      I don't believe it. The whole point about actors is THEY ACT. If you start effing about in order to get a so-called 'real' reaction, a) the actor isn't acting, so who knows what will happen? and b) actors are going to get very wary around particular directors.

      @@BenjWarrant
      They don't know what will happen is the whole point. Some actors react fantastically, like DiCaprio cutting his hand in Django and just carrying on and including it in the scene or Mortensen breaking his toes kicking that helmet in Two Towers and using it. They dropped Rickman without warning, it got a very real look of shock from him that made the final cut. It could have been ruined by him yelling 'WHAT THE FUCK?!' but it didn't.
      In How I Met Your Mother, Jason Siegel was told his character would receive news but not what it was. The result is that when that character, Marshall, is told 'Your father had a heart attack... He didn't make it', he takes a moment to process what he's hearing and so his reaction is disbelief and comes over as a perfect and genuine response.

I called my son (6yrs old) from the hotel to say goodnight, and told him I was working with Professor Snape, his response was a shocked 'Ohhhhhhh'. I related my son's reaction to Alan the next day and it amused him. When we got back in town to finish off in the studio, Alan invited my son to set and gave him an autographed Snape still, he had his agent send one. Totally above and beyond and he gave my son a memory he will remember forever. Rest in peace Mr. Rickman.

      “pretty enjoyable” - Obviously a film’s greatness is subjective and I wouldn’t ever criticize someone’s opinion. But this is my favorite movie - and I’m kind of a snob! But I saw it as a little kid in 1988 and you saw it in 2017 (at whatever age you are) and I wonder if having seen it so many years after it came out diminished the impact of the film. Here’s why:
      In ‘88 it was quite a different type of action movie but has since become a common format. John McClane was not a roided out muscle freak super special forces unkillable fearless beast (Arnold/Stallone/Van Damme etc) he was just a regular guy - a cop - who didn’t want to be in the situation he was in, made mistakes, was scared the whole time, and his dying was totally feasible. But since then the “die hard” formula (one man in an enclosed space thwarting a bad guy or group of bad guys) has been used so many times that it is basically a trope. I wonder if that’s why people who saw it way back when love it so much? Just spitballing. Food for thought.

      @johnbull1568 Před 5 lety +2

      @@miket9563 I'll add that McClane doing stuff like making notes of the terrorists names and numbers wasn't in movies before that. I still think it's one of the best action movies ever made, but as you say, it looks less original as time passes because so much was copied from it. There are countless smooth, educated villains/terrorists in movies these days, but Rickman was very much a standout at the time. I'm reminded of The Day of the Jackal, another great movie but with a much more slower pace. The ultra-efficient assassin has been done to death since, but DOTJ is still the blueprint for that genre.

    according to a trivial fact on filming his death scene, director john mc Tiernan said that he would drop him on the count of 3 but instead ended up dropping him on 2 to get that real surprised look on alans face when about to fall from a great height but actually fell 20 feet on to a green airbag below!

      Watch the video again from the beginning. He literally just said he does not remember anyone counting. In 2015, Alan said he was trained to let go of the harness himself the minute he points the gun at the camera 🤦‍♀️
