- On May 24th through May 27th, A group of 13 hikers including Erik Halfacre of Last Frontier Adventure Club and Carine McCandless, sister of Christopher McCandless, made the trek to bus 142 on the Stampede Trail.

My son's name is Chris. This was one of his favorite movies. It inspired my son to go out in the wilderness as often as he could with his dog Princess. Because he had a family these were just day or weekend trips but they gave him peace and a different outlook on life. My son passed away 2 1/2 yrs ago doing what he loved. Exploring new places, he suffered a major heart attack at age 45. Carine, if you read this please know that I'm very sorry for the loss of your brother. I hope this hike brought you some peace. My family and I recently made our trek and it brought me some sense of closure, whatever that means.
In my opinion Carine is as much of an inspiration as her brother. It is obvious that she is a very strong woman and it was great to hear her talking about the trail. It is obvious that she really cares about people and wants to make sure that everyone stays safe. It's so awesome of her to hike out there and to share her experience on camera. I'm sure it is very hard on her emotionally to go to the bus.

Christopher is lucky to have a sister like you. Keep his journey alive. I travel around in late 80s and 90s never crossed ways with Christopher. But we were all on our own adventures.
Carine you look like Chris and carry his memory. I am so happy someone found your brother so y’all had closure and to share his story. I do believe people are so inspired by your story and want to feel some connection with your brother. I know I would. Thank you for sharing your journey to Chris’ memory.

Carine, so strong to do this. I loved your brothers enthusiasm for adventure. I did the same in the 1980's. The quest to be independent drove me. I have so much in common with Chris. My life hasn't mounted to much sense then. I am trying to write, but my experiences are not very interesting. Take care.
Carine, sorry for the loss of your brother. I hope this trip helps you understand your brothers journey. Modern humans are spoiled and have no idea what it is like to have to hunt and gather food for survival. These comments are left by folks that can jump in their cars and run through a drive thru of their choice at any time of the day or night. Your brother knew what true freedom felt like. He wasn't a slave to the dollar bill. He was a real man.
I went on Memorial Day 2016, conditions were pretty close but the river was a bit more raging. Luckily enough, we were still able to cross there and back, but even in May there is a danger of the river rising in just one day from an acceptable level to an uncrossable one. The experience can't really be replicated in many other places, and the place deserves a lot of respect. I can't describe what we felt out there, but what I am rather glad about is that litter hadn't really piled up in the two years since this video was made. Overall the perfect four day trip (we shortened it to three and wore ourselves out the first day getting to the bus). This trip is not for a hiker who doesn't at least have someone with them who knows what they're doing.

I feel like Christopher was like a brother to me! I sympathize very much with his wild adventure spirit. I ran away from home several times when I was a teenager, and I even moved to the USA for the same reason of adventure. I even joined the ARMY so I could have travel around the world, so I did... Now, I know about 30 states and several countries around the world, but I feel the need to go all the way to Alaska and see for myself "The magic bus" where Chris used to live. I'm the same age of Chris and I lived in California at the same time when he did... I strongly wish I met him back in the early 90's so I could be his journey buddy. God bless you Christopher!!

Seeing the trail makes me think of, the early Pioneers of America and the 'unknown' West. The trail Carine and fellow hikers were on was very desolate and no so easy. So I can only imagine what people went through toughing it through the wild west in the 1800's. Respect to every one of them. Sad for Chris RIP.
The trash stored behind that bus is exactly an indicator of the types of people this story attracts and why the locals do not like the people who come to see this bus. For some reason, a bunch of rookies want to go exactly where chris did and recreate the journey, and they leave their trash because they do not care or have any actual respect for nature let alone for the person or his place of death. Trash left everywhere like that is the sign of green horns pure and simple, if they can bring that shit in when it contained stuff like food or liquid and was heavier, why can't they bring it out when its empty and light?

I totally agree, I think it's quite a shame, I think many that go , think, as I am guilty myself, that is a walk in the park and find it kind of incomprehensible that someone could possibly run into trouble there, so they drag a ton of stuff, to be prepared, not realizing the impact of it. I myself thought, "what's so hard?" " just go prepared". But after doing the research, and watching and listening to others, I don't think I seriously could, and I would NEVER want to leave my unnecessary impact on such a beautiful place

It's in a Alaskan museum, some people feel the bus is haunted even because some people feel there's his spirit in and around the bus and some of those that say haunted used to stay the night when it was in the wild.
I will never get to go out there, but if could afford it I would most definitely go. I found out about this just the other day on CZcams, I never seen the movie. So with that said it made me cry, and feel sorry for Chris. But then after thinking about it, I think God had a different Journey for Chris in heaven, And I hope I will be able to see him when I get there.. I would like this comment to get to his sister Carine. Because if I was younger I would do this trip by all means. I'm 62 and have bad knees and a bad back. And if I could make it to Alaska, It would be just to see the bus, and then ball my eyes out. I have been watching and looking up stuff on CZcams for the last 5 days and still watching all the CZcams videos. So please thank Carine to let this story go public. That is what inspired me to want to go out there but I can't. Thanks guys for sharing this and God be with you all. God bless.

Thank you for posting. I read the book and watched the movie. Carine McCandless, thank you for keeping Chris is story/experience alive. I was deeply touched by his experiences. I was in a journey of my own when Chris was out there in the wild. I had no idea who he was then. Not until 2012.
You can really tell Carine wants people to not only be inspired by her brother, but learn from, which I think Chris would want too. I like how she stressed several times that the trip was only possible because conditions aligned the right way, and even then it’s still a gnarly hike. Chris himself eventually came to the conclusion himself he shouldn’t be out there, I think he would want people to learn from his story that survival and backpacking are two very different things.
I can’t believe that some hikers have never heard of “Leave no trace”... so disappointing.

To me this is what CZcams is supposed to be about. Not knocking off copyrighted material which I love to listen to
I am not sure moving the bus will stop some people from still trying to make the trek out there but certainly cut down the numbers. Hopefully this will reduce the number of rescues that are needed and my sincere hope no one else will lose their life trying to cross the river.
Thanks for sharing the video. I have my all respect for th family, the crew who made de movie, and for Chris. I saw the movie many times and always make me think about life, and be a better person. So he stands an example of a life's possibilities.

Made this hike in 2012 when I was stationed in AK. It is amazing.
The bus was recently airlifted by National Guard Helicopter to safe storage. Many needed to be rescued and/or died attempting to reach the bus.
Good idea because that bus shouldn't be blamed for more lost lives.
Veranika Nikanava drowned crossing the Teklanika River on July 25, 2019. She and her husband of one month spent two nights on The Bus. On the return hike, the river had risen. Her husband made it across. Thinking it safe after he made it across she then made her attempt. She slipped, he tried to help but his legs were weak from his prior attempt, she was dragged under. He survived. She was 24 years old. RIP.

Like the video to share and spread awareness, this should be preserved best we can not abuse it because you can.

Very sorry for your loss. Wanted to hike in to the bus. 2015? Made it to the end of stampede road. At 60 was not going to do it alone .
It became almost a shrine to Chris and it's a very sad story and brilliant film.
Six years later 'The Bus' flys out under a US Army Chinook. Am betting nobody ever thought that would happen. Very sad to see it go but rescues and fatalities have become to much. Difficult situation just like life........
Why not everyone takes one or two pieces of trash and get it outta there. respect the place where someone died.this is not Mount Everest it can be done!

It's a memorial and should be kept up, not left to deteriorate. However, keeping the environment clean is important, too.

The bus was abandoned in 1961 and had become an emergency shelter for those using the backcountry to recreate or hunt.
I am and the story behind is so intriguing.

It seems like Chris wanted to clear his head and took off on an adventure. I see his point of view about living and knowing material things can cause serious problems within a family. It does not necessarily bring happiness. I so wish he had of survived because I know he would of made a difference in the world! RIP Chris. I have a son (25) yrs old who is now a Marine vet. Chris reminds me of him. My Son has a support dog that he rescued from a shelter. Chris donating his money was very kind of him
I loved your comment. I believe that Chris' life, although cut devastatingly short, was lived in such a remarkable way, that it amassed a story so legendary that it has actually been life-changing for countless of people who have become fascinated with Chris' crowning life-work. He had a dauntless amount of courage to voyage through all of the tremendous adventures that ended up becoming his ultimate purpose in life. He left behind a dearly beloved legacy that will live on in his honor for the rest of eternity. By the way - Just wanted to give an extra BIG SEMPER FI to you and to your son!! As the daughter of a Marine Vet myself - I'm sure you must have been one HELL of an outstanding mother to have raised a United States Marine!!

She looks so much like her brother, her brother his on his next adventure, for all we know already learnt from that one and on to the next one from there. He never made mistakes. Thats how you learn. Without his passing.
Just truly inspiring. Both Chris and Carine. And the crew of course. Just finished her book. As most people feel, I have a very strong connection for reasons I don't know. I've camped for years, hiked a bunch of times, but I work in my office every day. Yet I keep combing areas for information, maybe even answers, that I don't know the questions. I'm sure this sounds strange but that's just how I feel about this. I felt the deep connection before I had seen any of Carines information but after her input it just seems that much more. I'm about their age yet their strength seems insurmountable. As if my life is just starting and hers has run about 100 laps. I don't know. I can't figure it out why I have this feeling.

This video and Carine were very moving. I read Into the Wild when it first came out. In my opinion, while it was well written, Carine's book is much better. If you want to know the inside story of Chris and his family, read her book. I wish I'd had the opportunity to meet and get to know Chris. His background was not all that different from mine. Had I known him at the time he was traveling across the country, I may well have gone to Alaska with him. Fly among the stars, Chris, and thank you, Carine, for this video and your book. Kathy Gregg

Hahaha those GIANT packs and people forgot raincoats, gloves, and various other essentials during a trip to Alaska lol the Pacific Northwest isn't known colloquially as, "the rainiest place on Earth," for nothing, you know!
I'd be willing to wager there's plenty of stuff crammed in to a couple of those massive packs that you didn't even need during your overnight excursion away from the bus 10 miles and back.
Space that could have been easily freed up for things like gloves, and raincoats, etc.
Of course, having Chris' sister is probably the smartest thing you could have brought with you, so you definitely get bonus points for that. 👍

The bus was manufactured by 'International Harvesters' presumably at their old factory in Eccleshill, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. From my village to the wilds of Alaska, I love that thought.
Chris died because he was a novice. I say this because as a retired Backcountry Ranger living months and weeks on end in the wilderness it can have hazards. One does understand that beauty can kill, weather, food supplies, injuries all are key factors as well.
1) Chris had a 22 rifle in Grizzly / wolf country, not very bright, no wilderness vet would recommend that ever.
2) While meat will keep you alive, prolonged eating of meat alone is hard on the body.
3) Chris didn't have snares, fishing tackle or knowledge of preserving meat by smoking it. All signs of a armature .
4) Chris didn't take heed by others more experienced than him, that was a deadly mistake as well.
I wish I could've made the hike up to the bus.. maybe I will get to see it in the museum now
It took real guts for a sister to make that trek.
They moved the bus now because of to many rescues they needed to do.
I think even Christopher McCandless would even say ,that what he attempted was dumb, to say the least. His actions proved fatal. His actions however , started a national conversation(possibly world wide) about the dangers involved in this sort of excursion.That's where I think the inspiration comes from. There also was no cell phones, or "social media" back in those days.
The thing is just knowing Chris was there and what he went through people go just to relive what he lived while beeing outthere on his own. Feeling his presence and wanting him to be there..IT was a mistake what he did because yes we need money to survive. And he hated thinking we need to depend on money to live. I just feel so bad that he wanted to go back after putting himself to the test and im sure he learned his leason. But then he couldnt make it back. Rest in peace Chris.
It's funny to see at 9:45 the "The Dahus" sticker, that Belongs to a LOCAL Virginia band. Just to see that, really makes you think how many people it had to hit.
Good God it wasn't Chris's intention to perish. He was adventurous beyond most people.
Thanks for posting this. A story I read recently about Christopher Knight lead me to the story of Christopher McCandless. Only one other story I've heard of so far has affected me like the story of Chris McCandless, and that was Joyce Carol Vincent. Aside from the fact that both of their stories resulted in death, there was not much else in common, but regardless, I still felt sad for both of them.
I just read the GQ article about Christopher Knight. What a bizarre story. Not sure what to make of it. Interesting for sure though.

always wanted to go to Alaska just never took the chance when i was younger i remember by aunt and uncle telling me i should go and find work on a fishing boat of some kind there son ray my cousin lived in fairbanks alaska and was a bushpilot he was studying for years to become a commercial pilot until cancer took him , im married now and live in oklahoma maybe one day me and my wife will make it there but thank you for sharing this video

thats why it was left there in the first place for people who needed shelter . Not only should it remain the way it was but it should not become a no trespassing tourist attraction either . that bus was never ment to become a tourist attraction it was ment to help people in need in case they got lost or something of the kind . If that bus wouldn't have been there for that exact reason Chris McCanless would have never been found by the hunters . That bus was ment for hickers and thats how it should remain si that the next Chris McCandless can take shelter in it . Cause there will be a next one be sure of it . That kid wasn't unique to have that mentality and lots of kids today have the same and many have done the same already its only a question of time before another gets trapped in that area again since many have already since Chris . remember that he wasn't the only one who was reported lost in the area that same time and the person was never found again . Chris was lucky to have found the bus so people could find his body . The other who got lost at the same time didn't get that same luck
@Brett Yarborough The bus was used for road maintenance crews on a local - the same road used to access the bus which is now not much of a road. The engines were removed at the same time the contractor installed the beds and wood fired stoves. This one had an axle break so they cut it loose from the Cat tractor pulling it where it sits to this day. It was used for a long time prior to Mr. McCandless as a back country shelter for hunters in the area - so yes, it's for shelter for anyone who comes across it, and though I agree silly people should be taking their trash out using the "leave no trace" attitude - it still should be open for people to visit. The majority of visitors do so because they feel a connection to the story - a positive connection. Just because a few are disrespectful, I don't believe that warrants ruining things for the majority.

I believe that everyone that talks about his story try’s to justify his actions through the lens of a struggle. The reality is that he was living an easier life than most. Our society has breed the idea that this is not a normal way to act, but the beauty and intrigue comes from a truth within that we all know. Some just choose to suppress it.

The bus has been removed now. Too many unprepared people getting in trouble trying to hike to the bus. It is now at the U of Fairbanks Museum of the North where it will eventually be on display.

+WILD THINGS> Perhaps, perhaps not. Trailblazers set solid paths for many to follow in science and the arts. There is no shame in following a route established by others particularly when one has no idea where to start. Many people have started on established routes, and have improved upon them. People shouldn't be over influenced by platitudes and romance in lieu sound judgement. The Donner Party chose their own path! There are just a few and established routes to the top of Mt. Everest; for good reason. Not many are trying to create a new route to the top there. Animals have survived for eons following established paths, it has served them well. Personally, I would hate to see every mother's son and daughter trying to create their own path in say a Yellowstone NP because it's a grand and rich in wisdom sounding platitude and reads so well in the Bible of the Wild. Even the poem about taking the less traveled road still follows an established path, albeit less traveled. Some of us follow paths simply because we are curious. We are not trying to reinvent the wheel, we are attempting just to know "why here," or "why there," a person did something. A kind of "getting into that person's head" to see what made them click.
Don't get me wrong, I would never want to stop innovation and exploration just that following paths created by others is fine. I may want to fly to the moon one day, but chances are I will follow in the paths well established by others if I ever get there.
I like this comment. Btw, I was one of the people in the video on this hike. Honestly, this trail is pretty lame. There are much more beautiful places to go in Alaska. Stampede Trail is a swampy, flat, long, mosquito ridden hike. The bus is cool and all, but honestly, once you get out there it’s like, “Cool bus. Now what?” Carine got a lot more out of this hike than anyone else possibly could - she essentially walked in her brother’s footsteps. Especially when she crossed the Tek River with us; that was a pretty emotional experience for her.
Boy Scouts leave no trace for a reason.
If you do make that Foot Bridge I hope you name it after Chris and Claire, it could save lives.

Its all good fun I've known mike since 96/97 when i worked at his family restaurant. We in my memories went through some dark times together back in the day. Crazy we ran into each other again way up here in alaska . I live In anchorage now. I hope to join on the next hike in on sep 8th If I can for my birthday gift to me. Happy trails

Just out of curiosity. Do you think Christopher's Alaskan journey would have been any different in today's world where he could get so much knowledge of what he needed to know on how to survive with just the flick of a thumb...or do you think he would have avoided the convenientness of phone's? Not that he did a bad job at surviving but in today's world he could have easily learned so much more in a matter of minutes.
All of these people think they know why he did everything the way he did but they really don’t know anything without living as Chris
