". In this part, most of the cast on the Stultifera Navis is actively hunting the Endspeaker, so it has the violence part in spades. Also, again, the Seaborn try to assimilate and consume everything, there are also worshippers of the Seaborn, the Church of the Deep, who would gladly help accelerate their goal, so there's the nefarious bit. The Seaborn themselves are not evil though, they just follow their instinct, still a threat that needs to be dealt with.
3:00 "The Golden Age Will Return Again is a big theme here. Some sort of apocalypse happened. A big plot point important to Skadi or the Hunters and sort of reclaiming their turf and returning the world to what it once was." """*I'm just guessing*"""
    - This song is about, obviously, the desire to return something to its Golden Age, but it's not just for one thing. Iberia (Arknights' Spain) was a major power on Terra, a warmongering nation that even other military superpowers were struggling to even just contain, it was an empire, it helped that Aegirians (a race of people who lived in the sea and have fish characteristics on their bodies) went on land and eventually integrated into their society, one of which was a man named Breogan. Breogan became the Shipwright for Iberia, the one who created Iberia's grand fleets and helped it become a naval superpower. He also helped create the Eyes of Iberia, lighthouses and communications centers meant to help ships navigate. Then, an event called the Profound Silence happened, where all but one of the Eyes were incapacitated or outright destroyed, ships were lost out at sea, towns were lost on land, Iberia almost collapsed. Now the Iberian Inquisition would gladly fight and die for a chance at another Golden Age.
There is also the Aegir, also the name of the nation, whose technology are beyond what even the most advanced countries on land have by decades or even centuries, they were a prosperous nation, but then the Seaborn started encroaching on their territories, they fought like hell, even creating the Abyssal Hunters as a way to directly combat them. They fought until they found the Seaborn "God" Ishar-mla, and they "killed" it, at the cost of most of the Abyssal Hunters' lives, but the Seaborn moved on, and it was all for nothing. Now Aegir is struggling to survive against the Seaborn, and the Abyssal Hunters are out on land trying to find a way to help their distant countrymen, trying to give Aegir another chance at peace and prosperity.
You can also say that this is about Gran Faro, the town a part of the event is set in. This town had the last working Eye of Iberia, they did their best trying to restart it, but all who tried were lost. The town was once a proud one, every single citizen ready to do all they can to help revive the Iberian Golden Age, now it is but another isolated town on the Iberian coast, and it has become a battlefield between humanity and the Seaborn during the event, it's most likely abandoned now, guarded by the Inquisition and a Penal Battalion to make sure it doesn't become a proper beachhead for the Seaborn.
This can also be said of Captain Alfonso and First Mate Garcia, the two remaining crew of the Stultifera Navis. They were stuck at sea for 60 years, where they consumed the Seaborn they hunted, and in turn, have been slowly turning into Seaborn themselves. All of their crew are dead, from self-inflicted methods, the Seaborn killing them, becoming Seaborn themselves, or being executed by Alfonso as an act of mercy. Now they are the only ones who remain, they try to preserve the ship the best they can, as a reminder of the Golden Age. Some have even said that this song is about these two characters longing for the Golden Age, trying their best to cling to not only their past, but their Humanity.
4:46 "It's unrelenting, non-stop, it feels like we're just in a constant state of tension and battle againt the end of the world/the consumption of the world. It has this feeling of "No, the Golden Age WILL return again, I must propel myself forward.""
-...I don't even have to add anything to this, just read the text wall above. First sentence is straight up just the story for the Seaborn storyline, second sentence is just Stultifera Navis in a nutshell.
    "Just guessing, guys." riiiiiiiiiight.
Also, just to add, Alfonso and Garcia are a couple, and even though they don't have much screentime together, every interaction is filled with their love for one another. Their love for one another is what kept them alive and Human for 60 years. Alfonso has had his entire arm turn Seaborn, and is threatening to assimilate the rest of his body and mind, Garcia's body has become fully Seaborn at this point, no human features remain, and yet, they are still human. They would rather die as humans together than become Seaborn. They are the best couple I've ever seen in any piece of media. These two have like, less than a hundred lines of text that have them interacting or talking about one another, in an event where it'd take you the better part of a day just reading the story, and they still made an impact this good. Actually have some tears in my eyes now that I've fully digested their entire situation. The entire story and cast of Stultifera Navis is just top tier.
Finally, I shall propose the theory that the Meatball is actually playing Arknights and is trying to hide that fact from us.

Ishar’mla is no “complete” god but more like a super-sized seaborn that can control the rest of the seaborne like a hivemind. Why? Let me explain. In arknights there are “Leviathans” but are otherwise known as Behemoths. They are “Genesezoics” whom are great oceanic entities that are similar to the Feranmuts (which would imply they are merely fragments of a higher being, but seeing how powerful and established they already are, I sometimes doubt that). Even though they are similar to the Feranmuts, they are distinctly different but may share a common origin.
Currently there are numerous Leviathans hibernating within aincient ruins beneath the oceans. If they were to all wake up, the world's chances of living through this will be super low.
Among the Leviathans there are 4 specific individuals titled as “The Firstborn” who are the ancestors of all seaborn, all of which can wield abilities similar to the Feranmuts.
      The 4 of them are:
Caerula Arbor, the "Entangling Vine": Representing the power of Growth, the Arbor is a dying tree-like Leviathan who had lost its struggle in controlling the kin, causing it to fall from grace from We Many. Currently, it is acting as mere food source that nourishes microscopic Seaborn cells in the ocean. On the other hand, some of its cells has become a part of Mizuki through the hands of Cicero. If the Arbor lost its struggle against Ishar-mla again, it will fall back into its dormant form. But if it wins, it will follow Mizuki's conscience and make peace with the land by leading them to search for a new habitat in outer space.
The "Primitive Pulse": Representing the power of Subsisting, the "Primitive Pulse" is a swarm of plankton-like Seaborn cells that substance their existence. As it has merged with the ocean, the Pulse is completely immortal to a point that, in a metaphorical sense, it could only be killed by "drying up the ocean." The Pulse is said to be the cause of the Silence of Iberia as members of the Church of the Deep attempted to revive it. If merged with Ishar-mla, it will bring a worldwide Silence across the entire Terra.
Unnamed Firstborn: Though unnamed, this Firstborn represents the power of "Breeding" that helps breed new Seaborn.
      Ishar-mla, the "Corrupting Heart"
Sourced this from the Arknights Wiki so it should be mostly accurate.

Everyone is fighting on despite the hopeless odds for that small chance that everyone will make it out in the end.
And the biggest thing about all this is that this is just one of many sideplots happening besides the main story in Arknights!

All I have to say is that your analysis of the song is BRILLIANT!
This song is the boss theme for the current undergoing event called Stultifera Navis (The Ship of Fools) which is a continuation of the Under Tides event's storyline.
Once again, we're following our dear Abyssal Hunters, who have Aegir origins, but this time, they are not "alone", they are followed by 2 other major characters: a young orphan Aegir who served as a nurse in an Iberian Church called Jordi and our favourite Liberi Inquisitor Irene.
Just like some other comments said, the Golden Age the song is about describes a time when Iberia was an extremely advanced country (not as much as Aegir, but far more advanced than the other countries of Terra) due to Liberi and Aegir collaborating, a time that is now gone because of an event called the Profound Silence.
I personally find that this theme, even tho completely epic and grandiose, hides also behind it a small part of desperation: just like you said, a fight against a force that will consume the world. This is really telling because of some informations and confirmations we get as the player: the threat of the Seaborn is unstoppable, it is in constant evolution and can, at best, be slowed but never stopped. The other information we get is a big one and explains the desperation even more: Skadi has the blood of Ishar-mla, the goddess of the Seaborn, inside her. And sooner or later, she will awaken to her kins.
One last thing I wanted to add: the lyrics of this theme are EXTREMELY well written for a simple reason. This song was written in the old times as a sea shanty to keep the morale for Iberians sea farers, as a symbol of hope for the Golden Age to return again... Which is happening during the event because, in Stultifera Navis, we see Irene (a Liberi and Inquisitor) cooperate and cast aside her judgements about Aegir. She is the new generation of Inquisitor after all and may be the one who will change their faith at its core for the best.

It first feels like a glorious sea shanty, but with the lore behind, it's actually very grim to me.
It is sung by Iberian sailors who died ages ago : since the engine of their ship was taken down, it kept floating aimlessly until the end of their life.
And while their country was indeed one of the most glorious ones, it still didn't stand a chance against the sea. So much that it's now a country filled of terrorized people.
Knowing this, it make this song pretty haunting, since we're facing the same threat as they did, in the same ambiance, and our future is as uncertain as theirs was.
Still, if we don't want it to consume us, we can only fight the sea back.
And so we can only hope, in the name of Iberia, that the Golden age will return again...

One thing I find interesting is the contrast between this track (which is the boss theme of the Stultifera Navis event, the "sequel" event to Under Tides) and the boss theme of Under Tides. They fit so well in the context of their respective events.
Under Tides is an event about Skadi venturing to a town called Sal Viento where things are just OFF. The people don't act right, the atmosphere is foreign, and it's our first real introduction to the seaborn, Eldritch horror creatures who we've heard about-and how they're the biggest threat to life on Terra, on par with Originium, the Big Bad of the setting-but never seen before. These creatures don't belong in this world, and they've encroached upon this coastal Iberian town. As a result, the music is very distant, eerie, filled with unnatural sounds and instruments, and lots of open space. It FEELS otherworldly, with the threat that that implies.
Stultifera Navis, on the other hand, takes place partly at a different coastal Iberian town called Gran Faro, partly on a ship, the titular Stultifera Navis. This town is a bit off, but MUCH more "normal" than Sal Viento. People act mostly as you would expect. On top of that, the town and the Stultifera are both very historically important to Iberia. The town was a city that tried to rebuild itself after the Profound Silence (basically the seaborn apocalypse localized to Iberia that reduced the nation to its current sorry state) but got infiltrated by the Church of the Deep, supporters of the seaborn. The Stultifera was the last ship that was made and set sail before the Profound Silence-which also stopped all sea travel-happened, even though it is now a breeding ground for the seaborn. Both of these are KNOWN entities, corrupted by the seaborn they may be, so the music is a lot more solid. However, the threat of the seaborn is now more concretely known, so the music is more directly threatening as a result.
In addition, the Stultifera is still crewed by the first mate, transformed into a seaborn in all but mind, and the captain, only partially transformed. They've both been holding the seaborn at bay, and they're both still alive from before the Profound Silence, committed to the restoration of Iberia to its former glory. Hence, The Golden Age Will Return Again.
Both of these events are some of the best of Arknights, which already has near universally amazing writing, music, and sound design. As much as I might hate the dodge enemies from Stultifera Navis, lol.

It was fun watching you get pumped up with this music, the energy in it certainly gets the blood racing. You're quite close again with guessing the context of the song, with the exception that this song relates more to the country the event takes place in and its people, many of them clinging to their past glory (before an apocalyptical event known as the Great Silence) while this event centers on some characters who hope to reclaim that glory into the future. Of course, the tragedy and violence you can hear in the instrumentation for the song relates to the fact they probably never will, as they are up against insurmountable odds, and are doomed to see the remaining relics of the past be destroyed over time as well...
Glad to see you enjoyed it, and I believe you'd find Awaken (from the same event) interesting as well. Looking forward to more awesome music!

As others have mentioned, Stultifera Navis translates to "Ship of Fools" (and is actually an allegory from Plato). In the story, this ship sinks, and while it is a terrible loss for both factions as they no longer have any remnants of old Iberian civilization, the sinking of the "Ship of Fools" signifies the Carmen finally somewhat seeing the Iberians were foolish to believe that they could bring about the Golden Age again alone, and the start of mending the relationship between the Aegir and the Iberians by inducting Jordi/Lumen, an Aegir, into the Iberian Inquisition. It will be a long and hard road for them all, which they acknowledge but one day the Golden Age *will* return again by mending this relationship.

  • @JullOxW
    @JullOxW Před rokem +16

This boss theme comes from the follow-up event of Under Tides : Stultiferas Navis ("The Ship of Fools"). We still follow the Abyssal Hunters (Skadi, Gladiia, Specter...) but this time it's Specter who's the protagonist.
I like to think the singer of this song is Alfonso, the Stultifera's captain, and a man who kept fighting against the seaborn corruption for over 50 years on that same ship.
The Golden Age is a period in the past of Iberia where, thanks to the help of Ægir people and their knowledge, Iberia technology and overall country grew a lot. Then the Silence (basically a huge naturel disaster from the sea) destroyed Iberia's greatness and the country is since then is a poor state and its pride (and fear) keep it from rebuilding itself properly.
Yet, the danger of the sea is still present, and its growth never stop...
As for the rest, you all guessed it (as usual lol)!
Again, a few songs I'd love to see you react to, and I can only recommend you try the game for yourself at some point. Thanks for the good content 🙏

This is the magic of Arknights. It's a tower defense game, which is hard to tell the story of what is happening with its gameplay, so they let the music tell it. No two songs are the same and even with simple non-plot events there is a story to be told about what it's about. What you're fighting for and what is in stake should you fail, all told within a 4-5 minute song.

Great analysis yet again, for the Stultifera Cantus! You're pretty much spot on with the themes of the song, though it's from a continuation from Under Tides; Stultifera Navis, that looks more into the (hopeful) recovery of a grand technologically advanced flagship lost at sea, for which the event is named. And the Abyssal Hunters attempting to return home.
Things most certainly go awry due to terrifying calls from the deep, and the prejudices that certain characters have to try and overcome.... And aboard the Stultifera Navis, the Ship of Fools, the Abyssal Hunters want to use it to return Ægir, but the Iberian Inquisition wish to bring it home to their nation... But there's an even deeper, and far more dangerous mystery to solve, and fears to overcome...
    Keep up the good work!

Interesting tidbit: at some point in the song the lyrics actually change to "before" the golden age will return again.
Don't know if that changes any analysis, but that always gives me this feeling that it's a conflict of perspectives, and that the Golden Age is more an imposing and terrifying era rather than a "golden" one.
I think this also trails with some in game lore, how the main conflict is against a church who praises these seaborn creatures. Meaning the golden age may be something that they're aiming for, total seaborn superiority and purification, while everyone else is standing up against that imposing future.

This song is called Stultifera Cantus. The Song of Fools.
Also fun fact: these events are all a chian reaction to an event in the distant past, called the Defeaning Silence. Based on clues, this event was a natural disaster from the sea where the water suddenly retreated from shore and was relatively silent until it dragged a large section of the country into the sea. This is of course, a tsunami, like is thought to have wiped out the mythical city of Atlantis off the area that is now the Sahara desert in the real world. They actually found ruins showing that there ws a large city out there that was detroyed by a mass water event.

So, a lot of the fans have spoken about the in-story context of this music, but let's talk about the context it gives to the boss stage(s).
The boss stage is, of course, in the event's titular Stultifera Navis, the haunted Iberian ship that's now infested with the seaborn. The creaking on the background of this song is thus appropriate. Our boss for this event is the Endspeaker, who not just always appears at the start of the battle (here signaled by the sudden drop of the sea shanty's lyrics) but also has a grand total of *four* phases.
Of course, unlike most bosses, Endspeaker isn't the main threat of its stages. Let me explain.
Phase 1 is... a weakling. Any decent damage dealer will kill it. However, unlike most bosses, rather than bring up the next lifebar, Endspeaker will disappear and signal for the next wave of Seaborn to attack. Some of these Seaborn carry spheres, which they'll drop upon defeat. Once everyone on that wave is gone, Endspeaker will absorb the first of the dropped spheres and then reappear wherever it'd died in a stronger form, taking some buffs from the absorbed kin. Rinse and repeat, until you beat Phase 4.
Not the first boss in this game to do things that way, but unlike the boss of Invitation to Wine's raid pastiche, Endspeaker's absorption gimmick means you have to be careful about which of the sphere-carrying enemies die first to avoid making the phases harder for you. Also, enemies will appear alongside the boss, and many of them are quite powerful, with their own gimmicks you've had to deal with during the event.
The song is unrelenting because the stage it's on is unrelenting. Annoying stage gimmicks you've had to work around or neutralize all progress at various intervals and yet you have to be ready for when the boss returns in its stronger phase. Sometimes it feels like the song, rather than singing of a glory that will never come back, is cheering for a golden age that is yet to arrive and for its emissary that keeps growing to better make it happen.

Love your takes and theories on the music you react to and definitely looking forward to more arknights stuff to come.
While this ost definitely has to do with the abyssal it actually is the soundtrack of the people of Iberia, a sea nation that was devastated through one single event during the height of their golden age, through the sea terrors that the Abyssal Hunters also face. However they are actually quite different factions, which can also be seen in their approach to the problem. The Abyssal Hunters are cold blooded monster hybrid killing machines, with their sole purpose to kill the seaborne and also at the moment to return home to their nation in the ocean. Meanwhile the people of Iberia are so very proud of their past glory and won't, or rather can't give up on it returning. They are full of passion and motivation as you can hear in this song while the Abyssal Hunter song had those eerie sounds and high pitched singing. They face a common enemy but one is a group of elites while the other is a nation of people who dream of the return of bygone days, stubbornly clingin onto whats left in the worst times the nation has ever seen - and to no real avail, because the ocean can only be held back, but never conquered

Glad you're covering more arknights music, the game itself migh not be for everyone, but holycrap I've never seen a worldbuilding this deep and diverse since Tolkien's and star wars (before disney and amazon destroys them of course)
Even just by hearing the music itself you feel just how big the scope of the game is in terms of worldbuilding, from standchen Classical German orchestras, to the depressing russian Lullabye and Requiem, these music has a real life referenced in them, with standchen basically the game's interpretation of the original, and lullabye basically telling Russian bedtimes folklore story, and if you haven't heard it yet, Requiem's lyrics is a paraphrase of a famous russian poet made by Anna Akhmatova, telling stories about the horrors of the ethnic cleansing called the "Great purge" in stalin era...
you know that the game's story is good if they dwelve this deep for Historical references.

The Fool's Song or Dsdevr(music file name)/The Golden Age Will Turn Again is about the Iberia's sailor retailation to The Great Silence, a, youve guess it, a great catastrophy of seabornes sudden ressurgence/attack to their country. While in Under Tides the Sirens or rather the Abyssal Hunters sang about the dangers and beauty of the ocean, in Stultifera Navis, the sailors chants the humanity's will of conquering and taking back the lost "Golden Age" of Iberia that was taken from them.

Honestly, even though you say you didn't have a lot to add, I loved the absolute journey your expressions went on as you listened to everything. It almost felt like you were seeing off into the world of Arknights, and watching the battle happen before your eyes.
I think if you wanted to keep up the theme of Under Tides/Stultifera Navis music, then the official Arknights channel actually released some character-themed songs around the event as well. "Awaken" is about another Abyssal Hunter named Specter, "Rapier" is about one of the people helping the Abyssal Hunters (not to go too deeply into it lmao), and "Bluish Light" is about an ordinary young man pulled into this extraordinary event over his head.
But honestly, as you can tell, any Arknights music is good music, ha ha.

For my interpretation, after reading the event.
I think the line "Golden Age will return again" actually refers to the Stultifera Navis ship - who, according to its Captain, Alfonso, is the remnant of HIS Iberia, the Iberia during the age before the Great Silence.
The "Golden Age will return again," I personally interpret this as the Ægirs and Iberia looking for the Stultifera Navis ship (the representation of the Golden Age of Captain Alfonso) and finally dock it after 60 years (...will return again).

I like you finally react this ost, thank you so much marco! As arknights player, I like your interpretation about this ost.
As usual, I will recommend you to react another arknights ost such as minima, awaken, or towerfierce (specially minima and towefierce since many arknight players like it)

Also The Golden Age Will Return Again is from the currently still ongoing Stultifera Navis event
the event is mainly focus on another Abyssal Hunter member, Laurentina , operator code name Specter, also know by the community as hot shark nun
    An Iberian Inquisitor, Irene
Some medic operator whose name is Lumen who I didn’t read the lore on tbh
And the rest of the Abyssal hunters Gladiia and Skadi

Under Tides ost represent the rising of sea creatures, they are singing, that's why the voice is kinda like a song of the siren. and for the stultifera navis is like a representation of humandkind struggling against those seaborns.
and when you say about the apocalypse, that's pretty spot on guess. because the story of abyssal hunters would still continue as a main story in the future, the dev teased it in the recent dev stream. what else what kinda theme of abyssal hunters soundtracks we would get in the future, it is very worth to wait

  • @boat378
    @boat378 Před rokem +1

I love this theme so much. It's sort of a continuation of the Under Tides theme, where before it was despair and dread but now this is the redemption arc. 'It's not over, we can pull this back. The Golden Age Will Return Again.'
EDIT: I wrote the above while halfway through the video. I'm happy to hear there will be more Arknights to come! 😄 I hope you'll cover some of the character themes. Lee's theme (And Yet It Wanes) is probably my favorite, super funky and reminds me of a classic Chinese action film.

This song was amazing. And yes I do love me a good sea shanty! A very pleasant surprise, it was as I grinded through the event.
If you have the time and/or the desire to do so, I highly recommend "Radiant" from Arknights as well. It's a very different feel from this and other Arknights songs. It was used for the promotional trailer for another event a while ago that was about as big as this one, though not as heavy in the world lore and more about character growth and backstories.
It's not an exaggeration to say that Radiant and the trailer it came from got me (re)addicted to Arknights. I had stopped actively playing it for some months and after this, well, I don't think I've missed a day playing it for about 6 months.
