- LIVE COVERAGE: Fired Detective Brett Hankison on Trial - The Breonna Taylor Case
Happening in Court:
Cody Etherton - Breonna Taylor’s Neighbor
Sgt. Kyle Meany - Louisville PD
One of the police officers who opened fire on Kentucky woman Breonna Taylor is on trial, but not for killing her. Fired Louisville police Detective Brett Hankison faces jurors for allegedly endangering people in a nearby apartment during the tragic encounter on March 13, 2020. You can watch in the player above.
Police executed an allegedly flimsy search warrant on Taylor’s apartment that night for a drug case. Her boyfriend Kenneth Walker fired on them because they forced their way inside and he did not know they were law enforcement. He struck Sgt. Jon Mattingly in the leg. Mattingly and Detective Myles Cosgrove also opened fire with Hankison, but they did not get in trouble. Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who announced that the FBI determined that Cosgrove fired the fatal round, argued that these two were justified because they were firing back to protect themselves, while Hankison shot into a neighboring apartment.
But at least three grand jurors who reviewed the Taylor shooting said prosecutors never presented other charges than the wanton endangerment charges.
“They never gave us the opportunity to deliberate on anything but the charges for Hankison,” Juror 2 told CBS This Morning‘s Gayle King in an interview. “That was it. As a matter of fact, when they announced that those were the only charges, it was an uproar in that room. There were several more charges that could’ve gone forward on all of those officers. Or at least the three shooters.”
They said Cameron lied about their take on the case. Here is how the state AG phrased his decision-making:
While there are six possible homicide charges under Kentucky law, these charges are not applicable to the facts before us because our investigation showed, and the grand jury agreed, that Mattingly and Cosgrove were justified in the return of deadly fire after having been fired upon by Kenneth Walker. Let me state that again: According to Kentucky law, the use of force by Mattingly and Cosgrove was justified to protect themselves. This justification bars us from pursuing criminal charges in Miss Breonna Taylor’s death.
“I really felt that this was all Cameron,” Juror 2 said. “This was up to him. We didn’t get the choice in that at all. So I was livid. By the time I heard what he was saying, everything that came out of his mouth, I was saying ‘liar.’ Because we didn’t agree to anything. We never met Cameron.”

Is this the DA's 1st case? Jeez oh FLIP 😳 it's painful to watch!
This is extremely painful to watch. Not sure who’s more inept; the prosecutor, judge, or defense. WTF
I have watched a lot of trials … this is painful to watch lol I find myself trying to talk to the lawyer and help her out. Wowza
None of the prosecutor's photo exhibits are marked. And she didn't refer to any of them by number during her direct exam of the witness. If this case gets appealed, the record won't contemporaneously reflect which photos were being shown during the testimony. WITAF is wrong with this prosecutor? Why did the judge allow this? Why didn't the defense object? 🤦♂ I've never seen a courtroom operate with this level of ineptitude.
This case is done with this guy! Ridiculous. He knew what was going on!
Prosecution is a mess. Why is this trial going on?
because everybody is woke these days
Politically correct trial to avoid a riot, that rules the day now!
because the cops need to be held responsible for their actions...can't just go shooting guns into innocent people's homes.
@@Shaner373 As radical as wokeness has become, it doesn't explain/excuse violating one of the indispensable rules of gun safety: know your target and what's beyond. Of course, that implies actually caring about what/who you're shooting at.

Geez Cody’s suing everyone - I’d better check & see if he’s suing me.
He should sue everyone involved, his family was at risk & could have been shot. As recovering addicts an event like this could have adverse effects on their will to resist slipping.
Definitely not as strong of a defense I thought would be happening in this case
Did this prosecutor start her position today?? She sounds like she’s still in college. It seems like she has zero experience. Witness and prosecutor keep saying “they” whose “they”????? And then she stays quiet like she expects him to ask his own questions and answer them too
She's far less competent than a college student. I know: I'm a former adjunct professor of communication studies and English composition. She's just like my former D-students.
@Stock Starters I can't believe you said this JUST as I finished making essentially the same comment under another video of this trial. It must be strategic. It's hard to believe anyone on this planet can be this buffoonish at a job they've presumably been doing for decades, unless that itself is the problem. Shocking.
The amount of cops being put through the court system in the past 2 years has been a long time coming. Hope they are enjoying it as much as the amount of victims they have put in that exact same position.
No the criminals are put right back on the streets because bail is biased according to CA and NY , look how good that works 👍
may all your first responder be from g floyd's finishing school...

12 million…. rightfully so
“I seen”, “I seen”, “I seen”.
Are there no English teachers any longer? It should be ‘I HAVE seen’, or ‘I saw.’ I will not get into the “Me and…” stuff I constantly hear.
Lol I hear the same thing all the time and it’s like nails on a chalkboard. There is no such thing as proper English anymore.
My oh my!! Prosecution is prepared?. Don’t think so. Wow!
Dear God, not only did they kill a innocent woman, there was no precautions taken to ensure safety of other residents in the building while executing a “no knock” order on the wrong person.
_MIDNIGHT_ warrants seems flagrantly reckless. As for precautions, they're always taken…for cops.
KKKenfucky Cops shoot whoever they want.
@@joeblow5087 Let's hope none of them is on the jury.
It's "negligence " not "reckless " this is political
@@marcie3032 You're working way too hard to twist my words and miss my point. If you have your own points to make, then make them. Don't try to _re-imagine_ my words to suit your bias or agenda. In short, stop arguing against a straw man, which is a logical fallacy, which is inherently unintellectual. I wasn't making a legal point. I was saying that any reasonable person can see that midnight warrants are objectively reckless-it's the dead of night; it's dark; it's hard to see people, things, animals, weapons, etc.; people (including neighbors) are asleep; they're startled awake and naturally conclude a home invasion is in progress, so they react accordingly in self-defense, perhaps violently; and so on. Is there something you don't understand about this?
12 million? Geez
You have to wonder - if the lawyers had to pay for their time in court whether they would be more organsied and proficient with use of showing exhibits! So much time wasted!
I have to watch much of this case on play back speed of x1.5. A single question or answer can be sooo drawn out it’s painful!! Prosecution is completely inept! I may have to move on to another case…😳
This woman is awful!
WOW , prosecutors start trials with the strongest witness, and end with a strong witness, if this is the best they got , they are in trouble.
Q. Was your memory affected by any substances that evening?
Q.was Brianna your dealer?
hmm. the watermark looks weird on this stream.
If this prosecutor got the job then anyone can get the job. And the Judge looks the same cause it looks like she’s on her 📱
Maybe with his 12 million & 1 dollars Cody can afford to get his tattoos removed instead of covering them.
Wow
that haircut is the worse
Cody is a terrible liar.
Lol I think he's got m3th memory issues

I stand with Brett, I've known him since we were both young he is one of the good ones
