*There is an original soundtrack named "Zhaitan". However, during the story instances in "Victory or Death", "Descent" and "The Only One" which player faces Zhaitan or his echoes, "Here Be Dragons" plays instead of "Zhaitan". "Zhaitan" is almost never used. There is a similar case for the soundtrack named "Kralkatorik", which is used in few occasions in the story while "Dragonflight" is used for the major events in "A Star to Guide Us", "War Eternal" and "The Only One" story episodes.
**There is a longer/extended version of "Dragonflight". However, it has unstable volume levels and sound glitches in all versions I could find. It's pretty much the short track repeating twice anyway.
***There are different mixes of "Jormag's World" which are also composed by the same artist. This the version of the song that plays during the final encounter in story instance "The Only One".

Zhaitan is so cool he deserved a better final battle
Remember we view Zhaitan through the lense of today. It was done over 12 years ago for a character that wasn't even exotic. And a few years ago as a total newbie I did spend over an hour if not more on him with the whole sequen e. He has a nice build up of momentum, a battle on a ship in game that is not about ship battles was nice too. There are few mobs. For characters that know nothing about buffs and walk on rares with no clue what rotation is.
A modern Zhaitan battle would be _amazing._ GW2 has improved by staggering leaps and bounds since then. I'll admit, I was kind of disappointed with the aesthetic of base GW2, and zhaitans' clumsy, poorly executed, and cinematically dull fight was a nail on the coffin. But even Heart of Thorns made absolutely massive improvements in all of those areas.
Just look at the difference between the Claw Island cinematic and, say, the final cutscene of Long Live the Lich.
Or better yet in this context, look at the fight against Zhaitan vs the fight against Soo Won.
I wouldn't be upset whatsoever if they went back and redid the zhaitan fight, especially since they put so much work into animating him.
Zhaitan is my fav elder dragon. He really deserves a rework fight in raid atleast.
I find his theme really appropriate and epic, even if he's starting to be old. 😊
Its also sad we can only do the quest once
I love the difference between the first three themes:
Zhaitan's theme feels like a glorious final battle against a mighty beast, Mordremoth's theme feels like a struggle against an overwhelming monster where the tides only ocassionally shift in your favour. And then there's Kralkatorrik's theme which feels like a conclusion to a long story. It still feels like you're going up against a mighty enemy, but the danger of the fight isn't really the main concern anymore. It really feels like you're ending a tragic beast, not fighting them.
Mordremoth's tribal theme always gives me the chills
For me is Kralkatoric theme. I loved season 4, for me is by far the best living world story.
Mordremoth, Primordus and Soo-Won always hit me very hard.
I really love the way that Mordremoth’s theme uses - it sounds like a marimba? - to give the music that wooden sound. Really emphasizes the fact that this is the JUNGLE dragon, you know? Even the MUSIC is made of twisted plant matter.
Idk, the singing voices sound VERY south Slavic.
Playing EoD the last chapter and got to hear all their themes as you aproche the platforms. My god its been 7 years since i kicked zhaitains butt and when the music started I knew excatly who was waiting for me.

Lena's "Mordremoth" is my favorite but all the Elder Dragons' themes are gorgeous!
It's also my favourite, with her "The Cycle Ends" being a very close second. She is just amazing
Yeah its really become my favourite, had the most impact during a certain story segment, is that then Kralky and The Cycle ends for me :D. They did such a good job with Kralk, hope Mordremoth gets set up well also by Season 1's reimplementation :D

right up there with Modremoth's, so different in style but similar in quality
Zhaitan is done the most dirty out of all the elder dragons. The vanilla story builds Him up as this massive threat, and the final fight mostly consists of waiting on an air ship and pressing a single button to fire your cannon. He's so badass in terms of His design, but the fight leaves so much to be desired. I really hope one day the devs go back and give him a better boss fight, one where His theme feels like it fits.
Yea the final fight is really crap but as much as he was a threat before the fight at the point where we actually fight him he is really nothing but a dried up starved husk anymore because we took away hes magic, food and army on story side it actually makes sense how "weak" he is at the end. Still i really wish they would go and re-do the actual fight because it might be one of the worst boss fights that i have done ever.
I hope we get a Zhaitan Strike one day that ppl that beat the story have access to for a ground battle. I want Anet to know I still want that for him.

Kralkatorrik theme is amazing
Interesting how you can hear the difference in the composer. Lena tends to use vocals and softer instrumental sounds, while Maclaine seems to stick purely to harder instrumentals.
And Soule is always pretty ethereal. You know it when you hear it, Skyrim has the same etherealness.
Interesting tidbit is that the Raine compositions dont shy away using crunchy intervals like minor seconds, as well being rythmically a lot busier. It overal gives them a lot more 'tense' feeling, and overal more dynamic sound with tension and release. The Soule, Diemer and LePard parts lean a lot more heavily on 'strong' intervals like forths and fifths, which makes them sound huge and epic, at the cost of some of that tension. Diemer's works here are all samples though, which naturally makes them sound a bit stiff and less dynamic compared to live instrumentation. Interesting that they went for Raine for capstone piece, rather then the safe 'big and epic' sound.
@@christmascactus1882 that’s a really solid analysis! Honestly I think Diemer shines brightest in the few works where he does embrace more dissonance, like “On the Banks of the Elon.” Huge fan of both his and Raine’s work :)
I also remember reading somewhere that the melody of the mordremoth theme was written by Diemer and orchestrated by Raine, but I’m not sure how substantiated that is

In my private opinion the music is just too generic with no clear catch or repeating motiff. It's basically "copyright free epic fantasy music" , rarely are there pieces that have some soul and clear goal, like the dragon ones
@@secretname2670 That may be the case for the base game, but I have to disagree with all of the expansions. Heart of Thorns, for example, works Mordremoth's light motif in all over the place, including an interesting variation in the final battle music where it is reversed and rapidly repeating, signifying his collapse
From the base game I mainly remember the Divinity's Reach's theme (as that was my first hometown) and the different versions of Fear not this night. But from HoT onwards I've really enjoyed the varied and impactful music on different maps and story chapters.
(I missed LWS1 when it was new and when I finally got to play it I was already spoiled by one of my personal top3 songs of the game, the Battle on the Breachmaker)
I love how disorienting and chaotic Jormag's theme sounds! It really fits them perfectly.
okay, but why does Jormag's theme sounds like a snow storm? the notes "feel" soft. like it's perfectly a snow storm. ominous yet soft.. and Soo-Won's is just perfect..

tbh back when HoT released, I was kinda bummed about the Mordremoth story battle, I was expecting a decent fight against a jungle dragon, not some vine guy with dad bod
then eventually I played Dragons Stand, understood what the writers were going for and changed my mind

Gotta say that at its peak during the Heart of Thorns and the end of Living Wold 4, GW2 story writing rivals that of Final Fantasy. Really enjoyed that. Icebrood Saga was a bit letdown and I think it didnt really do justice to either Jormag or Primordus. Havent played End of Dragons yet but I just returned to the game and will probably start it in a week.

Yeah, they don't even have any unique music themes playing during Dragonstorm, it's just so sad....
It makes me sad that I don't find Jormag or Primordus even half as impressive as the others D:
Especially primordus lol that dude got shafted after how much they teased him in gw eye of the North, not to mention he literally wrecked almost the entire underground.

As in gameplay I agree, but as for the music I really like how they essentially have the same structure, but played differently.
It resembles the duality, and yet their contrast in behaviour. (primordus' theme sounds primordial and uncontrollable, Jormag's theme sounds bombastic and authoritarian)
@@drolzak7 I agree with Jormag's one but I feel like the Primordus one got cut short felt like a long build up which ends with nothing. The theme itself is good for a scene where he first appears but not one I'd enjoy as a battle theme.
It does leave this feeling that something is missing, but then I think about how primordus behaves, and he doesn't have much to him unlike the other dragons who have dialogue and some kind of grand plan.
Primordus is kind of the essence of a big dumb primal beast unleashed, and that's it.
And that's why I find the theme fitting.
I agree in Jormag. I was expecting something more ominous and eerie to reflect her 'persuasion' side but it seems they went for an 'imperial' and 'orderly' theme for Charr Civil War being in the focus of her arc. I liked Primordius tho. It's not as spectacular as others but it has a unique sound among the themes and its 'primal' feeling fits well to Primordius.

Biggest regret for the game, on my part, is that Zaithan sold the elder dragons as these god like entities. It wasn't just a dragon, it was the living reprensentation of decay both in how it's army worked and how he looked. The their is Mordremoth that basically got the same undead army as Zaithan (later ustified in lore) which is already not that original but the dragon is the jungle itself and you cannot even possibly see their body so you fight their mind. But then, Krakatorik, Jormag and Primordius are just basic mad crystal, ice and fire dragons, with mind control abilities.
At least Soo Won had the merit to be a traditionnal asian dragon but it is still so basic, it made me sad.
But at least most of their themes are good.
Agreed, I miss the more eldritch designs of the elder dragons that Zhaitan and Mordremoth sold us on. Kralkatorrik brought some of that back in the actual fight to kill him, but the rest...
I feel like this may be a niche opinion but I love Primordus' theme. The chaotic jouhikko sounds SO badass!
It's awesome, just needed a proper fight to back it up. Definitely better than Zhaitan's and Kralk's imo, it actually sells that primordial vibe.
Zhaitan’s finally battle was fun. But looking back, it really should’ve been better. The music describes an epic battle. We got an air ship battle but not an intense ground war

loool of COURSE Jeremy Soule made music for a dragon fight in this game. For those who may not know, he composed the music for Skyrim, which was also about fighting dragons.
He didn't just made that, he was the main composer for the complete base game. Somewhere along the road there was an argument between him and Arenanet though and they splitted ways.
In my opinion though it's the best that could have happend to the musical scores of this game.
As good as Soule is, his music is so "generic fantasy" in a certain way, like you could interchange the soundtracks from Skyrim and Guild Wars 2 most of the time and nobody would ever notice it.
Diemer, Rain and Chapelle, who composed the majority of tracks afterwards though....they feel and sound very fresh, unique and perfectly fitting to the game, in my opinion.

Primordus's theme just hurts. Every other dragon has such a distinct and uniquely awesome song dedicated to them, but Primordus's feels so generic in comparison. Jormag and Primordus both suffered with story in The Icebrood Saga, but I think Primordus suffered more than any other dragon in this game. His treatment was just really sad in the end.
Yup, I can think of a really memorable quote from any other Elder Dragon, just not from him. Okay, that he doesn't speak himself doesn't help either, but also none from other characters regarding him.
I don't really see that musically whatsoever. If anything zhaitan's theme falls more into the generic epic fantasy music category. Which isn't a bad thing, it's good, I just think it fits that description more.
It's certainly different, but it's far from generic. I also kind of like the more chaotic use of the instruments and dissonant chords. It's aggressive and chaotic, like you'd expect from something so heavily themed around fire. It's interesting.
I haven't gotten around to doing the story for primordus yet, so I can't speak to that, though.
I think my favorite it is Soo Woo's song, then Mordremoth and Zaithan!

hell no season 4 was also good, after layoofs it all went to shit, I quit during champions, couldn't handle that awful story and how they treated my boy primordus, I just came back and beat the newest expac, its way better then PoF, though the primordus thing still hurts.

PvP/WvW cheating GW2 sucks...even the music! Final Fantasy 14 online is better and if you know Final Fantasy, the music is so heart felt. You might just be brought to tears.
Full-time FFXIV player here ever since I switched from WoW and I couldn't disagree more. While I agree XIV is a great game, the music is absolutely dreadful and is applied in the worst possible way. It has a few bangers, but female vocals are WAY overused. Some of the music is really amazing (The last 3 Alliance raids for example), but there are dungeons and raids that have the most calming BGM there could be. No thrill, no adrenaline, no "boss fight" feeling. WoW, GW2, and a lot of other games have their music on point. XIV doesn't.
