26FT ROLLBACK DOING THINGS IT SHOULD AND SOME THINGS IT PROBABLY SHOULDNT!

  • I BOUGHT THIS ROLLBACK ALMOST A YEAR AGO. IT NEEDED SOME WORK FROM DAY ONE. I DID A GOOD BIT OF REPAIRS IN THE FIRST FEW MONTS AND CONTINUED WITH SMALLER REPAIRS HERE AND THERE AFTER. IT REALLY HAS BECOME A VERY RELIABLE AND VERSATILE TRUCK FOR ME. I KNOW AS LONG AS I OWN IT, IT WILL STILL NEED BE MORE REPAIRS. I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT AT ALL. HOWEVER, A TIME COMES WHEN YOU HAVE TO EVALUATE WHAT YOU HAVE, WHAT IT COSTS YOU, WHAT IT SAVES YOU AND IF THERE WAS A BETTER SET UP. THAT IS WHERE I AM WITH THIS TRUCK. IT CAN CARRY ABOUT 11,000LBS LEGALLY. THE BED IS CAPABLE OF MORE. I THINK THIS BED WOULD BE BETTER SERVED ON A 32,000LB GVWR CHASSIS. A FEW UP GRADES TO ME WOULD BE AIR BRAKES, AIR RIDE AND AN AIR RIDE SEAT. I HAVE JUST THE CHASSIS FOR THIS BED. THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT RENT SPACE IN THE BACK OF MY MIND.

Even though that Jerr-Dan bed isn't a match made in heaven, it works for you! I ran a 4300 DT466 with a 6 Speed and a Chevron Bed that was way faster to load, but the heavier stuff would bog down the winch and the lift. I don't see yours doing that! May take a bit longer to load, but you are sure going to get it loaded without stress! LOL😁

As a tow company owner i say ya did a great job on ford and your truck fits your needs so who cares that its not a show truck . Only thing i would say to watch is on the winchout if you had controls on passenger side it would be better to have used those to keep you out of path if cable broke . But lookin at truck some of those older beds only had driver side controls
Wish i had 4 or 5 operators with your skill and common sense

    • @j.c.smithprojects

your right. it only has driver side controls. if i had known i needed to winch that truck out, i would have brought a short truck (like my little f450) and just pulled it. i dropped the truck at one of my properties and then went to get the tires at another. i guess that is just how life works.....

Many years ago when I helped do repossessions we ended up dragging a lot of cars up the bed. We always carried some soapy water in a dish soap bottle to make things slide a bit better on the bed. There were many times that wouldn't work to get them off the truck and we would put the snatch block on the back lip of the truck and snake the cable back to the farthest point of the front of the towed vehicle and attach it there and drag the vehicle off just as handily as we did on.
The only time that really backfired was with cars that were low such as Corvettes or flat tires to try to keep it from being towed. Roll backs weren't real wide spread back then and not thought of as much as hook type wreckers. I guess folks thought 4 flat tires would scare us off. I was a mean little undesirable back then and usually carried the protection for the driver that prevented most altercations. The only time it didn't I left a 12 guage impression on a guy who had already tried to shoot us. When the sheriff got there he said the guy was trouble and probably deserved it. At least the guy had some cool scars to show the guys while he was doing his 40 years times two for attempted premeditated murder.
I'm glad most criminals are bad shots.
Geez....... that was a long time ago!

Its a great truck for what you do!! And as you said since you fix your stuff and you are not driving it 8 hours every day nor paying a driver it works fine for what you do! It doesn't carry a $60 - $70,000 price tag as if you bought a nearly new truck with nearly new bed and equipment so you are risking less capital and still getting the job done!
